He abandoned the simplistic, biting, punchy lyrics that he excelled at all through the 70's and decided to try to emulate the singer-songwriters who his taste had shifted towards. He was no longer happy being the leader of a progressive rock band. He seriously underrates himself, and that is why he is so adamant about being responsible for Pink Floyd's success. He doesn't see the value in his own contributions as a great lyricist and conceptual director. He wants to claim the work of others because he sees no value in his actual strengths. Anyway, he continued with this new style of writing he adopted with the Final Cut, and he did improve. By the time he made Amused to Death, he had finally mastered this kind of songwriting. That album is his masterpiece outside of his work with Pink Floyd.
