>>129310869This will be interesting. 90 and 91 were very much spillover years from the 80s, but now we're really moving into the 90s when trad and thrash domination ends and we see the rise of other genres like prog, death, black etc.
>>129310869>>129310876the pickings are only going to get worse as the decade goes on
>>129310957Not necessarily. The 90s are definitely overhated, and there's a lot of great stuff if you know where to look. We'll probably see much more power and prog metal than true traditional metal, though.

What I'm really excited to see, is stoner metal creep onto these charts and doom become more common. Besides USPM, those two are my two favorites.

>>129312952>Why do people rate this band so highly? Why are they known as one of the essentials? The debut's good and they have "OG cred". I also think a lot of their praise comes from the fact that they had a very solid comeback in the 2000s. But yeah to me they were always an undisputably B-tier band. They certainly don't deserve to be in the Big 4 like some people love claiming. Their songwriting never really beyond their first album. I mean their sophomore was an absolute fucking slump (compare that to evolution of bands like Metallica and Slayer from 1st to 2nd album, the difference is night and day). Also they kept changing vocalists, and all of them aren't particularly good. I hold similar sentiments with other bands like Overkill and Testament. They're 'classics' but kinda overrated at the same time, some of their work is highly enjoyable in their own right but they can't hold a candle to the greats. Basically everyone takes the piss out of Anthrax and says these bands should replace them in the Big 4, and I may have agreed before, but now I honestly believe that's bullshit. They may not have been as 'heavy' but I feel like they just stuck to their own lane and did their own thing, and as a result their stuff is far more memorable. I recently revisited their early stuff, Spreading the Disease and Among the Living are excellent albums. Yes I'm one of the 4 people who defend Anthrax lol

>>129311055Pretty good epic metal. Definitely blackened, but not by much; and pretty much all of the riffing is rooted in traditional heavy metal. I'll probably give this one a few more listens, because the atmosphere is excellent.
>>129311055I love pub metal so much

I find Screaming for Vengeance a very uneven record. Some songs are great, others are pretty weak. The title track I don't find that appealing, it's just Rob Halford literally screaming and they've done faster songs before (Exciter). Bloodstone is an underrated gem. And the guitar tone on Electric Eye is awesome.
>>129329324To me your link is broken. Must be a region thing.>>129329384I can see Blackmore's hand all over that opening melody, to the point that I was searching Rainbow's catalogue for it. Aside from the melody it also has that driving riff that's kind of USPM-ish, and the melodic vocals.
>>129330152Pain and Pleasure has one of my personal least favorite choruses in any metal song. Devil's Child is sort of annoying, too.
>>129330178>I can see Blackmore's hand all over that opening melody, to the point that I was searching Rainbow's catalogue for it.It's an outlier for sure. Only song from the MK II I can think of that's similar is Bloodsucker; and that's purely for the fantastical lyrics. >Aside from the melody it also has that driving riff that's kind of USPM-ish, and the melodic vocals.I can see it. Crank up the distortion and make the riff faster, and you have something that wouldn't sound out of place in an Omen song.

They're the earliest American metal band and were one of Pentagram's primary influences, and you can really hear it when listening to the slower, sludgier songs on the record. If you ask me it's an essential listen for the early '70s.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OtG5bXF0DZMWhat a great song. Great Dune-inspired song, before any movie about it came out.
70s Rush are cool.
>>129330152Bloodstone is great. Riding on the Wind is one of my favorites. I love that whole album.
>>129330714Have to disagree there, first half of Painkiller is pretty awesome. Hell Patrol, Leather Rebel, Metal Meltdown, All guns blazing are all solid songs. Defenders of the Faith is also solid from start to finish. Screaming though I find really uneven, like it wants to be a commercial album at many points. Painkiller and Defenders say "fuck it" and just want to be metal records.
>>129347985>Defenders of the Faith is also solid from start to finish. Screaming though I find really uneven, like it wants to be a commercial album at many points. Painkiller and Defenders say "fuck it" and just want to be metal records.Very well out, I agree. They tried to walk the edge with commercialism in Screaming and it sounds so formulaic, in a bad way. Besides Screaming for Vengeance which I love, the album I never really took to. But Defenders is pure Priest 80s magnificense.
>>129344180>>129345267their self titled is pretty good too, chicago lives has an awesome solo

>>129348356I thought it was a good album but a downgrade from the first. Woman Tamer's a hell of a song, though. Sounds like a predecessor to stoner rock.
How is the 1992 chart coming along? I want to nominate Shadow Gallery's s/t.
>>129349993>How is the 1992 chart coming along?Slow. I should probably get to listening to some more stuff. >I want to nominate Shadow Gallery's s/t.You got it.
>>129347985For me, it's the title track and A Touch of Evil. Leather Rebel, Metal Meltdown, Night Crawler and Between the Hammer & the Anvil are my other favorites from that album. I just found Hell Patrol and All Guns Blazing underwhelming especially after the title track bludgeons you with its intensity. Painkiller is a great album but it has to be enjoyed in a certain sequence.
>>129348392wouldn't it be >YOUR DADinstead?
can you post the vote totals OP i need something to listen to

Images and Words is good musicianship but let's face it, it's technical wankery with a bit of song underneath.>>129351340Kek, cheeky
>>129311055Good album but not amazing, and the Genesis cover isn't that great. Highlights are the bookending tracks.

>>129360595Yeah... what a shame.
Speaking of Running Wild, I've never seen a band mimic a band's sound so faithfully as Blazon Stone did with Running Wild. Their albums are of the same quality as prime Running Wild.https://youtube.com/watch?v=5QEg1wcbCNkhttps://youtube.com/watch?v=RxHGFOqoaDQ
>>129364424Must be a bit embarrassing for Rolf that this guy does Running Wild better than he has for the last 26 years.
>>129364424>>129364570This guy also has, or had, several other projects mimicking the style of certain bands during their peak, like this album in the style of Somewhere/Imaginations era Blind Guardian.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-wrEkQbOouM
>>129311055Good album but gets into a creative rut by the end (with exception to Pain in the World, great tune).https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PkoFImDpx_Mhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=elLQNOGi4ZAhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DnwfNGQJ6UU

>>129311055Shocked this hasn't been nominated for the chart yet, this was really good doom. Nominating.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pHeVA7Z372A
Hysteria may suck but the title track is great imo
>>129369268It’s like the only good song on that album lol
>>129369268Nah Hysteria is good
>>129367923Honestly, I think Parallel Corners is their best. When picks for 1994 come up, I'll nominate that one.

>>129370394Distilling it all to a top 10 is difficult as each albums resonate with me at different times. Sometimes, I grow colder on certain albums I initially was very fond of. Relationships with music always ebb and flow, so it's folly for me to assume distilling tastes into a digestible reference list will stay true overtime. I could go on, but I prefer Tech Thrash to Tech Death. The latter feels so dull and sterile.
>>129370428>I could go on, but I prefer Tech Thrash to Tech Death. The latter feels so dull and sterile.I have listened to zero tech death. All of the death I've listened to is OSDM and some death doom.
>>129370500This ain't the thread for it, but Death Doom is superior to Tech Death by miles.

>>129376740I fucking love that album>even if some of the vocals sound quirky (I'm no expert but he sounds really out of tune at multiple points)That's John Arch's thing, his vocals are weird but if you can get into them they're really cool

>>129379032That's interesting. I've never really thought about what the first metal album from different countries was. I wonder what the first one from Norway was.
>>129380307>I wonder what the first one from Norway was.Either Straw Dogs' or Rex Begonia's debut EP, they're both from 1982.
>>129311055One of the first Norwegian metal albums. I was expecting something similar to Heavy Load (the closer is pretty reminiscent of their stuff though) or Europe's S/T, but instead this is quite rooted in late '70s-early '80s Judas Priest and Scorpions. Some Thin Lizzy with the vocal melodies here, too. >>129379032>Probably the first Canadian metal album, released in 1978.Bro
It seems we are in a bit of a runt for the 1992 chart
>>129386140This was always going to be an issue. We have more than enough albums nominated, so I say put everything with two votes on the chart and then see how many spots are left.
>>129386164With the 2 votes added there's no slots left.
>>129386222Looks good to me. Can't think of anything essential missing.
>>129383931It's up there for sure. There are way too many excellent album openers for me to have definite favorite. And some album openers are a little too good, as the rest of the album can't live up to it. Ram It Down comes to mind.
>>129386454Same here desu, I'll go finalize it
1992's chart is done! We'll be starting 1993 next thread.
>>129387979Great album. It has such a distinctly "warm" tone that I can't quite put my finger on
>>129386945Wait, how is Cro-Mags /trad/?
>>129388451Crossover thrash
watchtower rules
>>129386164I think 1994 will be the hardest chart to fill. I can only think of a handful of really good albums from that year. From then it will just get easier, at least for me, because of the massive surge in power metal releases.
>>129389119>From then it will just get easier, at least for me, because of the massive surge in power metal releases. For me it'll be stoner and doom metal. In fact, all of the metal I've listened to from 1994-1997 is just those two genres now that I think about it.
>>129389625For me pretty much everything from now on is non-trad.
>>129389670Most of the albums that I've written down for 1993 aren't traditional heavy metal, yeah. It's quite a bit of power, some doom and prog, and a sprinkling of thrash. There's even less heavy than there was for 1992.
>>129389773I should have said "not fit for /trad/".Most of my library from now on is black and death with a bit of thrash.
>>129389836Ah. Yeah that makes sense lol
Just realized we didn't get this on the 91 chart. Bummer.
Some of my favorites from 93. Well, most of them. In case you need a reminder of what came out that year.
>>129390077There were a few of these I forgot to write down, thanks.

>>129391728Of course. It's banging. I prefer it to most of Death's discography.
Am I the only one who thinks Grim Reaper kinda sucks?

>>129395495>>129395266Huh? See you in Hell is an awesome song.
>>129395266It’s hard to say they suck when they were barely around. They’ve got a few good songs, but that’s it.
>>129396411It's extremely simple and kinda annoying imo.
>>129377691Late response but yeah, I did listen to Awaken the Guardian as well. Both albums during the same workout in fact. That album is also fantastic. "Guardian" especially is such an amazing song.
>>129396833Guardian's fantastic but my favorite off of that record is Exodus. That chorus, man. It's so good.
>>129395266I think we all have those classic bands we just can't get into. I have several, like Omen, Cirith Ungol and Wtichfinder General. I respect the hell out of them and wish I enjoyed them, but I just don't.
>>129311055Title track sucks, rest of the album's good; if inconsistent. I really liked Cry of the Nature and Gates to Eden, but outside of that I don't think I'd go back to this one.

>>129404959Haven't listened to Port Royal in a hot minute, but here's what my RW rank would look like1. Under Jolly Roger2. Death or Glory3. Gates to Purgatory4. Port RoyalAnd Branded and Exiled I just don't remember.
>>129404999You don't like Pile of Skulls? Or you haven't listened to it? It's one of my favourites.
>>129405028>Or you haven't listened to it?No, I haven't. I still have to listen to Blazon Stone (which I'm putting on right now) before I get to that one.
>>129311055This is a very good album but it's not up to par with Death or Glory, in part due to the closer which just doesn't stack up to the rest of the record. Title track and Little Big Horn are some of the band's best, though. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lwn1UPU8DpMhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pw2nhNGYsYIhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9w1k3sFwSI0https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iLlIWuzc810

But I might check out Blazon Stone's first album later this week.
>>129405681>Blazon StoneI listened to their first two albums and they were pretty good, I'll probably listen to more by them. I prefer Running Wild though.
>>129405724>I listened to their first two albums and they were pretty good, I'll probably listen to more by them.Noted, I just put on Pile of Skulls and right off the bat I really like the production. Blazon Stone had a bit of a glossy sound to it, but this sounds much more raw and what I'd expect from RW.>I prefer Running Wild though.I wouldn't expect an imitation/homage band to ever overtake the original, but if they can even reach 80% of the way there that's still damn good.
Fallout by Liege Lord is probably my favorite album closer full stop

>>129393303>>129395142It feels more proggy than even 'the sound of perseverance". its kinda interesting listening to this album and realizing TSOP also could have sounded like a power metal album if it had the same singer.
>>129311055Production's crunchier, better riffs, more engaging songwriting - just an all-around improvement over Blazon Stone, and it's bookended (unless you count the unlisted intro as the first song) by two of the best songs in the genre.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WOU0PuBTmOIhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f6LvnrxrTwshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9-NP411X0Vkhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jzDglcSjLBwhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xs0TL9EWrHo

>>129406425Treasure Island is a personal favorite.
>>129406264Most, if not all the music on TSoP is just recycled Control Denied material, altered and released under the Death name because the label wanted one more album. Worst death album imo
>>129406952Same. I thought it was the best off of the album.
>>129386945Extremely based. Thanks for the votes, guys.
