>harpsichord starts playing showtune music from 1920s
>completely ill-fitting guitar chimes in
>Ray Davies says “WE LIVE IN A SOCIETY” in a goofy accent
>5 minutes of radio adverts about Australia play in the background

Do people unironically think this garbage is up there with Tommy?
>>
i'd take Arthur over Tommy

I have a love-hate relationship with Arthur. Most of the songs are peak Kinks in terms of songwriting, musicianship, and production. But then about a 1/4 of the songs are total crap and early preview of how Ray's songwriting skills would go down the drain in the 70s. Plus, the album is too long and the concept of Arthur is disjointed and not really effective, probably a symptom of the television film getting cancelled.

A lot of the outtakes and bonus tracks are great and fit on Arthur really well. My track listing is
1. Victoria
2. Plastic Man
3. Some Mother's Son
4. Driving
5. Lincoln County
6. Mr Shoemaker's Daughter
7 Shangri-la
8. This Man He Weeps Tonight
9. She's Bought A Hat Like Princess Marina
10. Young and Innocent Days
11. Nothing to Say
12. Arthur

>"I WANNA FIDDLE ABOUT YOUR KIDS FOR RESEARCH"
>Repeats a previous song from the album (which was also taken from the last album) for 10 fucking minutes to fill the rest of the side
>"IM PINBALL JESUS TOUCH ME FEEL ME"
>jaunty banjo plays to prep tommy for rape

Get filtered. Tommy is among the worst boomer slop in existence. Theatrical, tepid, turgid dross. But please keep in mind that even when the Who were still an acceptable band, they were nowhere near the Kinks.

Nah Tommy sounds nice and unpretentious for a big rock opera. Its mostly acoustic
>>
>>129043261
Yes, but also not on Arthur. Arthur is perfect as it is.
>>
>>129040659
heh heh it do be like that

Bad take. Plastic Man, Mr. Shoemaker's Daughter, and This Man He Weeps Tonight do not belong on the album. If you were going to include a Dave song it should have been Mindless Child of Motherhood for thematic purposes but even that doesn't really fit. Dave's output during this period was actually very good and I wish it had been nurtured more, but Arthur is perfect as a song sequence.
>>
The problem with Kinks is that none of their songs sounds like the definitive recording.

I think Plastic Man does a much better job at conveying the uniformity and unquestioning nature of British society at the time than Brainwashed or Yes Sir No Sir.
>>
>>129045628
Plastic Man was a single, they rarely ever put those on the album. You might as well wish that Penny Lane was on Sgt. Pepper's while you're at it.

Agreed.
