why didn't those bands try to make more sophisticated albums? they were good at spamming 7/10 - 8/10 songs but the songs are often not interesting in production and feel incomplete

lo-fi is pvre sovl and the ingenuity of the song writing is so strong with gbv/cleaners it doesn't matter that there are imperfections with the recording and in many cases the low quality production actually enhances the over all experience. there is something about the warmth of tape hum that is just magical man
