I would like to clear up a couple of concepts that I see posters here struggling with.

>obscurity doesn't = quality
Wrong. It almost always does.

>you only like thing because it's from Japan
Wrong. Things from Japan are almost always of tremendous quality.

Now that we have cleared that up you hopefully have exerted your mind enough to make the connection implied in the above points. Listen to obscure Japanese music and you will be all the better for it.

Bullshit, obscurity means the music is shit, the only time this isn't the case is if it's obscure to a mainstream audience, not to fans of a genre.

>Wrong. It almost always does.
>almost always
if obscurity doesn't necessarily mean quality, then when something is obscure and quality, how do you know that the latter is caused by the former?

Artists often make great work but fail to distribute or promote it. Artists from say, Japan, may make great work that is never recognized because of the language barrier, difficulty of touring, etc. Especially when we're dealing with lesser known genres there is no guarantee that a great record will become common knowledge across the entire scene. In fact, genre is often a weak identifier. There isn't an ambient pop genre and scene surrounding it in the same way that a metal genre and scene surrounding it exists. Music may stay in obscurity because it has a niche beyond it's genre. So fans of the overarching genre may exclude it from their canon even if they are aware of it. These are only a few reasons that music may be high quality yet also obscure. There are many more.

The chance of something obscure being of great quality is higher than the chance of something well known being high quality and this is self evident. Go listen to the most popular music on earth right now. It's almost all complete garbage. The average person is completely retarded. And the vast majority of people have absolutely no taste. Music which finds an audience almost always does so on the basis of some form of mass appeal even if it's pandering to a relatively small audience. Obscure music is much more likely to be made for the purpose of deep and meaningful artistic expression. The artist is aware that their work is unlikely to find an audience yet they release it anyways.

this is just restating the OP (albeit with more words); all you're doing is still talking about trends at best. I'll ask again: if obscurity doesn't necessarily make an album quality, in cases where an alum is obscure and quality, how do you know the obscurity has anything to do with the quality, and isn't just incidental?

Great music does not have mass appeal. The obscurity is not the cause of the greatness. The greatness is the cause of the obscurity. There are reasons an album could be obscure without being great.

>The obscurity is not the cause of the greatness
so then you actually agree with the statement you disagreed with in the OP,
>obscurity doesn't = quality
also,
>The greatness is the cause of the obscurity
>...an album could be obscure without being great
these are contradictory. you are saying both
>if an album is great, that will result in it being obscure
and
>albums can be obscure but not great
if albums can be obscure but not great, than greatness isn't necessarily the cause of obscurity
