Not doing highlights of the old thread right now, apologiez.
Ah nice you made a new one.Listening to the new Gorrch, their last effort got a lot of hype and I thought the guitarist was pretty interesting, although the drummer and vocals were an absolute metronomic bore. Shall see if they learned anything or not. https://avantgardemusic.bandcamp.com/album/stillamentum
>>129369673Replying to myself, but its much more repetitive than I was expecting, seems like with the chanting vocals they wanted a hypnotic effect. I didn't remember them being like this, so I went back to their hyped EP to check the difference and it was certainly a lot more active in comparison. Its strange reading the reviews about the "low fi" production, I wonder if people even listen to the albums they review anymore, its basically crystal clear. Anyways, if they want that old-school hypnotic effect they should have added a lot more distortion and white noise, thats how the 90's bands got that feeling. Clear production means you relying fully on the music, and long repetitions with minor half step progressions aren't that interesting. I found the album fairly boring due to the repetitions and stale monotonous energy levels. There is at least some fun chord bending like the previous EP though, reminds me of no-wave bands such as early Sonic Youth. Besides that, can't really recommend it at all.
>>129369352How did CoD get on there lol?

>>129369673>although the drummer and vocals were an absolute metronomic boreMany such cases, especially with drums.
>>129372366Nice pseudointellectual attempt at critiquing the purpose of drums in music again. You aren't smart and your desperate attempts to disprove this still just reinforce this fact like "Uhhh why are the drums playing a pattern" lmao you are so unintelligent mate
>>129372392Not sure who you think you're owning mate but I suspect you misfired. I am quite literally a drummer I just find a lot of drums in metal to be monotonous.
>>129372405You're definitely not a good drummer if you think anyone cares about how complex your patterns are mate if you're trying to show off just make drum and bass
>>129372416Didn't say I was good, nor did I say "complex == good", but clearly you just want to spaz out at someone over literally anything they'll bite for, so I'll leave you to it.

>>129372433Well there's an entire containment thread for his mindbroken obsession then, no need to drag it here too.I just like fun drums.
Any fans of Om in the house?
>>129372575I like that album but it didn't blow me away or anything. Quite nice to spin every now and then for a chill moment.
>>129372589It's actually my least favourite of their albums, but I highly enjoy all of their albums so it's only relative ya know. My favourite is probably God is Good, Variations On A Theme, or Conference of the Birds. Fuck man they're all great.
>>129372606I may blast some more sometimes, I've only listened to that one as everyone shilled it for a bit
>>129371957Depending on the context, I don't mind some metronome drumming myself.>>129372502You might enjoy the drums on the Induced album. They're not Cryptopsy expressive, but they interact with the riffs in an interesting way. Hard to describe without drummer knowledge and enough careful listening. It's not forgiving to those who don't already dig brutal death though.>>129372575God Is Good is cool, Variations I tried once and don't remember strongly.
>>129372621>>129372636Variations and Conference (their first two) are heavier than the latter three, just FYI. Blasting Black Sabbath Vol 4 right now BTW. >>129371957Is "Wheels of Confusion/The Straightener" the greatest Sabbath song ever?! >>129372405This lil nigga is so cute.
>>129372636>Depending on the context, I don't mind some metronome drumming myselfSometimes it's just what an album needs, albeit quite rare for me.>It's not forgiving to those who don't already dig brutal death though.Yeah still not been able to dig BDM very much. Tried some more and not really coming to me.
>>129372724I have one Hate Forest album I've listened to a couple times ever. Gonna try them again.Delightfully grim buzz to it.
>>129372757I find pre-"comeback" Hate Forest to be decent but missing something. They drone together and kinda wear out their welcome. For me Hour, with the stronger production and more aggression, really peaks his discog hard. Even the stuff that came after maintains the same drive but usually has odd production choices and also much less memorable songs for me.I went from "Hate Forest seems kinda mid" to Hour being one of the albums I spin regularly.
>>129372766Yeah it's a bit static. Sounds like the band's trying to mix blasting Immortal aggression into Branikald ambience, but it doesn't come out well.
>>129373018For me I think Purity will tell you if you like older HF, then Hour will tell you if you like newer HF. If you like neither then it's not worth diving too much into more.
>>129371957Never bothered with the full discog of Univers Zéro, so checking out an album from past Heresie. So far its a lot more typical prog and a lot less dark than Heresie. https://universzero.bandcamp.com/album/ceux-du-dehors-1981
>>129372366Metal drumming is pretty stale indeed, definitely the case where they are totally obsessed with the snare and providing a metronome for the band. I like Portal's drummer for his tom obsession, in general the hi hat is vastly under utilized in metal, jazz players know that's where a lot of creativity can be found.
>>129371957Trying it out based on the earlier convo.Honestly all this makes me wonder is if my Dad would like it. Proper fussy with his rock/metal but usually anything tagged with "stoner" that isn't too extreme gets fine by him.
>>129373269Nice, brother. What I really like about Om is how there's no guitar. It's all really bass heavy and the entire thing is driven by the low end. I've seen them live and the bass sound is absolutely crushing. BTW if you're interested in other bands that sound similar, there's a band called Bong that's just drums + bass, except Om has vocals and Bong is all instrumental.
For me it's Battlefields. And his dungeon synth album.
>>129373312That is one of the few I haven't listened to so I'll believe you.
>>129373293I don't think Om is for me. I find it good to chill to but it doesn't really engage me.If I want just "bass + drums" I haven't got into any besides Bell Witch, but thats just because they make the bass sound like a wall of guitar anyway.
>>129373766Suit yourself anon. I'm not a fan of Bell Witch except for like one song. https://youtu.be/urqsKacJV4w
>>129373814Definitely more of an I Wait man myself.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LnSt8BVkyMU>beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeneeeeeeeeeeeEEEEEEEAAAATH>THE MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASKThat and the>Breathlessly>Still waiting>Restlessly>Still waitingMakes me think of Dragged Into Sunlight lyrics with the "watching. waiting. visible" they had on one song.
Are there more moments in Jute Gyte's discography like the ending of Democritus Laughing?
>>129375651Sorry there can be no honest discourse about that meme here.
>>129371957Trying some Swarrrm again.
>>129377747I like the sounds (especially the juggling between melody and dissonance, and the vocalist's weird Spongebob meets Tasmanian Devil ranting), but it doesn't quite click like other hardcore or punk does. It's fascinating to listen to though. It feels like music from an alternate history. Most of the components in these songs are expected in hardcore, and even in extreme metal, yet in this grindy screamo context are arranged in ways very foreign to me. I was going to listen to some Bolt Thrower after this, but I feel an urge to blast these albums again and try harder to understand them.
>>129375651The aleatoric notes and super layered composition is an Adam special, good luck finding anything similar. Best bet might be noise rock?....Ehnahre and JG are really the only two who use proper modern classical methods in their metal music.

>>129371957I swear this is nastier than when I first listened to it the other day. How is that possible?
>>129380878Blurring the lines between noise rock and noise music is cool in concept, but this does little for me. Is this your project?
>>129371957One of those bands I got rec'd a 2 track 2023 EP from years ago, enjoyed and then forgot existed and never heard about again.Found they did another in 2022 so checking it out.I have no idea what genre it is and RYM doesn't even have a page for them lel. They don't feel heavy enough to be metal but still good to me.
>>129382558After listening and waking up a bit more I'd probably just shove them under Psych Rock I guess, although thats mostly for the vocals.
>>129379253It's interesting how Ehnahre uses a drum kit differently from what we usually see in metal, but I don't understand how they use serialism.

>>129371957War Master and IVth Crusade are cool, but this still crushes them. The only downside is some of the lyrics. The attempt to put borderline hippie lyrics in this obviously war and violence-obsessed music is hilarious.>>129386467I like it a lot, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was just the right album at the right time. I could see a grind purist (if there's such a thing) calling it too death/thrash influenced.Do you have any recs for grindcore releases around that time which smoke World Extermination?
>>129386610>Do you have any recs for grindcore releases around that time which smoke World Extermination?I'm not a big grind person so maybe that's why, and I'd prefer more death or thrash influence. I think I was probably overhyped and just a bit underwhelmed.Around a couple years before/after 2007, for grind-esque albums I love I've got:>Anaal Nathrakh - Hell Is Empty And The Devils Are All HereBit biased as it's one of my favourite albums ever. I always shove them under like "Black/Deathgrind" but this is their grindiest by far. They released In the Constellation a couple years later that was less grind but even fucking faster.>Mistress - The Glory Bitches Of DogheadSide project of Anaal Nathrakh guys, finished on that album. Much slower grind, but great and catchy imo. They did In Disgust We Trust a couple years earlier that was also great.>The Red Chord - ClientsSeems to get slapped under "Deathcore" a lot but I consider it unfair. Feels way too manic and isn't breakdown addicted enough to be deathcore. That and the album's concept is cool.Anaal Nathrakh pre-Vanitas released a ton of my favourite material and Hell is way more grindy than anything they've done with only the debut coming close. I can't get enough of that album and the closer especially.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uqkm_MusRbYThe vocals are just "what if we abandoned all lyrics and screamed like we're twisting the knife in a pig's gut over machine gun double bass".
new Foreign Body released today through Brutal PandaStrung Out by Foreign Bodyhttps://youtu.be/dkd-KllIi4Y
I like this better than The IVth Crusade desu>>129386783Thanks. AN and The Red Chord are bands I have heard about on and off for a long time yet never checked out.Castigation and Betrayal is a little light on ideas listening to it out of context, but I noticed it closes the album, so I assume it depends on built up tension or momentum.
>bolt throwerand they shit on me for discussing ehnahre
>>129388791Wasn't me. Let's keep this from becoming /metal/ 2 and resist flinging shit at every opportunity.
>>129388879you're right anon, forget that.
>>129388939How would you Ehnahrepill the unfamiliar, and with what album? I understand it's very avant-garde death-doom right?
>>129389012Just drop some estrogen
>>129389012I've only heard two of their albums, today I checked out The Man Closing Up, it's more noise rock-ish and less experimental than the later stuff like The Marrow but still worth checking out. Anyway I would recommend The Marrow, expect some unique song structures, no riffs, instead a focus on atmospherehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ZzLwXWQzMI
>>129388713>Castigation and Betrayal is a little light on ideas listening to it out of context, but I noticed it closes the album, so I assume it depends on built up tension or momentum. It's the closer, meant to be a final release of energy. In The Constellation is more of an album of the same thing, but AN are essentially "what if you applied as extreme energy as you could to a pop song structure" so they usually have more hooks/choruses.Hell Is Empty is probably one of the more varied releases really besides maybe the debut as it is willing to slow down or have a track with just pig squeals instead of the usual.
>>129371957I didn't even know they had released this.I don't expect much from FA nowadays but there's usually a couple good songs per album, so checking it out.
Listening to early Nathrakh. Unnecessary for trying one album, but I've committed to it, so what the hell. These have some good tracks (Pandemonic Hyperblast particularly) but a lot of it fades into the background a little too easily.
>>129395478I find The Codex Necro very memorable but admittedly it's for like 50% of the tracks, but for what it's worth that's when they were at their most "raw".I'd say the next 2 albums, Domine and Eschaton, are probably not going to impress you, then they peak around Hell and Constellation, and then start devolving a bit more into industrial and coreshit influences that put me off a bit later. Until nowadays where every album is basically identical to the last besides "how many industrial samples Mick feels like using".
>>129395952Oddly, I'm enjoying Domine more despite it being pretty similar to the others. Could be the coffee.
>>129396308I find it starts strong and then tails off, same with Eschaton. But I've overplayed every AN album to high fuck so I'm warped.
Opium Warlords is breddy gud
>>129395952I noticed some metalcore ideas on DNED myself. One of the big parts of This Cannot Be the End is the typical stop-start chug syncopated with a crash cymbal, not bad but very odd to hear in what's nominally a black metal band.
>>129396467Well as DNED says, if you want a picture of the future...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OMYe7M26fZgI do not like this track.
>>129371957EVERYTHING'SFAHKINGDEEEEAAAYYYYDKinda glad Autopsy's still going and being one of the few old school bands where their modern albums, while nothing special, are still pretty damn good.
>>129396613Damn I do not like that either.>djent/core main riff>the solo that sounds like the guitarist doesn't know what the fuck he's doing
>>129397162That album and others do have some great tracks, at least as a fan of the band, but they do dive a bit too hard into the -core on some tracks that really kill albums. I do see them more as a singles band nowadays whereas I used to like more of their albums in full.
Christ, this album. I've listened to it a couple times before, thought it was alright, now it's hitting me like a brick for some reason.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=57AjwlIEYIIhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSdzG6LonyUhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U40oHpToisMBTW I found Eschaton to be a slightly worse version of DNED. Hell Is Empty was alright but I was disappointed with the constant pop structures, despite knowing this in advance. Some of those riffs are quite rockish, it reminded me of Wolverine Blues riffs.Apologies anon, I don't have the same enthusiasm for Anaal Nathrakh. Not right now anyway.
>>129389178I listened to The Man Closing Up twice. Still taking a minute to write my thoughts on it.
>>129399017>but I was disappointed with the constant pop structuresThen that will definitely be a roadblock and that's fine. They never drop that and if anything embrace it further with more clean choruses.
>>129389178>>129401251Of course I like it best when it's heavy. Riffs (or even the not-riffs) have an attack to them. It doesn't fall into the trap of totally amnesic meandering like some bands. The work put into timbre is good too. Plenty of fraying ends, squealing, and contortion that is hard to imagine the music without.Sometimes the pacing of the music is poorly done, IMO. Like the way Part I turns on a dime three minutes in, or the middle of Part IV with its long and tedious quiet vocal theatrics, before the clanging of a guitar decides it's time to move on. Occasional shifts in tone and long-lingering moments which feel arbitrary. But maybe that's deliberate.I like it, though I wouldn't call myself a convert, as this is more "interesting" music than visceral or exciting.
Im practicing making harsh noise/power electronics. I really like how this is coming out but Im constantly second guessing myself. Goal is to create a harsh noise and lullaby fusion for that horror sound. Can I get your input or critique:https://youtu.be/Kn_IgFrsMdc?si=ybiCH-altK5W54w3
>>129401713I can't into harsh noise outside of like Dragged Into Sunlight or Full of Hell putting a few minutes of it besides their actual music so I ain't much help.
>>129380870Hell yeah.
>>129380870>Not the demo with 19 minutes of wind sounds? And to think I get annoyed when a track opens with 3 minutes of just babies crying samples.
