Why does /mu/ dislike Cascadian Metal so much?

Cascadian (black) metal was a trend that most metalfags rejected, and that most indiefags dropped when it ran its course. You cannot create a lasting scene off of a base of musical cosmopolitans.

Never heard the term "cascadian metal" before, but I discovered Xoth last year. Cool, shreddy technical/melodic death metal from Seattle.

You can get away with being goofy when you're as virtuosic as this band.

Slow down a song like "Bleed the Future" and listen to the melodies. It's talent, it's well-composed, it's consummately impressive, even if it's not your thing. Not my favorite band by a long shot, but people who play instruments "get it". I guess you don't.

Much of it is pushback against Hipsterdom within Metal.

There's three different kinds of bands dubbed Hipster Metal. There's The Sword-esque frauds who were developed by marketers to tap into the retro trend. Also, the Cascadian style Black Metal bands who seem to have a high incidence of band members who make Hipster fashion choices like Panopticon along with fandom in music press, and popular Metal bands whose fanbase is mostly outside of Metal like Mastodon. All three of these you *could* call Hipster Metal.

The Cascadians have been plugging away at their style long enough that it has been integrated into the USBM world. It may even be the first style of USBM to develop organically in this country, as much as my occult elite Black Metal sensibilities are rubbed the wrong way by this. It's not that I mind the art school college campus senior project vibe you get from a lot of these bands; it's just that they could be a little more conciliatory and mention Satan positively once in a while. Black Metal is supposed to be heretical.

A lot of the bands like Mastodon were always tenuous in their relation to Metal and lived on the border of the Rock scene from the beginning, so they aren't actually doing anything hipsterish, they are just appreciated by Hipsters for whatever reason.

Fraudulent bands like The Sword are the best bet for genuine "Hipster Metal". Hopping on the Metal trend and nostalgia trends, lying about having been there the whole time, using pre-existing relations and marketing connections to get good reviews in organs of the mainstream music press which regularly denigrate Metal as a whole, et al. That's the mix of fashionability, cynical careerism, and phoniness that hits all the elements of the Hipster designation. We should reserve the insult for bands like this.
