For comparison I listened to the 1812 Overture (Kunzel/Cincinnati, Telarc, the new version with the choirs).The Mahler is objectively the better work. Much more sophisticated musically. It's better even than the best prog, and I recommend it to prog fans because it has that fantasy adventure feel to it. I don't think it's actually about elves and wizards but it's easy to imagine it is. First movement is good. Nice bass ostinato. 2nd movement is the weakest. It could probably be cut without losing much. 3rd movement is surprisingly great and my favorite. It's a remarkable accomplishment to write such a long slow movement without it getting boring. Lots of interesting harmonies and lots of development. 4th movement I did not like. Basically, it blue-balls you with the hammer. There's constant buildups that make you think it's going to be hammer time, and when it finally is hammer time it's built up so much anticipation that it can't possibly deliver. In fact, I'm not sure I even heard the hammer. It could have been some other percussion and the hammer was actually earlier and I didn't notice. But if I didn't know about the hammer I probably wouldn't have cared so it's not fair to blame the music.In comparison, the 1812 has a catchier hook with its main melody, and the cannon gimmick actually delivers. There's reasonable build-up and then there are some big explosions and it's metal as fuck. I also like the recording much better. The Mahler has annoying microphone placement that makes the stereo image sound unnaturally wide and gives it too much reverb. The Tchaikovsky has a more natural sound with punchier drums that I strongly prefer. I think I'm going to have to listen to the Telarc recording of the Mahler.What other Mahler should I listen to? I don't mind singing so long as it's normal singing and not opera.
