Hello again. Choose a record on the shelf and I will show you what it is. (Middle row from left to the middle and the whole bottom row is classical if you don't care about that.) I missed some of you last time.

Those are my remaining EPs. This includes Officer's very nice Life at the Water's Edge, which is maybe their best song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4kHKxyozwLs

These are the well known Erato sleeves. The left is Frank's symphony in D minor, the right is Gounod's Faust, both conducted by Lombard. The former is well liked where I'm from, though not regarded among the best (but it's very nice). Not everyone likes this version of Faust because of Caballé but it is quite beautiful at this tempo.

it sounds interesting.
its not labeled as folk but it sounds folkish to me

They (and Mick Hobbs) are hard to categorize in general - some people lump them into post punk, some art rock, and so on - but you're right there is a strong folk element. They explore lots of different sounds, take this one for example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PBhpjwjTc2A

Some Bartok, mostly Beethoven. Those are of course the much more famous (compared to Erato) Deutsche Grammophon sleeves. Hopefully you can see what they are, but I can show more if you're interested.
Just a reminder that the whole top shelf and the middle shelf from the middle to the right are "assorted" things. Everything on the middle shelf from left to the middle and the bottom shelf are classical (just a quirk of sorting that happened that I'll need to figure out another time).

Okay, here's a fun little challenge for ya:
What is the WORST album you own? It doesn't necessarily have to be a bad one (if there's none you dislike), just the weakest one of the bunch.

That's a very funny question and outs me as a bit of a retard, but I will not hide it. It is undeniably this "record" by Uranium Orchard called Unapproachable Light. As you can see from the photo, it isn't a record but a thick piece of cardboard in the shape of one. It comes with some screen printed poster that I guess they thought was worth it. It stands as an art piece or some nonsense. I think I grabbed it because it was cheap and I liked the long title track (https://coldvomit.bandcamp.com/track/unapproachable-light) at the time, I guess it was around 2016. I suppose I didn't read closely enough that they weren't actually sending music, so they got me, I'm dumb as fuck, they win. I was going to throw it away but I keep it as a reminder to read things before buying them and that modern bands from California are gay.
>>
>>129084641
Maybe you could frame it? That'd be fun. I'm surprised you didn't leave a nasty review after they did that.
Alright let's go with that light blue one at the end of cubby 6, top row.

I think everyone knows this one. The one just to the right of this one, I prefer above anything this band released. But for this one, I personally would rather have it over Closer, specifically for Dreams Never End and The Him.

Weird that they made the spine match the front cover so poorly. Vinyl designers really confuse me sometimes.
Let's try the red/black one, cubby two, row one.

Now it is extremely unlikely this will interest almost anyone on this board. This is not an exciting album. But this also introduces a very nice little collection of great guitarists remaining in my collection, and Al Caiola is definitely one of them. He's a little like Hank Garland in that he straddles what I like the most, a mix of jazz and country. This album has a Dixieland sound at times, save that Al's guitar is a very interesting (and very amplified) addition. Old time dance songs with driving guitar. I like this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vZiGt1XlCXA

Get me some Bjork, anon.

I'm gonna make a thread like this of my own later today.

I do live with a woman who has over the years had me add chick music here and there, but I'm afraid Bjork hasn't shown up. This is the best I can do I'm afraid. I remember this being pretty unusual but haven't looked at it in at least a decade.

There's another interesting one. Got this in 2009 as a gift because we liked the movie in the 2000s, and listened to a ton of Townes Van Zandt, David Allen Coe, and Guy Clark. Listening to Townes in the 2000s is more or less what taught me how to fingerpick (and then Merle Travis and Doc Watson later on). This if you don't know is a classic in so called outlaw country. I always assume everyone's seen it, but if you haven't, enjoy the following:

Nah this kinda interests me. Country is a genre I barely have any vinyl in so it never hurts to check more out.

I said I'd stop but it's too tempting not to do one more.
Last vinyl in cubby 3. The one that kinda looks like a building wall.

I have a bunch of really good country records left but not like I used to. I sold a ton of stuff several times over the decades (a lot of my really rare or weird stuff people here might have liked to see, I sold when they were worth the most - assuming I wasn't listening to them as much anymore).
Anyway, the record you asked for is a classic for me and in general. The title track is of course an all time power pop song, arguably the best power pop song (but for me I prefer The Records' Starry Eyes - I've got that record somewhere in there as well, and some other classics in that genre). It's not my favourite Flamin Groovies record, I like Flamingo more, which is in there too, but there's simply no denying this one and the title track alone makes it worth it.

That makes me very sad.
That album looks very interesting, though. I'll check it out when I can.

>That makes me very sad.
It's the only way to survive this stuff. Owning music is cool but also a burden. It's hard to move, takes up a lot of space, and when there's too much of it, it gets "lost" (you stop listening to it). One must avoid at all costs becoming a "collector". Everything you have, you should use. If you don't use it, let it go. The other part is that this stuff has value, and everything I sold was sold for much more than I paid for it, sometimes significantly more. That Heartworn Highways record, I like it and listen to it - but it's worth a silly amount now, and it would be easy to sell it for a thief's amount. Anyway, I've enjoyed everything I've had at some point.
>>
>>129085531
I guess it makes sense if you really don't like an album to get rid of it. I've had that happen plenty of times with my thrifting. Still, letting go of vinyl can be pretty sad regardless.
>>
I only listen to movie/game soundtracks anon-kun. got some?
>>
>>129085573
I've never really bought stuff I don't like and have given away things I love. There's sort of an ebb and flow with a collection, at least mine. There's the stuff that never goes away because it's bedrock, which is maybe about 60% of my collection, and then there's a moving river of things I find or happen to want but can live without someday if it comes to that. In the end it isn't very hard to find a high quality download if I want to hear it again one day. (If it is hard, I'll keep it the physical copy.)
>>
>>129085612
So if you get rid of things you love, how do you typically determine which ones are the ones you wanna get rid of?

I used to have some game soundtracks on cassette, and my memory is having something related to Katamari Damacy many years ago, but I do still have a bunch of movie soundtracks. I won't even show you my "coolest" one, I'll post picrel instead simply because of how hilariously expensive this is now. I think I bought it for 30 or whatever at the time for my girl who likes it. It's worth absurdly more than that now. (It's okay. The guitar is recorded well.)
>>
>>129085649
Generally speaking a simple equation inputting how much it's now worth and the last time I listened to it. If I'm not giving it attention and it's worth way more, and there are several of these examples, I can say goodbye without much trouble. This issue is sometimes forced if my collection exceeds around 700 (around that now).

Roughly the number that my shelves can accommodate without getting jammed or being forced to buy more (real, not IKEA) shelves - which are also heavy (and expensive) and take up even more space.
>>
>>129085708
do you use discogs for selling, or how do you do it?
I recently got a discogs account to buy a Christmas gift and am considering paring down some stuff especially if it's worth $ now. I've been gathering stuff since right around 1990 and most stuff was super cheap back then.
any advice for getting started? presumably there's a thread for noobs in the forums but there's so many threads there

>(real, not IKEA) shelves
What makes IKEA shelves 'not real'? I'm pretty sure I own those ones and they've worked for me just fine.
>>
>>129085773
Nice one, I'll check out this video shortly. Thanks.
>>129085793
Generally only sell locally. I'd say spend money on good packaging, be honest about condition and take good photos (people who buy used records are the scum of the earth), and aim for a fair price and/or sell bulk at fair prices. If you're fair and honest, you'll do just fine. But don't get taken advantage of either - firm but fair.
>>129085861
The particleboard they use is made is several species of trees, often a half dozen at minimum, sourced from 20 or more different forests. I've used their stuff but it's flimsy, cheap, and has zero resale value. Real stuff is built by craftsmen, sourced from single forests and woods/trees, and can be resold for the same price or higher. IKEA "works" but that isn't a great measurement, at least not for me. (Not sobbing over environmental reasons here, but real things are real and fake things are fake, and it's not hard to see the difference.)
>>
>>129085937
You seem to be talking about resale / value a lot. Shouldn't your top priority be how much you enjoy the album, not how much money they're worth?
>>
>>129085989
>Shouldn't your top priority be how much you enjoy the album, not how much money they're worth?
Mostly it is, which is why I described my collection as a kind of bedrock of stuff I wouldn't give away for almost any price and stuff that moves in and out like a river. Again, these things do have value - you buy them and other people want to buy them. Not everything I buy is to keep forever, and I also don't buy everything I like or love. It's not that I am primarily concerned with value, it's more that value is a part of what this is. If I simply kept everything I bought only because I like it, then I'd have a problem - too much stuff is a real burden (and worse than that).
