Just buy a 88 Keys M-Audio hammer if you are serious about getting into music and not a poser. So yes you are going to have to save up. Not many are serious about music in the zoomer generation, so think about it deeply.

Depends what you want to do, but a few weeks/months of constant practice will get you familiar with everything, but might take a year+ to really get to know and understand all the options that will work for your specific needs, when and why to use certain features, vsts, effects, etc.

Grab the free version of FL Studio, load one of the default piano/keyboard sounds (or downbload the free pianos that come with the Spitfire Labs VST), click notes into the piano roll, simple as that. If you like it, you can get the full version so you're not cucked by the free version limitations. Doesn't have to be FL, either, other DAWs can dot he same thing, but FL has a nice beginner friendly piano roll and interface in my opinion.

Mixing is hard because because you're crafting the "sound" by making small but highly consequential decisions on a track by track basis. That shit takes time to learn and its abstract as fuck. There is a shitload of theorizing and engineering you gotta do to get a decent mix and its abstract as fuck. Its why mixing engineers usually tend to stay in that field alone.

Usually just a multiband compressor that does very little (usually less than 1-2 decibel) just to glue it all together and after that a limiter that I smash shit into, sometimes as hard as 8db on certain peaks, depending on how aggresive I wish the sound to be. Most of my "mastering" is done while mixing induvidual channels and groups, if it sounds like shit on the way into my master buss, it's gonna sound like ass on the way out.

You dont. Your mix will always sound better on some systems than others. You need some idea of what kind of playback system your target audience listens to music on and prioritize mixes that sound good on those systems rather than others.

That's not to say that you ONLY mix with those systems in mind, but if you ever come to a crossroad where you have to make a mixing decision, for example, deep sub bass that will sound massive on a large system or punchy upper mid bass that will come across clearly on smaller bluetooth speakers and laptop speakers, you will have to prioritize one or the other more than trying to have it all. If you try to mix to make it sound good on everything then your mix will sound dull and flatt and nobody will like it other than audiophiles and audiophiles dont listen to music, they listen to speakers.

You have to keep stuff like that in mind. For example, I know that most commercially available PA subwoofers in majority of clubs dont go much lower than 35hz and roll off pretty hard after that and most like to highpass them above 25hz to protect the drivers from overexcursion or bottoming out. Keeping that in mind, I rarely put synth bass lower than 40 hz (E1). Sure, some clubs and venues that have some ridiculous sound system with high end subs and 21" that does 25hz but those are few and far between.

When you're very first starting out making little test tunes like what you've posted (just one instrument, improvised chords and melody, no structure, no effects, no mixing etc. etc.), the ONLY thing you can do is keep doing it as much as possible. Listen to lots of music that you like with a critical ear and try to pay attention to the bits you really like and why it works, what sounds are used, chords, rhythm etc. then try to apply it to your tunes (in stages, not all at once). Google things that you can't figure out on your own. Try to write simple tunes that use more layers, something basic like keyboard, bass, drums and maybe a pad, and try to make them mesh properly. Do it often and even if the tunes end up being not the kind of thing you ultimately want to make, you will slowly build up a library of sounds you like and get to know what works and what doesn't (for both sound choice and song structure). Expect to be shite for a good while and have to go through lots of frustrations and troubleshooting, but it's worth it for the first time you make even a small loop and think 'I like this, this is good'.

TLDR; You need more practice and time clocked in your DAW. This is just like any other skilled hobby, it takes time to get good and you gotta work hard to get there. Gif unrelated.

I was recording vocals and I noticed odd behavior with my gain staging: I would get uncharacteristically extreme peaks. I still got it dialed in but when I went to mix it, the sibilance was off the charts. Normally I'm able to put a de-esser at the end of my chain, this time I tried it at the beginning, and even when cranked it wasn't controlling it. I had to clip gain the worst offenders to a pretty extreme degree. I use an SM57 and I spent extra time on this session obsessing over mic placement so it really rustled my jimmies that I got this extreme issue. I suppose I must have just forgot to be careful with my sibilance while singing, like I was way into the performance, but it still seems really excessive for that to be the only reason. Yes I use a pop filter. Anyone have any similar experiences? Was I just too lost in the sauce, both metaphorically and phonetically?

i think your snare might benefit from a rimshot in it, a bit more laid back "wooden sounding" a bit more body in your snare. it is a bit too hyped for me. just blend it in until it hits the sweetspot for you.
it doenst make it easier to focus, it distracts me with a noisy sound and disables the "i zone into this now" thing. not with the first listening but on the second things are a bit too obvious,
does it really need that energy that the snare gives it?

yes its much easier to make the instrumental part first then think of the lyrics over it, way way way way easier. It can be for noobs even eventually you move on from it as you get more experienced but start there, using the tune of a song itself for the rhythm of the lyrics guiding yourself over it, usually if you song has it I recommend guiding yourself by the wind instruments because the voice is a wind instrument basically, but you can also use guitar or piano, etc this skills are noobish though but it helps get started:

i'm not that guy, but don't be too harsh on yourself, it's a pretty neat idea. It's missing some funky bassline. I'd work a bit on sound selection, try layering with different tones or automating/modulating synth parameters to add some motion. Add some transitions at the end of bars (rhythmic or melodic). Introduce some different chords later, maybe use the same progression but with inversions/different voicings, and use a different progression for a bridge/second section. Those are just some ideas I had listening to this

2i4 finally died... 10 years. Well, simply to use plugin MIDI insturments, sounds, and FX I have with a guitar I needed a GK-3. GK-3 has to go to a brain box, so Roland GI-10. GI-10 to Audiobox USB96___/_Mackie Monitors -PC
So... with this I can get the analog insturments in, and the guitar as controller. BUT simple MIDI tracks like shit and no bends or anything and it's miserable so you have to translate the 13 pin to 5 pin.

I'm messing with the mixing a bit. But I always question what makes a good mix vs a bad mix. I watched an old 80s-90s video on mastering audio, and they mention its just down to personal preference on what you think would sound good across multiple mediums (different speakers) while also giving your audio a 3d feel. On my JBL headphones (aux) it sounds good, but on my logitech pro x (aux to usb audio) it sounds like it's missing all of the low end unless I turn up the volume

i don't think the bass is completely dead in the water, but its way too loud in the mix currently. its being used as a focal point but its not interesting enough to be a focal point.
atmosphere sounds good, i think you're pretty close to the sound youre going for
mix is pretty average overall, lot of things getting in each other's way and not much consistency across your gain staging
