I think the answer is obviously Ayler. Ayler never released anything but free jazz, so he holds a better claim to being more avant-garde than Trane. More avant-garde doesn't mean better, and I listen to Trane way more than Ayler. Ayler used to say "Coltrane was the father, Pharoah Sanders was the son, and I was the Holy Ghost"

picrel is my favorite avant garde jazz album, i havent heard any albert ayler stuff that ive really enjoyed and ive given him a couple of tries so far. give me some of his stuff that i should try and il give it a go

Ayler did release more traditional jazz later in his career and I don't think his free jazz was ever as free as say Interstellar Space.
