whats does /mu/ think of swans?
They were one of the most uncontroversial and widely liked artists on this board until they got to their third comeback album in the mid 2010s when they became too big and unanimously praised so we started hating them.
>>129083534Great 80s and 90s output. The reunion really ruined their reputation in the end.
>>129083693It was the association with Anthony Fantano and the r/indieheads and Death Grips crowds that did them in
>>129083712That's midly true, but it's also a fact that their reunion work was unexplicably overhyped. The Seer is the best of the bunch and is barely in their top 10.
>>129083534the GOAT.haven't listened to anything post Swans Are Dead yet. Although they did play their new stuff when I saw them live in the last tour
>>129083534I honestly love all their stuff, but yeah. The Fantano co-sign gave them a weird rep and honestly outside of this board they have some decently cool fans, the melontards kinda left Swans behind. Celebrity Lifestyle is my personal fav. What does /mu/ think of Gira's other projects?
obviously great, some people here love to pretend it isn't though because it makes them "look cooler"
Wrong, they were shit before the 10s
>>129083534Their trust fund is very impressive
>>129083534I’ve listened to the reunion trilogy and the great annihilator (which was decent) but I mostly felt like I was trying to enjoy it more than I really did. Couldn’t get past the first few tracks of SFTB as well. To me I couldn’t fight off this feeling that it was all kinda lazy grimdark stuff. Anytime you hear a cool groove you’ll learn to hate it after the 1,857,387th repeat of the same bar. I wanted to like them. What am I missing?
>>129083534Someone on 4chan sure posts a lot about them
>>129083534Shitty band with the most boring, least enjoyable "music", sounds like a cross between a blowdryer and a vacuum cleaner. Also, fuck the retards hyping this band on every corner of music discussion, as if popslop and cRap weren't already enough.
>>129083534They get shilled here to almost pathological levels but make no mistake, they are absolutely fucking awful.
I prefer Angels of Light and Michael's acoustic solo albums
The Glowing Man is kino and better than To Be Kind

>>129088987A tranny wrote that, Anon.
>>129089005Chris Ott isn't a woman no matter how hard you wish he was, anon.
>>129083534I like the great annihilator and filth but most of their other albums that I've listened to don't appeal to me as much
trust fund band
>>129091433>"I'm just a little boy">not "I'm a stupid helpless child"one job
My opinion of swans is:Extremely good composition, extremely good mixing, extremely good vocal delivery, but the lyrics are middleschooler-tier pretend-"profound" writing, and gira's lyricism gets worse with every single release. I can mostly excuse it and just let the lyrics be an excuse for there to be any vocals at all, because I DO love gira's voice, but like, come on this writing is so dumb
>>129091645My opinion of this reply is that you're condensing a 40 year career in a few sentences.
>>129083534I can only get into the middle era stuff, no wave and [15 minute repeated chord] Swans never appealed to me. Am I a pleb?
>>129092608Absolutely. Holy Money and Public Castration Is A Good Idea are some of their strongest work, and you'll find that many core ideas of their later (when I say later I mean until 96) albums are echoes of songs and concepts that date very far back - YRP being a reworked song from Cop, Helpless Child as an "evolution" of Greed's Stupid Child, etc. My prescription is to listen to the whole first discography chronologically, including live albums, going to the next album when you feel you understood the one before, and relistening to older ones whenever you feel like it.
>>129091645>middleschooler-tier pretend-"profound" writingCould you cite examples of what you have in mind by this? I could understand the criticism that, especially in Swans' earlier work, Gira sometimes relies on shock value and ugliness-for-its-own-sake (Raping a Slave, Public Castration is a Good Idea. etc.), and that this can seem juvenile in its presentation. However, I don't really see the criticism that the lyrics are fake-profound. I'd even say that Gira's usual stark, imagistic, and elemental lyrical style almost prohibits the sort of pseudo-philosophical musings I associate with the fake-profound. I also think Gira's recent lyricism, such as on the songs The Healers, I Am a Tower, and Birthing, is some of his best.
>>129083534Trash non-music, I've heard their biggest songs, Oxygen, Apostate, Beggar etc... its just slop, unironically worse than Bieber.
>>129083564That's pretty much the gist right there. God-tier group that's only hated by this board because y'all are some little kids.
>>129093114No, its because their music is utter garbage, its unbelievable boring, grating just shit, I'd rather watch paint dry.
>>129083534They're terrible, but due to the constant shilling here a lot of weak-minded anons have invested considerable time in forcing themselves to like them, so unfortunately these idiots will defend them rather than telling Gira and his fellow trust funders to get fucked.
>>129093114Eat shit retard.
>>129091645if u dont care about the lyrics just ignore them
>>129093550Just ignore swans as a whole, terrible music, garbage band.
