In fact, genre is often a weak identifier. There isn't an ambient pop genre and scene surrounding it in the same way that a metal genre and scene surrounding it exists. Music may stay in obscurity because it has a niche beyond it's genre. So fans of the overarching genre may exclude it from their canon even if they are aware of it. These are only a few reasons that music may be high quality yet also obscure.
