Geezer Butler is using an AI singer—and some people are already clutching their pearls.
The Black Sabbath bassist revealed he’s using artificial intelligence to demo vocals for his upcoming solo album, his first in over 20 years. Speaking at Steel City Con in Pennsylvania, Butler said AI solved a problem he’s had for decades: writing songs without a singer on hand.
“I didn’t have a singer when I’m at home,” Butler explained. “Then AI came along.”
Now, instead of awkwardly playing bass riffs and hoping vocalists “get it,” Butler uses an AI voice to fully map out melodies and lyrics before handing the material to real singers. No guesswork. No wasted time.
And before the outrage machine overheats—he made one thing clear: the AI voice is not on the final record. It’s a tool, not the artist.
“It’s so much better now,” Butler said. “You can do everything in your studio, then take it to proper musicians and let them take over. A lot of people think it’s cheating.”
That criticism hasn’t slowed him down. Butler’s approach is brutally practical—use modern tech to sharpen ideas, then let humans do what they do best. Ironically, it’s not far removed from Sabbath’s original process, where songs were born from raw jams and Ozzy Osbourne’s vocal instincts.
And Butler isn’t the only Sabbath legend back in creation mode. Tony Iommi has already confirmed his own solo album is coming in 2026.
