Oldfag here. Got on the bus in Brendan Byrne 83. Caught most east coast shows until 90 after my kid. I really wish everyone could experience something like a perfect dead show. It sounds trite when you try to explain so I'll just say I wish you all something like it. It was the best thing.

I have to confess, I've never listened to the Grateful Dead before. (you can crucify me later)
What's the best place to start with their discography? Most of their 'best' stuff seems to be from live performances.

I recommend Dicks Picks for live shows. I enjoy the '69 shows with Pigpen.

I would say skull and roses as a first starting place. if you like that check out europe 72. Cornell 77 is also essential but you do have to deal with Donna's wailings

I put off their studio albums for a long time assuming their live stuff is better (which is mostly true) but Blues for Allah is incredible imo

personally I like Brent's time in the band so I try to check out 80s live albums

Start here with their old stuff, tons of banter, this was before they were The Dead or The Warlocks.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gaqa9dNMLUA

Years,65-73 are pretty good for Pigpen but he took a year or so off for health in 72 before coming back and dying but you really can't go wrong with anything in these years
Years 77-79 are pretty good because they're getting into the groove of electrical and hitting their stride
Years 87-89 are essential Midland years, he was an exception keyboardist with a lot of soul, when he died Jerry kind of gave up it feels like

Years 81-84 and 90-92 kind of suffer depending on the show
>>

I have never understood the appeal of the Grateful Dead. It just sounds like really bad soft rock Willy Nelson covers done by a bunch of hippies that don’t understand rhythm or melodies.
>>
>>129087730
IMO their early stuff is better, before they went on to be CSNY-esque. Though, a lot of those songs are also great.
Later on, their new material tended to be too soft/mellow.

Europe 72 is a hybrid album.

Jam bands is jazz for whites.
Jazz 'musicians' shoot up heroin and spam a bunch of disconnected notes and fart sniffers think its smart.
Jam bands take a load of acid, play the same song for three hours because they forgot where they're at while people who smell like ass think its smart.

Not a huge fan myself, but they have some genuine moments of greatness. A lot of their songs feel like they were group efforts where three different guys had songs they were working on and they mashed them together and then got a good lyricist to tie it together. Some songs I watch out for are:

Scarlet Begonia
Uncle John's Band
Brown Eyed Women
Peggy O
Althea

This one hurts, a lot. The Dead changed my life forever back in 2003 when I was 16. A friend of mine burned me a copy of 5/8/77 and the rest was history. My first show was The Dead at Bonnaroo 2004 and saw Ratdog, Phil & Friends, The Q, Furthur, Wolf Bros countless times throughout the years. I saw Bob play with Phish in Nashville in 2016 I believe and that was super special. Bob means a lot to me, as he does to countless others. His music changed my life forever and has left a serious impression upon my musical journey. Thank you, Bobby. I am eternally grateful for your talents and your spirit. You know our love will not fade away…

Yes. That’s a great album with a ridiculous lineup of players. Bob knew who to jam with, that’s for goddamn sure.

I only saw Furthur once in 2011 but it was great, the viola lee and diamond dupree's blues were amazing. I have no interest in Dead n Co but Joe Russo's Almost Dead is really good.
>>
>>129093135
Furthur and “The Q” were the two best “Post Grateful Dead” spin off bands ever, without question. One of my really good buddies saw 3/4ths of Furthur’s shows throughout its entire inception. Kinda wish I did those tours with him. Furthur was absolutely fucking amazing.

Well there's obviously Phish. Joe Russo's Almost Dead is better than Dead and Company honestly. After Phish umphrey's is still going but unfortunately the third generation of jam bands never really took. Twiddle had a big push but they broke up. My money is on if Trey Anastasio died tomorrow it would probably be Eggy to take up the mantle. They're pushing Billy Strings hard but the problem is almost all of his songs suck ass.

the wild part isn’t whether the CIA “invented” counterculture, it’s how easy counterculture got absorbed. like either the state helped seed it or they just sat back and watched kids self-sedate instead of organizing. both lead to the same outcome. tons of people tuning out of politics, economics, labor, etc and vibing on personal transcendence. psychedelics didn’t spark revolt, they sparked retreat. you don’t need to rig a conspiracy if the culture naturally drifts toward escapism.

imo the bigger question is why every attempt at escape ends up getting turned into a brand. woodstock, coachella, ketamine wellness clinics. the machine doesn’t care if you’re dropping acid or dropping out as long as you’re not building alternative power structures. real threat isn’t tripping, it’s organizing.

Bob Weir was the most talented of the Grateful Dead
>>
>>129097728
Bobby was always just skating by, barely holding on. He got into the band by pure luck and stayed in the band by nature of being Jerry Garcia's best friend. He was never an outright talented guy like David Crosby. He has a pretty good voice and is a decent songwriter but he was always the most replaceable member of the Dead.

That’s awesome to hear, Anon. I’m 38 and my first introduction to the entire scene was Bonnaroo 2004, right in the middle of the jam/ festy explosion. I’m from Nashville, so my drive was only one straight hour to the promise land every summer. Lol. Absolutely kino. Once Phish came back in 09’ though, I was all-in. Loved every second of it. Of course I caught a shit load of Furthur, Ratdog and Phil & Friends shows as well. My love for both bands is deeply ingrained within my DNA. I literally don’t want to imagine life without the both of them.
>>
>>129099879
hell yeah. I'm actually from Plattsburgh. I was too young for Phish's first festival of course but that style of music was indescribably huge and had staying power in that whole region. So many fucking cool bar bands and smaller festival bands that never made it. I've seen moe. like 60 times. I envy you being a little older and from the south, you probably caught some Widespread Panic shows, I've only seen em once. I've since moved to arkansas and I've gotta say the south is so much fucking cooler than the north. Check out the band Mountain Sprout, they're outlaw bluegrass meth hippie what the fuck ever sound. Very fucking cool and I love it. All of their albums and songs are cool and lighthearted

>>
>>129099928
Right on, dude. That’s what’s up. I live in Oregon now, so Tennessee is in my rear view at this point, but growing up going to those early Bonnaroo’s, seeing Panic and STS9 all the fucking time was indescribable. Of course, anytime Phish came down south I was there, no matter what state, between 2009-2018. I’ve seen them on the West Coast now a handful of times and it’s fucking tight.
>>
>>129100039
Yeah I've seen phish, umphs and the disco biscuits a bunch and again countless smaller bands. Seriously check out mountain sprout, their whole discography is really good even the newest album. They're true salt of the earth hillbillie hippies and their songs deal with being the town drunk, selling meth, how we aught to shoot all of the politicians and bankers into the sun and how nobody knows what this place is or where we're going. They're a phenomenal band. LISTEN TO MOUNTAIN SPROUT

Not true, at all. Using /mu/ as a litmus test of whether or not Live Dead is an excellent live recording is a smooth brain, low I.Q. take. This board typically hates The Dead and most heads I know don’t use this shit hole, because, well, it’s a shit hole. Live Dead is generally regarded as a Top 10 live Dead release of all time. sam and his crew were given heaps of benefit of the doubt whenever they were blatantly unfunny, but it finally ran out with the simultaneous triple failure of the newest fishtank sex pest stuff coming to light, extreme peace being devoid of humor while being too self important (them abusing actors they hired unironically and leaving it in the final cut), and finally: the harland williams debacle. that gorilla nest thing pretty much cemented, even to the most dense of fans, that the prior incidents were in fact not preplanned bits.

Close enough. Point being no one cares about Rodney Weir. We need to stop giving stickies to literally who boomers that haven't been relevant since Woodstock.

>Well, rap is not music for one thing. I mean, it isn't music, you know, it's talking. That's what is says: "rap." "Rap" means "talking." It's not music, it's talking in meter, it's got rhyme, and it's got...it has meter, it has rhythm. It's not music. It's...you know, it's okay. I mean, there's nothing wrong with it, I have no problem with it. It just isn't music, you know. And people who get to be great at rap are not great musicians, they're just great at rap, you know. There's no road from rapping into music, you know what I mean? And, music is something you can get better and better and better at. I don't know if you can do that with rap. I don't know if whether it has that kind of space in it or that it leads into infinite possibilities. Music does.

their first three festivals were on active airforce bases. They were very obviously passed the torch after the ol limp dick "CIA Ken Kesey" and "Bohemian Grove Bobby's band was gonna shit the bed. Jerry died and phish corrals 100k people on plattsbugh airforce base (home of the spidergoat genetic experiments and only other place on earth the space shuttle can land). You do the math.

You ever see Lucid? I wanted those boys to make it so bad. These albums cuts are old, they stayed a band until like ~2018 and got a lot more polished

The show they were basing that opinion off ended up being released as Two From The Vault. Jerry also later said after Mickey Shart left that her hadn't previously been able to hear much of what Bob was playing, and that he though it was good
>>
>>129108339
that's because people who listen to the grateful dead and hippie bands in general pirate/share the soundboards you retard
>wow I can't believe phish can sell out MSG 13 consecutive nights and sell an 80,000 person festival as the only band for 4 days
>this song at this one show only has 2000 streams!
also there is a separate paid hippie streaming app called nugs.net for all of the other hippie bands neverminding relisten and the internet archive. I have like 3 months of moe. soundboards

How does it feel to know that rap peaked with the crunk era and has now cratered beyond anyone's expectations probably never to recover? I delivered concrete for a mexican zoomer finisher with a grateful dead shirt who was jealous I got to see Further just a few weeks ago.

It was probably just me lol. I spent 2012-2017 going to a boatload of moe concerts with my buddies. We had a friend who's parents are very rich and lived in yonkers who would let us crash at their mansion all fucked up for any show in the area. When rob announced he had cancer his dad bought us all tickets to the show before their (short) hiatus.
