Genuine question: is this actually up there with the best that jazz has to offer? If so then I'll not bother with the genre.
>>129095720That album is a 7/10 at best
>I need to be told what to think because I'm too retarded to make up my own mind
Just listen to Miles Davis' studio albums from "'Round About Midnight" onwards.
>>129095752The album is mediocre. I don't really listen to jazz, so if it doesn't get any better than this I really won't bother listening to anything else in the genre.
>>129095784I listened to Kind of Blue once. It was a little more than Kind of Boring.
>>129095720It's a very atypical jazz album in that it relies more on composition than improv. Personally I think it's great, but it's not a very good representation of what jazz is.
>>129095827Listen to In a Silent Way or Bitches Brew and move forwards or backwards
>>129095926>it relies more on composition than improvSo other jazz is even more disjointed than this? Yikes
>OP is not able to enjoy any music that isn't the same three-chord loop over and over
>>129095720Do you seriously listen to music by going through RYM top-score albums?Mingus was kind of an outsider with his music, it sounds different from everything else.Find some Spotify babby's first jazz playlist and come back again :).
>>129095720late 50s to early 60s is the golden age of jazz albums, this one mostly stands out because of its form imho. also its untainted by RVG so the audio quality is great for its time. but if you wanna get into jazz you should listen to lots of albums that focus more on standards, getting a feel for just some of those songs unlocks an entire world of music.
>>129096001Funnily enough part of the reason I dislike this album is that at points good ideas are just repeated multiple times over and then dropped. https://youtu.be/awLkK-9lTBg?si=MNoJ8fXOsyQkuAc9Does this sound like "3 chords repeating over and over again"?
>>129095965other way around actually. most jazz has a very standard structure
>>129095720good. jazz is not for fags like you.
>>129095720I got into jazz recently but Mingus hasn't done much for me, my preferred entry-level artist is Coltrane so far.
>>129095720I'm a huge jazz nerd and I barely care for Mingus. His music is just crossover stuff.
>>129095720Listen to Blue Train by Coltrane instead.
Spbp.
>>129095720This album is meant for people who already understand jazz. Listening to it and getting bored is like a high school drop out reading a book on phd level science and getting confused, it's not meant for you, and probably never will be. Just imagine if some braindamaged rapfaggot listened to the Grande Fugue and had the same uppity attitude.
>>129095790>I don't really listen to jazzhurr durryou don't say
>>129099025Comparing this schlock and Grosse Fuge is laughable. That's not even an inaccessible piece.
>>129099212If you're not going to address any of the substantive points in my post and just put on smug airs like some uppity redditor then good on you, pal. >That's not even an inaccessible piece.Half-truth that misses the real point. Most jazz and classical is not inaccessible to people who understand the "vocabulary" and the unique sets of rhythms/tonalities disproportionately associated with their genres. That's my point. You couldn't figure that out on your own?
>>129099126most classicalfags are entitled, they think they should get everything immediately and when they don't they have a melty that reeks of FOMO and victimhood
>>129099476You didn't make any points. You just said I'm incapable of criticizing it. There's no way to respond to that because you'll just say I can't.
>>129099508>You just said I'm incapable of criticizing itNo I didn't, you illiterate retard. I've seen tons of jazz noobs who had semi-interesting takes on jazz albums they didn't like. You, in particular, just happen to come off like a pipe smoking neckbeard.
no, the best jazz is usually "fusion" which is half funk. Check out Hiromi's Sonic Bloom, Bela Fleck and the Flecktons, Medeski Martin & Wood, and Vulfpeck. All of these unc black artists suck dick and people only pretend to like them.
>>129099536You said it's the equivalent of "PhD level science". Ridiculous. Maybe your nigger doot doors aren't high art?
>>129096097he doesn't want to get into jazz, he wants to have a reason to hate on an entire century of idioms and styles so his superiority complex gets its eats for the day
>>129099552Sounds like you're just insecure about the artistic value of your pet favorite music
>>129099549Oh and casiopea. Those slants are fucking groovyhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0meljdObppk
>>129099551It was an analogy not an equivalence. It was a comparison of degree, not identity. And if you didn't have the reading skills of a high school drop out, you could have figured this out on your own instead of wasting our time with strawmans. Anything else?
>>129099549>Medeski Martin & Woodlifeless, cardboard cutout music, you have dogshit zoomer tourist taste
>>129099569you're supposed to type this without being mad
>>129099584Not a single argument in favor of the artistic merit of this album.
>>129099613You're supposed to listen to good music
>>129099596zoomers have no idea who that band is, they aren't remotely popular or known. "pure" jazz sucks dicks and nobody is impressed you pretend to listen to a bunch of nigger heroin addicts that sound like shit. At least funky music sounds good, which is again, why I would recommend "fusion" jazz.
>>129099596>>129099722Futhermore I would like to recommend The Yellowjackets.
>>129099549Ah yes, teenager jazz
>>129099871>ah yes, stuff no teenager has ever heard of>blatantly samefaggingnobody is impressed you pretend to listen to music that sounds like shit bro. I'm 34 and have three kids. You're younger than me and lie about what you like on the internet.
only good jazz is from the 40s and earlier
>>1290998841. Not the same person2. I listened to this exact sort of fusion in my teens, including stuff like Jonas Hellborg and Niacin, and now I listen to the real thing3. I am 35 and turning 36 this year, so I'm actually in charge of you
>>129095720No. Probably not even top 10 Mingus tbqhwy
>>129100702whats your top 10?
>>129095720not a big loss for jazz
>>129095720No, but it's close.
>>129095827Notice how you didn't do what I said.
>>129095720As with any genre its a matter of subjective personal taste, but I'd say not really.
>>129099643I know
>>129099619Not a single argument in favor of your autistic melty rationalization. Stay filtered btwdesubeit
>>129099722>goalpost shifti never said they're popular retard. lots of dogshit that zoomers like are unpopular, RMY is proof of that
>>129095720I love jazz but I don't care about this album like at all. Check out John Coltrane's and Miles Davis albums to start, that's more likely what jazz sounds like
>>129099549hiromi is the most robotic and soulless wankery dogshit out there, wasnt even remotely surprised to find out shes a prog rock and prog metal fan lmao
>>129099549>best fusion is part funk>only one band listed uses funk
>>129095965>being too retarded to follow through-composed ballet structure means it's "disjointed"have you tried not being a subhuman ape
>>129099549there are people who actually believe this
>>129099549people who only like fusion are prime examles of people who pretend to like stuff. i bet you also like king jizzard
>>129099549>jap-crapyeah I'll pass bro
To understand mid-century Jazz, you have to start with the Blues. All great Jazz has its roots firmly in the Blues.
>>129106734you start with afro american spirituals. then you skip those guys and you just move on to jazz
>>129096108It sound like random passive notes over 26 min. It would sound good with an Austen movie adaptation. Nothing wrong with being openly homosexual.
>>129095720It was for its time but it's since been mogged.
>>129107382if he wants to listen to hard bop then he can't skip the blues
>>129107503>random notesOkay yeah, so you are actually just retarded.
>>129106734>>129107382This is like saying to understand classical you need to listen to millennia old plainchant. Absolutely retarded cope to disqualify the opinion of someone you disagree with
>>129107834Enjoyment =/= understanding, tons of things about jazz go over a tourist's head if they're not in touch with the music beforehand that directly inspired it. If hard bop is jazz plus blus plus soul, then logically someone who enjoys all of those things is going to better understand, and probably better appreciate, hard bop compared to someone who only likes jazz. Besides, this advice has been handed out regularly for generations and works pretty well.
>>129108323Yeah I'm sorry this is just cope. You want to narrow the pool of people who could conceivably criticize your music to only enjoyers of the music.
>>129107564you can listen to hard bop and appreciate the blues aspects of hard bop even if you arent into or havent made any big attempts at getting into performative shoelessness
>>129105935no they're pretty awful and I hate that they're trying to worm their way into american psychedelic culture as literal and extremely obvious clueless foreigners
Jazz is a rough one because people are very opinionated cunts about it. That's in my opinion a good but not one of the great "avant" jazz albums, but its reputation has grown significantly in the last decade and a half or so, helped in part by it being reissued by Superior Viaduct and I think another label. I definitely wouldn't introduce anyone to jazz with that one.
Normalshits really hate the idea of having to put in effort/time to appreciate a great work of music instead of just consooming it like a series of tiktok videos, huh.
>>129108379>Not an argumentConcession accepted I suppose
>>129108811no one is more opinionated on jazz than classical nerds and racists. actual jazzfag nerds are a distant 3rd place
Even jazz musicians themselves move away from "pure" jazz once they get more musically ambitious.
>>129108944then people stop listening to them the circle of life
>>129108944Most genres older than 75 years do this
>>129108532there's no "appreciating" the blues. you get it or you don't.
>>129109430WOKE UP THIS MORNIN'>da na na na NAMY WIFE HAD RUN OFF...
>>129095720Why is Mingus wearing a jewish hat on the album cover?
>I want to try some jazz>put on an avant-garde jazz albumsilly OP
>>129095790Well you're in luck because Black Saint is not the best jazz album ever, or the best jazz album of the 60s, or even the best Mingus album.Start with Louis Armstrong and work your way forward, instead of diving headfirst into an era that came half a century later for some reason.
>>129099549Bela Fleck is actually good but I didn't even know he did fusion it probably sucksFusion is like the anime equivalent of jazz, it can be a gateway to better japanese art/better jazz music respectively, but if you never move past it then that's kind of embarrassing.
