There's certainly nothing on the first album that a dedicated young man couldn't master within 6 months of picking up a guitar or drum set. It is really that easy to play a lot of pop rock. I read something to do with "group sounds" which was essentially the Japanese spawn of the british invasion where a guitarist mentioned that 6 months was all it took to go from never picking up a guitar to being proficient enough to play that style of music. In my experience this is true.

Most of the difficulty is actually writing good songs. Also I had a very hard time figuring out tone and what equipment sounded good but if you have a specific sound in mind and the money to buy what you need you can always just copy an artist you like and work from there. Although even then you have to deal with mixing. Fuck it took me years to figure out how to get the most out of mixes. Too many god damn knobs and effects and I had no confidence in my ear.

album covers that act like they're so cool but the music does not match

Wrong. There are plenty of pub bands, people covering songs on Youtube, etc that have been playing for years who still play the likes of Green Day very sloppy. It's not as easy as you think. The likes of Alex Turner, Billie Joe Armstrong, Kurt Cobain, etc are all excellent guitarists so stop putting their skills down.

Yeah. It's a shame they turned into tax-dodging sellouts to the corporate overlords.

Just because some people suck at guitar doesn't mean my hypothetical "determined young man" can't play Green Day and Arctic Monkeys in 6 months.
