And to think I was gonna do a Barenboim edition. If this is the same Furtwangler anon from the last thread, make sure you try out those three recs I suggested for Beethoven (firstly Barenboim, then Blomstedt/Dresden and Karajan).

>The Chopin Competition confirms the timelessness of the music of the brilliant Polish composer, from the very beginning it is far more than just a music tournament of the highest level. Attracting a growing number of pianistic talents from all over the world (452 entries in 2015, more than 650 in 2025!), it draws the attention of not only the international music community and music lovers, but also those who have little contact with classical music on a daily basis. In Poland it is a kind of national holiday, a headline event; on a global scale it is one of the most important music events. The names of the subsequent winners, like their predecessors, belong to the pantheon of world pianism: Maurizio Pollini, Martha Argerich, Garrick Ohlsson, Krystian Zimerman, Stanislav Bunin, Dang Thai Son, Kevin Kenner, Philippe Giusiano, Yundi Li, Rafal Blechacz, Yulianna Avdeeva, Seong-Jin Cho and the winner of the last Competition - Bruce Liu.

sad

Beethoven really used up most of the good sonata melodies, huh, as well as that of the piano trio and string quartet, which is why no one after him could be as prolific.

What makes Barenboim an authority on Beethoven? Well, he was a pupil of Edwin Fischer, who was a pupil of Martin Krause, who was a pupil of Franz Liszt, who was a pupil of Carl Czerny, who was a pupil of Beethoven himself. He is a direct musical descendant of Beethoven!

Karajan's serene and refined approach lacks drama, the exact quality demanded by Beethoven. It's unidiomatic, not a matter of mere taste, more like recommending Maazel's Mahler 4 to a first listener. Even you like the mushy strings and smooth articulation that much, it's just obviously not the thing to recommend first.

>For decades, there were only three complete collections of Dvorák's symphonies: this one; Rowicki's with the same orchestra; and Kubelik's with the Berlin Philharmonic. Kertész offers the most rustic, gutsy interpretations of all. Famous for his dislike of rehearsals, he allows the London Symphony to make a much rougher sound than his colleagues tolerate, and though not the last word in polish, the results have a spontaneous charm that's pretty hard to resist. More to the point, Dvorák's early symphonies (Nos. 1 to 5) remain sadly neglected, and each one of them is full of gorgeous tunes cloaked in mellifluous orchestration. At budget price, this set now costs less than it did on LP in the 1960s. How can you do better than that? --David Hurwitz

There are plenty of popular conductors that aren't controversial. Even his own obituary mentions Karajan's style being controversial. Basically every celebrity conductor who recorded way more than their approach could accommodate is similarly divisive, like Bernstein or even Haitink. No one dislikes Szell or Munch in the same way, and they're hardly unpopular or offbeat choice but rather widely loved by critics. It's not contrarianism.

>>129095932
>if someone reposts a copypasta, it's often (though not always!) an endorsement of its views
This is not the case, people repost copypastas that get attention, and mostly ones they know that will annoy others. Large posts are especially liked because its impossible not to notice them. You aren't really smart enough to figure this out, and are naive enough to actually think there is any sort of good faith or belief in copypasta spamming. Instead of just telling the copypasta spammer to fuck off, you think it best to ask him a question, to which if you haven't noticed: he hasn't bothered to answer your question - because he never gave a single shit about whatever was written in the copypasta to begin with.

> Sumera: Symphony No. 1

Why first movement goes over from oppressive and depressing to frantic? I dunno, minimalism makes tonal shifts more obvious. Not sure I like it. Now it's very light and slow. I don't trust modern composers to keep it this way. We are still on the first movement. Ok, we managed to end first movement without further tonal whiplashes. God I love celesta. Angelic timbre.

Starting second movement. What is this unholy baroque minimalism combination? All over the place. I like to listen to minimalism sometimes - it can be very effective at showing a particular property of music. Are there any good video recordings? Musicians often move in sync (i.e. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZXJWO2FQ16c) in minimalist pieces, it adds to the experience. What were the last two instruments?

Overall liked it. Will revisit sometimes. I'll need a pause before I listen to his 6th.

>Also included is the 1st part "Veni creator spiritus" from Mahler's 8th Symphony "Symphony of a Thousand". This was performed live back in 1962 at the grand opening of Lincoln Center (then known as Philharmonic Hall). President and Mrs. Kennedy were in attendance, and LB caused a bit of a scandal when he planted a big, Bernstein kiss on Jackie Kennedy backstage after the show.

>To all we know about Leonard Bernstein, add this: Not only did the “West Side Story” composer kiss everyone on the lips, but he used his tongue, too — even on his daughter.
>“It was a kind of litmus test he liked to spring on people,” writes Jamie Bernstein, the most vocal and (one suspects) most French-kissed of the late maestro’s three children. “My dismay was tempered by knowing he did it to so many others. The intrusion of Daddy’s tongue was an occasion less for revulsion and more for weary eye-rolling.”

Ravel was a fag.

>Robert Craft, a conductor and Stravinsky’s longtime assistant, writes in his new book, “Stravinsky: Discoveries and Memories,” that the composer had several homosexual affairs — including one with Maurice Ravel — during the years he composed his three great ballets, “The Firebird” (1910), “Petrushka” (1911) and “The Rite of Spring” (1913).

>In a chapter in “Discoveries,” Craft writes, “Ravel and Stravinsky were, of all artists, the most successful in concealing their sexuality. The two were time-to-time lovers....” He further states that Stravinsky had affairs with composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s eldest son, Andrey, and with the Belgian composer Maurice Delage.

At times like these I think of the Master of Music and Poetry in whose name this general was consecrated. Wagner would not have allowed his discord kittens to grow so unruly. With his integral and organic conception of the artwork he would, while paying the respect due to those composers out of whose genius was formed these pristine instruments of musical understanding, recognize these matters as beneath the dignity of the true artist for whom they are but tools of his unified expression. Come, let us embrace one another as sisters and retreat to the seraglio to repose in profound meditation upon the works of the Master.

Societal decay, females being the dominant population of classical (they kill all innovation wherever they spawn with endless bureaucracy and kitsch), atonality turning the genre into a laughable joke with no self-awareness, and refusal to face the standards of the past ("we can never make another sonata as great as Beethoven's!").

Step one would be to finally admit that prescriptive compositions like the tone rows have no place in music.

I don't mind if someone doesn't like contemporary classical, I mind if they haven't even tried it and act like it doesn't exist while complaining about it. >An ever-growing audience is becoming aware that the pianist and composer Lera Auerbach is a voice to be reckoned with. Championed by musicians such as Gidon Kremer, and recipient of numerous awards, this young Russian musician – now based in the USA – is represented on two BIS discs as a composer, BIS-CD-1242 and the just released 'Ballet for a lonely violinist', BIS-CD-1502. On the first of these can be found the 24 Preludes for violin and piano, which were greeted by one reviewer as a ‘modern masterpiece’ (Chicago Tribune), and earned its composer the following commendation in Gramophone: ‘Auerbach's music is put together with tremendous passion and imagination... the way she welds so many memorable moments into a convincing extended sequence shows a real composer at work’.

>A Renaissance artist for our times, Lera Auerbach is internationally renowned as a composer whose exquisitely crafted, emotional, and boldly imaginative music reaches a global audiences. Her 24 Preludes for Violin and Piano is a cycle of compact but ‘meaningful and complete’ works that follows the key scheme of Chopin’s 24 Préludes, while exploring stark contrasts that range from primordial darkness to naïve innocence. Using a highly original tonal language with clear references to classical traditions, this pioneering work fully represents Auerbach’s ability to put music at the service of a broader expression of human need and fallibility.

>how about we support both
We would prefer neither, although Hamelin is at least acceptable quality, probably because all the esoteric pianst-composers rubbed off on him during his time memorizing and playing them endlessly. This Lera character is of a droney nature who can't seem to help herself pressing the same notes over and over again for the course of an entire piece, for this latest case she does so for both hands instead of just the left. We do not respect this level of compositional skill here.

We would ask that you keep the female hysteria to a minimum here.

Another Russian. Hardly representative of America.

What was that Mozart composition, Licken meine arse or something?
>>

America is and always has been a nation of immigrants.
>>

Anon is not even aware that the Europeans and Americans are still extracting resources from other nations in exchange for printed paper and "democratic values". I mean, do you even know what happened just a couple of days ago? Are you living under a rock or something? It's still colonisation, no matter how the imperialists try to frame it.

Post some. So far all you ever post to us is minimalist slop, kitsch nonsense, or unlistenable atonal garbage that we have had nearly 100 years to figure out is never going to sound good.

Settlers, not immigrants. And Russians don't really have much to do with America honestly. Poles more so.

We did the same thing to South Korea but it's a prosperous country.

Why hasn't the rentry been updated since 2018

You didn't do shit. Your capitalist overlords and their puppet government caused division and war everywhere they went. And South Koreans are on the verge of extinction with no sovereignty. Meanwhile North Koreans have nuclear weapons.
>>
>>129097551
North Korea is a protectorate of China. Different master, same game.

Correct. Amerimutts and their imperialist global financial culture terror is hated here.

It needs no protection, it has full sovereignty, unlike South Korea. Stupid little chud.

lol
North Korea has a 1400% trade deficit with China.

While we are more tolerant of off topic posts than some, we find this discussion to be very boring and not one "outside of time", but rather very much inside of time. We suggest a more philosophical discussion next time, and to leave the modern politics and economic numbers at the lowbrow door of /leftypol/ and /pol/.

You pulled that info out of your ass. Chuds are impressively stupid. It's funny how you pretend America cares about its vassal states. SK would get dumped and squashed if (or rather, when) US empire finally dies out.

You think China cares about their protectorates?

Correct. No on cares about this very poor conversation. We do care about the absolute state of our female moderator, and wonder where she is right now. We do no ask for bans, but this entire chain ought to be deleted, as it is highly uninteresting.

That's unavoidable if the chain is deleted
