Phil Collins turns 75 today.
Say something nice about him.

Had the pleasure of meeting him at a charity do once. He was surprisingly down to earth, and VERY funny.

I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent.

I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument.

In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock.

Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and Against All Odds. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist. This is Sussudio, a great, great song, a personal favorite.

Great singer. Great drummer. Always seemed like a cool guy. You'd have to be an absolute faggot not to love Phil Collins

My mom said she was playing the album Face Value at my aunt's house around the time it came out and my aunt started freaking out about how it sounded demonic and it was corrupting the minds of her young children lmao. Like there are bigger fish to fry than the pure evil that is the music of Phil Collins. Gotta love Christians sometimes.

I'm more of a prog guy so I prefer the Peter Gabriel-led era.

When I was very young (like 5 years old) he was easily one of my favorite artists. I really enjoyed Serious Hits - Live and would request my parents play that CD calling it the "carousel" album. My tastes have certainly matured since then but I have always enjoyed his music. He is without question a brilliant songwriter, musician and performer.

South Park is gay as fuck. Those two fags need to die already.

Happy birthday Phil. As a kid I hated him cause he was a weird old man that made lame music my mum liked. But as I got older and listened to 70s Genesis I realised he's a great drummer. I've even come around to all the pop stuff he made both solo and with Genesis.

When you learn about how petty Mark and Trey were it seems even more retarded
>South Park blame Canada song gets nominated as filler for best musical piece oscar
>it's obvious that none of the old farts on the academy will vote for it, so matt and trey take acid and dress like troons to troll the oscars
>acid wears off, for some reason they're stunned Phil Collins, the highly successful pop star writing a song for a disney movie, won
>Phil pulls them aside to tell them they're acting like retards
>OH MY LIBERTARIANISM YOU CAN'T TELL US WE LOOK RETARDED EVEN THOUGH IT WAS OBVIOUS WE WOULDN'T WIN ITS ALL A JOKE MAN WAIT TILL WE MAKE FUN OF YOU IN THE EPISODE ABOUT A RETARDED KID
They can talk shit but they can't take it.

the whole "divorced his wife by fax" thing was because he needed a signature on a legal document and he was in another country, it wasn't a 'fuck you' statement or anything. so stupid how that became a meme.

The tabloids were already trying to convince everyone he was a tory tax exile (he wasn't) so that was just the icing on the cake for them.

Does anyone else notice that Peter Gabriel's solo music seems darker if you assume that Phil Collins raped him? I'm not saying it happened. I'm just asking questions. I'd just say that there is nothing inconsistent with this possibility within his discography. There are no PG songs which make me think "this is not the sort of song that a man raped by Phil Collins would write."

In fact, if you look at his 1980 single "No Self Control," one could easily imagine the song being sung by PG from the perspective of the rapist Collins, while the b-side "Lead a Normal Life" is from the victim's perspective.

And of course, songs like 'Intruder' make perfect sense in this context. It's just so obvious. Digging in the Dirt, Don't Give Up, No Way Out, Shock the Monkey, Slowburn, Kiss That Frog, Games Without Frontiers, I Have the Touch, etc. He's never really gotten over the rape by Phil.

Or consider a song like "Not One of Us." It is equal parts anger towards the rapist Collins mixed with self-doubt caused by the assault. Collins' violent act makes him an animal, ie, not part of humanity. Yet, the victim no longer feels human either, due to his shame.

Consider the following:

Frankly, you could also look at PHIL'S solo work as evidence of a man who knows what he did, but who refuses to take responsibility. 'This Must Be Love'? 'I Don't Care Anymore'? 'Both Sides of the Story'? 'Two Hearts'? 'Don't Lose My Number'? 'One More Night'? 'Do You Remember'? 'Why Can't It Wait 'Til Morning'? 'It Don't Matter to Me'? 'Easy Lover'? (LOL).

Good God, /mu/. We've cracked the case.
