Can you guys help me restructure my mindset on making beats? I know, I know, >darkie musicbut I enjoy it.The problem I have is that I just end up making regular instrumentals that could admittedly function as video game tracks. For anyone that has gone from composition to production, how did you do it? What broke you out of "instrumental track with melodic verses and choruses" instead of actually making some shit with some groove or bounce. The only catch is no sampling. I wanna do all my shit from scratch.

>>129167858Everyone will be forgotten, bro. If you're doing it to get noticed/fame/attention/whatever, you're in the wrong hobby; it needs to be about self-expression for your own sake.

How long would it take me to get good with a DAW?Also, different question but do DAWs have plugins where I can 'play piano' but without owning a keyboard?
do you think professionals use daws or is the whole music software industry maybe a snake oil false flag that knowingly rips off npcs with no ear for music, maybe we should ask kvr
>>129168830>rips off npcs with no ear for musicIts 100% thisliterally just git gud you can git gud with Glarry, Donner, M-Audio, Yamaha tier gear. People don't want to git gud because that requires stopping doing whatever comfortable thing they are doing and practicing.
>>129168699varies wildly with how dedicated you are and how slow or fast you are of a learner. ballpark for becoming somewhat competent is like 5~ years from what i’ve seen, but i see plenty of people go longer and still suck (technically, not necessarily musically, though that happens as well).>>129168830kys
>>129168699>I can 'play piano' but without owning a keyboard? It's not good but:https://recursivearts.com/virtual-piano/https://papiermusique.fr/en/virtual-pianohttps://www.onlinepianist.com/virtual-pianohttps://virtualpiano.net/Just buy a 88 Keys M-Audio hammer if you are serious about getting into music and not a poser. So yes you are going to have to save up. Not many are serious about music in the zoomer generation, so think about it deeply.
>>129168699all(?) daws and vsti plugins have a virtual keyboard where you can "play" notes with your computer keyboard or mouse>How long would it take me to get good with a DAW?making music in a daw is like editing videos. you're fucking around with a timeline and tweaking parameters except there are way more shit. how long it takes depends on how intuitive/retarded the UI and workflow of your daw is but it shouldn't take long. you're just learning a programthe more fucked up shit is learning the individual plugins with their own quirks and designs
>>129168699>How long would it take me to get good with a DAW?Depends what you want to do, but a few weeks/months of constant practice will get you familiar with everything, but might take a year+ to really get to know and understand all the options that will work for your specific needs, when and why to use certain features, vsts, effects, etc.>Also, different question but do DAWs have plugins where I can 'play piano' but without owning a keyboard?Grab the free version of FL Studio, load one of the default piano/keyboard sounds (or downbload the free pianos that come with the Spitfire Labs VST), click notes into the piano roll, simple as that. If you like it, you can get the full version so you're not cucked by the free version limitations. Doesn't have to be FL, either, other DAWs can dot he same thing, but FL has a nice beginner friendly piano roll and interface in my opinion.

>>129174600no i started using fl studio drums because you always say my daw has everything.
I’ve kind of hit a dilemma on mixing. It seems way harder than I thought, like I need to study it as if it was a college major to do it well. But it’s also seemingly much more expensive to outsource than any other part of music making (recording, mastering, etc). But it seems very important to everything so I’m stuck.
>>129171876NO SHILLING IN PROD>>129166870This is why you have to specify EVERY TIME use voca only NO YOUTUBE OR SOUNDCLOUD why is this so impossible for you to do
>>129168699If youre coming in, no experience, never touched an instrument. 4 years minimum, with at least 2-3 hours per day. Once you start getting good, you have to learn how to optimize your time spent at the DAW. This way you can start sketching and finishing ideas quickly. You are going to suck absolute ass for those first 4 years at minimum and maybe even longer than that until you can finally listen to your music subjectively and decide if what youre making is actually any good.
>>129175030Also additional info: I’ve been producing for 7 years, I used to have a friend who mixed my stuff but he quit. Now I’m trying to see my options.

>>129175030yeah i love when retards (not you) finally learn how difficult and time consuming mixing is. i got kicked from a band late last year where i was doing all the mixing/production (as well as a lot of the tracking) and they're scrambling to get anyone who can do it at the same quality without shelling out huge amounts of money. just go to shows and be nice to people. you'll get way more out of someone you know and trusts you than finding them online.
>>129175030Learn EQ and compression and you’re about 75% of the way to putting out a passable mix. A mix that won’t turn any heads, but won’t make people go “this is shit, why am I listening to this song”
>>129175030>>129175144how tf do you go 7 years without learning to mix lmao
>>129175030JUST DO THIS!
or THIS
>>129175849
>>129175509nta but mixing is its own fuckin art the same way mastering and composition are. Mixing is hard because because you're crafting the "sound" by making small but highly consequential decisions on a track by track basis. That shit takes time to learn and its abstract as fuck. There is a shitload of theorizing and engineering you gotta do to get a decent mix and its abstract as fuck. Its why mixing engineers usually tend to stay in that field alone.
>>129172673>Whats on your master?Usually just a multiband compressor that does very little (usually less than 1-2 decibel) just to glue it all together and after that a limiter that I smash shit into, sometimes as hard as 8db on certain peaks, depending on how aggresive I wish the sound to be. Most of my "mastering" is done while mixing induvidual channels and groups, if it sounds like shit on the way into my master buss, it's gonna sound like ass on the way out.>How does one learn to mix and master a track in such a way that it sounds good on basically everything? You dont. Your mix will always sound better on some systems than others. You need some idea of what kind of playback system your target audience listens to music on and prioritize mixes that sound good on those systems rather than others. That's not to say that you ONLY mix with those systems in mind, but if you ever come to a crossroad where you have to make a mixing decision, for example, deep sub bass that will sound massive on a large system or punchy upper mid bass that will come across clearly on smaller bluetooth speakers and laptop speakers, you will have to prioritize one or the other more than trying to have it all. If you try to mix to make it sound good on everything then your mix will sound dull and flatt and nobody will like it other than audiophiles and audiophiles dont listen to music, they listen to speakers. You have to keep stuff like that in mind. For example, I know that most commercially available PA subwoofers in majority of clubs dont go much lower than 35hz and roll off pretty hard after that and most like to highpass them above 25hz to protect the drivers from overexcursion or bottoming out. Keeping that in mind, I rarely put synth bass lower than 40 hz (E1). Sure, some clubs and venues that have some ridiculous sound system with high end subs and 21" that does 25hz but those are few and far between.
>>129175733wtf is this
There i go again not proofreading my posts
>>129175509Have you really never heard someone make music for a while and never come out with a good mix? It's very easy to happen in a daw unlike people on 4tracks
>>129175869> its own fuckin art the same way mastering
>>129175854>>129175733>imagine following a step by step guide on how to mixnever going to make it.
> If you try to mix to make it sound good on everything then your mix will sound dull and flatt this general is a fucking joke
>>129175503this is only true if your ears are trained. people who have mixed for years take for granted how long it takes to even spot what compression is doing. in general, it's true that most of what's needed in mixing can be accomplished with these two tools and good gain staging.
>>129175958>yes because master engineers will master jazz records the same way they master pop records headed for a spotify list
>>129175935completely separate thing and you’re backwards.if you are *producing* electronic music itb and don’t pick up at least the very basics over time that’s indicative of you doing things half-assed, and that’s likely going to bleed into the rest of the craft.okay sure, obviously terminal failures don’t pick that stuff up, but i can’t name a single self-producing artist who started off with shitty mixes who never improved over time (inb4 some lo-fi artist who is doing it with intention and 100% not randomly lucking themselves into it just working)
>>129175869I realized this when I went to well known top engineers in my city for mixing and mastering. Mastering? Around $100. Mixing? I couldn’t find anyone under $500 even for a very minimalist song.
>>129175988>shit nobody said
>>129175733Most of this is pretty common sense, some of it is dogma rightfully declared false and just spread by retards/boomers.>19 - HPF should be used in all tracks with no significant low-frequency content: Falsebased>25 - Reverb time is strongly dependent on song tempoKinda surprised by this one, when in 27 they say "Delay times are typically locked to song tempo", what about delays as reverbs or slapback which they mention as another tip?>26 - Reverb time is strongly dependent to an autocorrelation measureHow is this relevant to mixing? I don't get this one>37 - There is an optimal amount of compression in terms of dB and it depends on sound source featuresI'd like to see the literature on that, seems surprising that there's "optimal" compression settings
>>129176016I'm just strawmaning you the same way you strawman my post. The point being is that you can have your mix sound fine on most systems, but it will always sound better on some systems and worse on other depending on what you prioritize in your mixing and mastering.

>>129178106That other anon might be grumpy because you've posted the musical equivalent of a stick drawing and asked 'how do I draw this better?'When you're very first starting out making little test tunes like what you've posted (just one instrument, improvised chords and melody, no structure, no effects, no mixing etc. etc.), the ONLY thing you can do is keep doing it as much as possible. Listen to lots of music that you like with a critical ear and try to pay attention to the bits you really like and why it works, what sounds are used, chords, rhythm etc. then try to apply it to your tunes (in stages, not all at once). Google things that you can't figure out on your own. Try to write simple tunes that use more layers, something basic like keyboard, bass, drums and maybe a pad, and try to make them mesh properly. Do it often and even if the tunes end up being not the kind of thing you ultimately want to make, you will slowly build up a library of sounds you like and get to know what works and what doesn't (for both sound choice and song structure). Expect to be shite for a good while and have to go through lots of frustrations and troubleshooting, but it's worth it for the first time you make even a small loop and think 'I like this, this is good'.TLDR; You need more practice and time clocked in your DAW. This is just like any other skilled hobby, it takes time to get good and you gotta work hard to get there. Gif unrelated.

>>129179347my first listening exp was >synthbass needs to be more in the front>vocals are a bit overdone and mask the bass due to reverb?>hihats have could need some transient love>downriser thing kills the drop at 1:50 a bit (better noticeable on lower volumes)i think it is a bit too gloomy. the composition is already sad and maybe contrast it a bit with the mix?make it a bit more bright. or open up the brightness throughout. like adding a bit of topend, it feels so .. subdued. the mix sounds good but i think you have created a tone that is not benefitting your track, as it adds too much weight. a bit more LIGHT. if i visualize your song it is just very foggy and dark. like clouds - so it needs this synthbass texture in the highs. but you can not just up them, you will have to craft a pocket. an empty space where they can sit unbothered. never listen to anyone do what you want, take what you need :3
Looks like my album and EP were in consideration for the best electronic album/EP of the year in my countryIt wasnt nominated though and only around 5 of the curators actually listened to it, also not in its entirety. Is this some sign that im actually good at this music thing? Other albums were recorded and mixed in actual studios while i did everything in my bedroom. Wish I got some new listeners out of it, cause its different to be recognized by workers in the music industry and actual fans/ music listeners
>>129179713with no other context that’s like an example fairly competent and very lucky, but no sticking power/artistry or whatever you want to call it.were the others that much better? why didn’t they finish listening to it? who are these “curators” and why care what they think? how did you end up in the running? how populated/relevant is that particular style in your country?too many unknowns
>>129179738i didn't say the others were better, others were mostly some very formulaic, generic overpolished electronic music with currently trendy sound probably made for moneygrabat least mine was actual artistic expression of my state of beingthose curators who were supposed to vote are some music journalists or people who work on local radios. i have no idea how i ended up in the running, no one even informed me i ended up there, i just saw the link to the site in the bandcamp sources. regarding the popularity of genre, you know how electronic music is, its a bit alternative, especially the stuff thats not EDM/ dnb/ technoi have no idea why so few of them listened to my stuff, probably cause they don't know me/ im not their buddy/ they just didn't like my stuff that much. its a pretty niche stuff that i do and i guess it doesn't have much monetizing potential. think early fourtet or something like that

>>129179713>>129179837I'm thinking based. I get you could be a little disappointed but hope you appreciate making it this far, especially with something that seems genuine and personal. Do you get gigs? How's your network?
I was recording vocals and I noticed odd behavior with my gain staging: I would get uncharacteristically extreme peaks. I still got it dialed in but when I went to mix it, the sibilance was off the charts. Normally I'm able to put a de-esser at the end of my chain, this time I tried it at the beginning, and even when cranked it wasn't controlling it. I had to clip gain the worst offenders to a pretty extreme degree. I use an SM57 and I spent extra time on this session obsessing over mic placement so it really rustled my jimmies that I got this extreme issue. I suppose I must have just forgot to be careful with my sibilance while singing, like I was way into the performance, but it still seems really excessive for that to be the only reason. Yes I use a pop filter. Anyone have any similar experiences? Was I just too lost in the sauce, both metaphorically and phonetically?
>>129180574Thanks anonIm pretty secluded socially, i dont even go to gigs at all, so yeah idk about doing my own gig. Have no idea how to get one and i have no experience with making live electronic music, although that part sounds fun and i could learn it eventually, but the autism is an issue.Only musicians i know are back from when i played in bands, so unrelated to electronic music. Wish i knew someone who makes something similar to me
>>129180368i think your snare might benefit from a rimshot in it, a bit more laid back "wooden sounding" a bit more body in your snare. it is a bit too hyped for me. just blend it in until it hits the sweetspot for you. it doenst make it easier to focus, it distracts me with a noisy sound and disables the "i zone into this now" thing. not with the first listening but on the second things are a bit too obvious, does it really need that energy that the snare gives it?things you could try out:>pedal notes>fading in a pad playing the root for some extra layering >shakers hardpanned left right with different takes (same shaker but panned left right 100% with slight offsets and human feel / swing. sounds pretty nice sometimes when it fuses with some other elements)

The easy thing would be to copy the second verse (01:30) but I like the idea of that alarm clock synth being introduced in the middle of the song

>>129195663yes its much easier to make the instrumental part first then think of the lyrics over it, way way way way easier. It can be for noobs even eventually you move on from it as you get more experienced but start there, using the tune of a song itself for the rhythm of the lyrics guiding yourself over it, usually if you song has it I recommend guiding yourself by the wind instruments because the voice is a wind instrument basically, but you can also use guitar or piano, etc this skills are noobish though but it helps get started:https://youtu.be/H0fmvDp6LLQ?si=dQi3TTJpJM84OjyK

I also think you could do better than just using the Amen break.

The bridge at 30s should be something else, but I tweaked around it and wrote a few sections that ultimately weren't great. On the saw synth, I made a different variation to cover the block chords that play throughout. I think the chief complain that you've pointed out is that the arrangement is too busy, but I couldn't rework it without changing the composition a but more than I'd like.https://voca.ro/1dW3Q0Dl8zpH
>>129202173>>129189914Drums are missing, but so is everything else. It's hard to define the melodic elements because it's ll washed in reverb. Stylistic choices aside, I would suggest adding a few main melodic elements that sit atop it all. Drums should hold the main rhythm, which they barely do here, but they don't accent anything; write a melody, work it with the drums, make them present.>>129190315Vibes are nice, but the intro's nothing but pure ambience. I think that overall there's a lack of definition in the song, from the mids being muddled together and melodies being verse-focused in a rambly sort of way. I'd not exactly suggest structuring it like a pop song, but consider a hook at least.>>129194969This is really good overall. It starts with strong ambience but really drops off for me after the rhythm section comes in. The organ lead noodles a bit too much and distracts from the atmosphere, I think. Perhaps tone it down, or work up a more consistent melody and that would patch it up.>>129195403I like the instrumentation overall, but drums too loud, kick too clicky for my tastes. The filtered lead that comes in at 1m brings some interesting rhythm, but too squeaky and doesn't develop into anything. Work on a defining melody throughout the piece and build the song around it. Now the song is just wandering.

I'd work a bit on sound selection, try layering with different tones or automating/modulating synth parameters to add some motion. Add some transitions at the end of bars (rhythmic or melodic). >>129210051Turn everything down, idjit. You're probably clipping above 0db.
https://voca.ro/1nIS6Y1vmF0Nmade this half a year ago, but I think I never posted the full thing here
>>129210508nice breakdown
>>129210487so how do i render it loudly then? the last time someone told me to turn everything down and put like a band or something on it, but that just made it sound absurdly low quality
>>129210487>You're probably clipping above 0dbthat IS the definition of clipping...
>>129210562>a bandBro wut?
>>129210562Probably some noob that didn't know what filter is what
>>129210603it was a long time ago i dont remember the specifics
Distrokid or Amuse?

>>129212440That bass sound, bro. Kill it. The other atmospheric stuff sounds really nice.
>>129212440i don't think the bass is completely dead in the water, but its way too loud in the mix currently. its being used as a focal point but its not interesting enough to be a focal point.atmosphere sounds good, i think you're pretty close to the sound youre going formix is pretty average overall, lot of things getting in each other's way and not much consistency across your gain stagingenjoyable listen regardless
>>129212181They released some crazy xylophone / synth hybrid though, that's cool.
I think one thing holding me back which is also something I think people underestimate with producing is there's just so much info you have to keep in mind. Like a whole track could sound off if you don't sidechain. How do you guys keep everything in mind, like do you have notes?
>>129213753well as you get better it all gets internalised and then you don't have to think about it because you hear ityou hear the lack of sidechain, you hear the need to do X or Y - it just becomes part of your process because if you didn't do it you wouldn't like how it sounds
think im slowly butchering this >>129198665added grand peeno to the first drum section, expanded the elec guitar section and added a secret new chord progression at the endstill need to do the funky basslinehttps://voca.ro/1KZlvFgUjEfd
I know learning Ableton Live is the sensible choice, but I just want to use Milky.

>>129197697Speaking of, I picked up the guitar for the first time in months and did this. Shredded my fingers playing without calluses. I probably won't touch it again for a while, but this was fun.https://voca.ro/1evkKgxKbd7U
>>129168535I added synths 2 it.https://voca.ro/1hxCgpSrMcA4I looove cheesy music is this cheesy enough?
>>129216440Cheesy music is based and this song is kinda based.
>>129216453how do i make it for sure based...
>>129216459a part good melody with keys. a build up into a crecendo then a keys melody "no distortion" regular clean piano sound.Learn from Masashi Hamauzu bitch, that dude also makes electronic music mostly Trance sounding from time to time and fuses it with classical theory ofc at around the 0:30 mark. Yusnaan Battle Theme High Voltage
>>129216459if you cant play piano you are fucked tho, thats your limit
>>129216524Masashi Hamauzu doesnt sound cheesy at all, baka...
>>129215943Nice. Sounds a bit Irish specially the start. Breddy gud considering you haven't fingered A minor in months
>>129216595what... it sounds cheesy in a good way, it does sound anime:https://youtu.be/tfDoBy-Qj4Q?si=kB21KXCr4DWB2elP&t=34but he has an spectacular ability to ascend something that would otherwise be a normie lame Trance song into the beautiful world of melody. Music without melody is not spell casting, it lacks that higher virtuosity, if you really care about music you make melody. If you want to feel God you need to make melody, rhythm alone doesn't reach those ascended more perfect highs.
>>129216637Weeb... I dont wanna be anime cheesy uweh
>>129216678can you even play piano?
>>129216684No, I'm a guitar and bassCHAD. No anime cheesiness 4 me
>>129216692I was going to roast you but at least you play instruments which is way better than rap fags who should kill themselves right now or go to reddit.

>>129218183Can you not read?
>>129218115topkek that was the most i ever laughed in this thread but i feel youhttps://vocaroo.com/1gnPviarGBZF
>>129218189it doesn't sound like you even attempted anything in that direction
>>129218202I'm not responsible for what I do once I get in the zone.
Are project files ever shared here?>>129212440Sounds promising, as mentioned the mix is off. Something is still missing, also maybe try to dress up some of the sounds you already have, like the bell for example>>129215226I like>>129217540I have never listened to the jet set radio but this sounds very reserved, there is probably a lot you can add to it
>>129218331>Are project files ever shared here?no

>>129217540The guy who made both soundtracks used a sample library called. The X-Static Goldmine. If you want to make something that sounds like JSRF I would check that out.
cook a big pot of gumbo because of the freezey storm and make wub wubs while it simmers maybe..??i only have beef broth though hmmm.hybrid reverb colour impulse responses waow
>>129213969needs breaks and synths, just push it a tiny bit into the hardcore vibe
>>129215226hits good.>>129218115I had this problem as a new producer as well. You get so caught up in experimenting that you forget what you're after. Sit back and THINK. Every single step you make should go towards the vibe you're seeking.
>>129218115Another one:https://voca.ro/1byxJNqsZHFIFuck my retard autist life
>>129220335sit there and just make sounds for like 3 hours before composing anything bro
