After 16 years, I think it's fair to say that the dust has settled. I'm curious to hear what people thought were the best of that decade in those genres.
For me, pic related is still the king.
My tastes for that period are very babby's first indie, so more obscure picks are welcome.
>>
To avoid making the OP too long, this was the rest of my list I came up with off the top of my head:
Who Will Cut Our Hair When We're Gone?
Funeral (fight me)
Fantasy Black Channel
Internal Wrangler
The Dance of the Moon and the Sun
Embryonic
Last Exit
The Golden River

For me, at the time, it was:
Broken Social Scene - Self-titled
Deerhunter - Microcastle
311 - Evolver
Animal Collective - Sung Tongs + Feels
Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest
Radiohead - In Rainbows
NIN - With Teeth

What a shitty taste *crosses myself*

Foooor indie i think Bright Eyes is still goated. Fleet Foxes is probably more timeless than people thought. Honestly King Without a Crown best represents the scene and the decade.
>>
>>129089009
Different anon but at least half of those easily rank in top albums of the era. Would love to see what shite you think is better

Great run, honestly you could state a case for any of the 7 records being their best

The whole presentation of picrel, their Berlin album, all with its seemingly unlimited creativity, control, poise, atmosphere, anxiety, and ecstatic energy, was a massive inspiration for me.
>>
>>129084177
i could just never get into them and their sound.

they were wrong changed my life in high school
i recently found a minty vinyl copy at a used bookstore with a thrift store tier record selection
i know its not particularly rare or valuable but it was one of those unexpected finds that just made my year

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
Pretty Girls Make Graves
the "I wanna fucking tear you apart" band
>>
>>129089757

my bandmate is from the midwest scene and said Conor Oberst has been hanging around bars skeezing on artsy skinny girls for the last 20 years lmao
>>
Giant Drag, somehow wound up seeing this band like 4 times despite living thousands of miles from L.A. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D-lxSGOhQXs&list=RDD-lxSGOhQXs&start_radio=1

is that supposed to be surprising?

Is industrial rock and Ska punk indie/alternative?
>>
psychic ills are realy good and hold up
mirror eye is one of my goat albums
bitchfork gave it a 1.4

>>129094255
only one of those albums is good and it's not even the best thing the White Stripes put out. Audioslave was such a fucking copout, that song Cochise came out and all my friends thought we were getting big ass rage against the machine riffs with Chris Cornell screaming random badass shit over it, then it turned out to be the lamest fucking mom rock shit ever. I don't even know why Cake is on here- what was even the song from that album? Short Skirt Long Jacket? irrelevant. The main cultural touchpoint at this point is the Emo Kid song.
>>
Interpol, Deer Tick, Of Montreal, We Are Scientists, Wolf Parade, off the top of my head.
>>
Not to be too mainstream but I think Arcade Fire would win the best indie of the decade award, Funeral was on another level
>>
>>129094923
So you liked Cochuse but didn't like gasoline, show me how to live, exploder, or Hypnotize?
Ill never understand mu's Audioslave hate, its not like soundgarden never had a slow sad song, and comfort Eagle is just effortlessly good. Did you even listen to the other albums?
>>
>>129084075
i'm with you. I was on the younger side back in those days but I was a huge indie dork lol. It's honestly crazy how little of that stuff has passed the test of time for beyond an occasional nostalgia listen. The top BSS albums (YFIIP, bee hives, feel good lost etc) still hit pretty hard. Wolf parade's apologies is still super good imo, especially the EP versions of all those songs before isaac brock ruined the mix. All the OG modest mouse stuff is still good too. Flaming lips run holds up too. The beginning of the end was when fleet foxes won pitchy's album of the year and then everything started sounding like fleet foxes. Once beach house's bloom happened it was over, we're still not entirely passed the wave of young indie kids wanting to make beach house esque bedroom 'dream pop'. No hate on beach house tho, those albums were tight.

hititng 'drums not dead' on DXM as a teenager is a canon event. I pretty much never feel like putting on liars these days but occasionally it's the only answer.

Honestly I think the biggest thing lost from the spirit of those times was that shit became way less psychedelic. There was always the cutesy side of indie bullshit and I liked a lot of that too, but stuff like the mid career flaming lips, sigur ros's agaetis bryjun, dead cities red seas etc, all had this melencholy psychedelia aspect to it that either got lost with time or got tired.

literally no one cool listened to Arcade Fire in 2007. They might have been on the cool side of normie listening maybe, but I don't know a single person in Athens GA ordering PB&Js and smoking Parliaments that listened to Arcade Fire.
>>
>>129095364
Bravo to the Athens Georgia folks, lord knows their scene worked out so well. Oh wait, I forgot, all their best artists died or went into hiding and nobody talks about anything other than Neutral Milk Hotel these days. At least Win Butler stayed in the discourse, albeit for his sex pest history

>>129095394
I'm just kidding little buddy, my favorite band is Olivia Tremor Control. But that's the 90s. What do you even like from the 00s, Circulatory System? I know you can't possibly like Of Montreal THAT much
>>
>>129095394
>no one talks about Athens bands except NMH
>literally mention Of Montreal itt

wow so you're just fucking stupid. gotcha and moving on.

Who mentioned Of Montreal? For all I know that was you. I can't imagine who would call them the best band of the 00's other than a dipshit low iq monkey like you

I don't think it'd be unreasonable to list oM amongst the best indie bands of the era, pretty epic run from Satanic Panic to Hissing Fauna.
>>
>>129098947
Few people worked as hard as Barnes, changed their formula up as much, nor had as good a run of albums as he did. a true autist.

>>129090221
Broadcast deserves a reply, love all of their albums. If I had to pick a fav maybe it's work/non-work
>>129084075
Some top ones for me would be
BSS - S/T
Built To Spill - Ultimate Alternative Wavers
Sparklehorse - Vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot
All Elephant 6 goes here lol
The Microphones - Don't Wake Me Up / IWHWSITW
Idaho - Hearts of Palm
Mew - Frengers
Clue to Kalo - Come Here When You Sleepwalk

i've got a soft spot for that brief period when 'chillwave' existed and was good. I saw a show in 09 or 10 that was toro, small black, and washed out, on a bunch of dilaudid and that shit was legendary, I'll never forget it. Also will never forget the first time on a blunt ride popping that toro EP on, I had to keep repeating the first track cuz it was so fuckin euphoric. Even tho vaporwave was sort of the spiritual successor to chillwave, all those indie dorks getting copies of cracked DAWs and figuring out what side chain compression was ended up really leading to stuff like starslinger or clams casino, and the whole LA beats thing like teebs or shlohmo. Honestly one of the most exciting periods of new music I'm likely to experience in my lifetime
