RTL is unique because of its dark production and subject matter. There's a lot of reverb, likely both natural and artificial, which became less common on thrash records over time. You'll still hear that kind of sound on a few mid-80s thrash records like Bonded by Blood, Darkness Descends, and Hell Awaits. After MoP, everyone wanted to copy that scooped, chunky sound and you don't hear quite as much reverb. Testament for ex. was clearly trying to follow Puppets for the production of their debut, though their follow-up album reverses course in this respect by sounding like it was made inside a cave.

These vocals are giving Axl Rose a run for his money when it comes to a legendary's voice dying. At least Axl managed to bring his vocals back.
