Oldfag here. Got on the bus in Brendan Byrne 83. Caught most east coast shows until 90 after my kid. I really wish everyone could experience something like a perfect dead show. It sounds trite when you try to explain so I'll just say I wish you all something like it. It was the best thing.

I have to confess, I've never listened to the Grateful Dead before. (you can crucify me later)
What's the best place to start with their discography? Most of their 'best' stuff seems to be from live performances.

I would say skull and roses as a first starting place. if you like that check out europe 72. Cornell 77 is also essential but you do have to deal with Donna's wailings

I put off their studio albums for a long time assuming their live stuff is better (which is mostly true) but Blues for Allah is incredible imo

personally I like Brent's time in the band so I try to check out 80s live albums

Start here with their old stuff, tons of banter, this was before they were The Dead or The Warlocks.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gaqa9dNMLUA

Years,65-73 are pretty good for Pigpen but he took a year or so off for health in 72 before coming back and dying but you really can't go wrong with anything in these years
Years 77-79 are pretty good because they're getting into the groove of electrical and hitting their stride
Years 87-89 are essential Midland years, he was an exception keyboardist with a lot of soul, when he died Jerry kind of gave up it feels like

Years 81-84 and 90-92 kind of suffer depending on the show
>>

I have never understood the appeal of the Grateful Dead. It just sounds like really bad soft rock Willy Nelson covers done by a bunch of hippies that don’t understand rhythm or melodies.
>>
>>129087730
IMO their early stuff is better, before they went on to be CSNY-esque. Though, a lot of those songs are also great.
Later on, their new material tended to be too soft/mellow.

Europe 72 is a hybrid album.

Jam bands is jazz for whites.
Jazz 'musicians' shoot up heroin and spam a bunch of disconnected notes and fart sniffers think its smart.
Jam bands take a load of acid, play the same song for three hours because they forgot where they're at while people who smell like ass think its smart.

Not a huge fan myself, but they have some genuine moments of greatness. A lot of their songs feel like they were group efforts where three different guys had songs they were working on and they mashed them together and then got a good lyricist to tie it together. Some songs I watch out for are:

Scarlet Begonia
Uncle John's Band
Brown Eyed Women
Peggy O
Althea

This one hurts, a lot. The Dead changed my life forever back in 2003 when I was 16. A friend of mine burned me a copy of 5/8/77 and the rest was history. My first show was The Dead at Bonnaroo 2004 and saw Ratdog, Phil & Friends, The Q, Furthur, Wolf Bros countless times throughout the years. I saw Bob play with Phish in Nashville in 2016 I believe and that was super special. Bob means a lot to me, as he does to countless others. His music changed my life forever and has left a serious impression upon my musical journey. Thank you, Bobby. I am eternally grateful for your talents and your spirit. You know our love will not fade away…

The Grateful Dead fucking suck so bad. Growing up, I always heard how psychedelic and transcendental their music was…turns out it’s just shitty wanking country. I thought they would sound like Pink Floyd or something but no, it’s like 30 minutes of “whoooooaaaooo I’m a ramblin’ man” jukebox ass honky tonk ass noodling bullshit
