she over sings everything. almost unlistenable
>>
>>129126136
People who are impressed with her have never listened to classical music or opera. Or even like metal with clean vocals desu
>>
>>129126136
Normies seem to think that singing loudly or having good range means you're a good singer. Just because you can go high and belt for a long time, doesn't mean you sound good or interesting doing it. She might be the most overrated singer of all time.
>>
>>129126136
Is that why you killed her?

I only know her version of I Will Always Love You. It's better than any opera singer would sing it because there's more variety of vocal technique. She makes good use of the microphone to go from breathy to resonant timbre, and she has superb control over vibrato, going smoothly from no vibrato to deep but still tasteful vibrato, instead of the constant obnoxious warbling of opera singing. It's objectively more expressive.
>>
>>129126647
Well I think it sounds annoying. To each their own I guess.

Whitney [Arista, 1987]
It takes more than unsullied venality and the will to power to reign as the most revolting pop singer in Christendom. It takes active aesthetic miscalculation and, truth be told, more than a little luck. Like falling into the lame dance grooves of Jermaine Jackson and the odious megaschlock of Michael Masser, with Narada Michael Walden limited to "How Will I Know"--which becomes your breakthrough song as well as the only critically forgivable thing on your best-selling debut album in history. So this time Walden gets seven shots, with Masser down to two and Jermaine returned to the bosom of his family, and the results are forgivable--she does have a good voice, you know. C+
>>
>>129126136
No she doesn't. Her imitators do, however.

There are plenty of singers who've been through rough times in their life and never gave it anything but their best onstage, even when they were much older than Whitney ever lived to. You come to believe the woman's premature demise was because she was just mentally checked out and didn't want to do this anymore.
>>
Mariah Carey was also done by 35.
>>
>>129128398
Her and Whitney were never song people, they were not Etta James or Aretha Franklin, they were 100% gimmick performers who were there for no purpose but to flex their shitty vocal acrobatics.
>>
>>129128432
I feel that Whitney and later Beyonce suffered from the same kind of problem that affected the post-civil rights black generation which was that they didn't really have to strive for anything and had a major entitlement complex. That wasn't the case for the older crowd like Etta who came up when segregation still existed and black performers eked out a meager living on the chitlin circuit. They had to work a lot harder to prove themselves, but Beyonce is just a spoiled brat who ultimately has never had anything to say in her music.
>>
>>129128432
>Etta James or Aretha Franklin
Fat broads have the longevity. Look at opera.
>>
>>129126647
Compare to Dolly Parton's original version of "I Will Always Love You." Read the lyrics. Dolly Parton's rendition makes much more sense. Whitney's version is a little too much and the nuanced sentiment in the lyrics get lost.
>>
>>129128432
>>129128398
Mariah and Whitney never used anything resembling proper vocal technique. I said in a thread the other day that preparing for a concert requires warm-ups, drinking herbal tea, etc or you'll sound like a strangled groundhog. They never did any of that. Mariah in particular loved coming out onstage and letting out a high pitched squeal just like that.

Whitney did all that on top of major substance abuse so you figure it didn't take long to demolish her voice. You can look at concert footage from the 80s-90s where her technique is absolutely awful.
>>
>>129128553
My cousin saw her in Wembley Stadium when she was on her first tour in '86, after the debut album came out, and at that time she was a very commanding performer with a lot of stage presence. She didn't stay on top long, but at one point her live chops were nearly untouchable.
>>
>>129126136
I don’t know why I like her. I just do.
>>
Just like Chrisitina Aguilera or Anastasia. Dumb 'strong woman voice' screamers who just tire your ears out hearing them make loud obnoxious noises.
>>
>>129128553
They actually had pretty terrible vocal technique, Mariah especially. It's why they kinda destroyed their vocal cords by their early to mid 30s. Another singer who has horrible technique is Adele, who also destroyed her vocal cords in the early 2010s and was out for 5 years as a result, then when she came back she sounded like a shadow of her former self. I will give it up to them for leaving everything on the stage, but they really should have taken classical singing lessons at some point to preserve their voices.
>>
>>129126300
That's a flawless performance
Peak Mariah
You're an imbecile
If only pop today was like that
Soulful modest, no big butt shaking, decent emotions, no brazen in yo face attitude, people doing something cool in sync without acting like monkeys or using autotune/harmonizer

I want 10 years more of that now and I'll say we have a healthy culture.
>>
>>129128553
That's very likely false.
Mariah's mom was an opera singer. Big xDoubt on this claim that she had no idea of vocal technique or how to prepare for a concert

Not sure what made her lose that crystaline voice she had on the first album, could be touring.
Same thing happened to Cobain, after three years of touring his voice cracked
>>
>>129129043
Please an example of Cobain's voice cracked
>>
>>129128553
This post is very accurate. Cyndi Lauper once wrecked her vocal cords earlier in her career before she was famous and religiously did vocal therapy ever since that happeend to maintain her voice in good condition until she retired recently.
>>
>>129128828
>>129128553
>They actually had pretty terrible vocal technique, Mariah especially.
I remember in an interview where early Mariah was, obviously , bragging about her vocals and said "my mother would say "you can't just get on stage and hit those high notes like that." Her mother was an opera singer. Her mother was right.
>>
>>129130040
The interview btw: starts @ 1:30 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6yv_LHGdrRw&t=90
>>
>>129129043
Touring isn't an issue if you have healthy technique. And Mariah didn't really have that many huge tours, only one that went over 50 shows, most were very spread out and less than 20 shows. Look at someone like Kelly Clarkson, who has very good technique, was doing back to back tours of 60+ shows per year in her prime, and she was going hard every concert. Her voice has not deteriorated in the slightest in her 40s. Celine Dion also had amazing technique, toured extensively when she was younger, and she did 700+ shows in Vegas where she was singing live for over an hour and was doing 5 shows a week, in her 40s. Her voice did not really deteriorate from extensive touring. Mariah had great technique when it came to projecting her voice and maintaining pitch, but she also strained herself when going high and forced herself to sing at a register she was not really supposed to.

>>129130040
Her mother was right, she completely destroyed her vocal cords singing beyond her means with bad technique in just a few years.
>>
Every metal/hard rock ever pretty much wrecked their throat.

The godmother of all vocal belters whose main purpose is to flex their voice, not do songs.
>>
>>129129969
Mariah has had nodules for her entire career. Her technique is fabulous considering she's basically disabled vocally. Whitney's technique was perfect, she was trained by her professional singer mother growing up but sustained heavy vocal injuries from the drug abuse. She had made strides in recovery shortly before her death, which I still believe was a murder.
>>
>>129131259
Rob Halford can still sing.
>>
If most anons in this thread got a real singing education they would know how good of a singer Whitney really is.
>>
>>129126136

She could hit the notes, but was incapable of expressing emotions.

>>
>>129131382

>>129127098
I listened to this and yes she can't emote her way out of a paper bag.
>>
>>129131536
Because she didn't strain her larynx to death to achieve high notes like most "singers"? Her middle and lower range were also very developed. She could sing the ingredients on a paper bag if she wanted.
>>
>>129126556
>>
Whitney was a genius vocal artist. Not a mimic, not a shouter, not a goat like many who try to be her. She is an original kind of talent that happens once. While other great vocalists will come after her time, none will have the soul of Whitney.
>>
>>129131737
In America during that decade she was. Your European opinion is irrelevant.
>>
>>129130158
a friend of mine saw Kelly Clarkson in 2010 I think it was and she had strained her voice recently and apologized to the crowd for that so they just did an acoustic set instead that was easier to sing
>>
>>129130040
>>129130158
>her mother was right
She was, but it's because Mariah has had nodules since childhood. It's a genuine miracle she can sing at all. She has every right to be cocky when most people with healtht voices don't put in nearly as much work as she does.
>>
>>129131818
>She was, but it's because Mariah has had nodules since childhood.
Are you retarded? You think your post negates the fact that Mariah employs poor singing technique because "le nOdULEs since cHiLdHoOd." No one is born with such nodules unless it's some other shit like cancer. Overuse and bad singing technique are the primary causes of such vocal chord nodules, which is precisely what Mariah Carey does. Add lack of proper warm-up and vocal therapy, combined with unhealthy habits, like Mariah's drinking problem, then it definitely will get worse.
>>
OP is undersexed
>>
>>129132098
Mariah had a traumatic childhood and screamed and cried her vocal cords out. She worked with what she had. She's like 60 now and doesn't need to prove herself anymore.
>>
reminder that Mariah's sister is a homeless crackhead and she never once tried to help or gave a shit about her
>>
>>129132187
So what?
>>
>>129132187
Apparently Mariah was horrendously abused by her sister Alison growing up so Mariah considered her her ex-sister. Alison tried to sue Mariah for not giving the whole story, that their mother Patricia used to force Alison to participate in satanic ritual sacrifices. Alison and Patricia both mysteriously died on the same day in 2024 and Mariah seemed almost relieved. Her relationship with Patricia was also strained for many years.

what OP is talking about is how she approached the songs, I think.
you have drummers like Ringo Starr, who famously "serve the song"
and drummers like Keith Moon who make the song all about them

imo Whitney (and Mariah) make their songs all about them and their abilities.
Whereas Celine Dion and Sade, for example, use their considerable abilities to make the song as great as possible.

but what do i know, i just listen

During the last songs he was basically screeching like a drowning cat.

And if you listen to their live shows from 1991 and early 1992 he still had that raspy howl delivery, but by the time they did In Utero, 1993 live shows and unplugged, he had a more whispery way of singing.

That's also why they dropped their tuning by at least one note since 1992. He just couldn't sing the screaming parts show after show for months. They had to adapt.
>>
>>129128707
Anastasia not so much, but Christina Aguilera definitely kill melismatic singing. She was the last straw. She pushed it to such an absurd level with her oversinging, unnecessary riffs and grunts, that she managed kill an entire genre.
>>
>>129140061
Because she was too white and technical and lacked soul. Just like how Ariana killed belted high notes because she overdid it. If they just sang in their natural style instead of spoofing black singing things would be better.
