never heard of this guy, is he as good a guitarist as having what is probably his own signature Kiesel makes me assume he is?

I like his country project.
>>
we already have a fantano thread up
>>
pro. even tho he's reddit, he's actually sincerely nice and quirky. his act never seems tryhard. not all of his albums are great, but there's always at least one nugget of gold in there.

empath is his greatest album.
>>
He’s an interesting character but his music is just terrible, as much as I want to like it
>>
>>129378719
my thoughts exactly. I wanted to like this album but just couldnt.

I dig him. Some really good stuff, though his albums can be inconsistant. Seeing him live is fantastic. Everyone should watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DrDM6V08wcE
>>
>>129377840
pro-ish, I've only ever listened to ocean machine and SYL albums THOUGH
>>
>>129379353
What about City?
>>
>>129377840
talented guy but he lost the plot around Deconstruction's release in 2011
he should probably quit making music and just produce music for a living
>>
>>129377952
Interesting: that is on a Alan Holdsworth body. I guess he's not using them anymore.
>>
>>129379475
I saw him live last year. What about you faggot?
>>
>>129380567
Man I remember when deconstruction was supposed to be his BIG Devin Townsend project album but then it turned out to be just pure shit. Addicted is the only decent album from him around that time

But really only ocean machine is worth listening nowadays
>>
Has further disappeared up his own ass the last 10 years or so but a lot of great music to be found in his huge discography and I'm still a big fan. I really like his ambient work. Wears dresses on stage, has talked about how he doesn't feel male or female at times and has admitted that he and his wife sleep in separate beds and that he regularly sees a "sex therapist" so he's most likely going to troon out soon, sadly.
>>
Personally I'm looking forward to Casualties 2
>>
>>129377840
I'll always respect that guy for his likeable personality and consistent music career. However, I have never listened to more than 20 seconds of any of his music, and I'm not interested in listening more. One megafan of him I met once at a concert, he even has the luxury of a very tasteful fanbase, still doesn't make me want to listen to his music.
Very good guy, totally uninteresting if you don't catch "the thing".
>>
>>129387145
You should listen to ocean machine, especially the last 3 songs. Its pure musical talent from a genius before he got quirky, depressed, mentally ill and reddit
>>
>>129377840
is it weird to not care much for his music but be glad that he exists? he's keeping something rare alive

Funeral might still be my favorite song of all time, it was for a very long time. I don't even think about Devy any more but its not like I've heard greater songs since
>>

I love him but don't care for most of his new albums, Addicted was probably his last great one

also I would pay an irresponsible amount of money for a re-release of ziltoid with real drums. the songs are really good but I can't stand that shitty vst drum sound.

TRUE
>>
>>129387685
And his greatest ever live performance is playing funeral, bastard and death of music live. Its not a coincidence ocean machine is GOATed

He's got a lot of albums and they aren't all good but some of them are really good and those are generally:
Ocean Machine (Biomech)
Accelerated Evolution
(SYL) City
(SYL) Alien
(and Ziltoid if you can take a healthy amount of ZANY humor)
A lot of people also seem to really like Empath. I personally like Sky Blue and Ki as well, but your mileage might vary with those.

What's wrong with Genesis? I'm not the biggest Devin fan (only know Terria, Ziltoid, and Empath like the back of my hand and have dabbled in a few others), but Genesis sounds like a pretty right down the middle type of Devy song.

I actually think Lightwork is his most underrated album. It's never talked about even by fans probably because it was overshadowed by Empath which came before it and heavily marketed as his magnum opus. I thought Empath leaned into the whole "I can do so many genres isn't that interesting?" thing too much and sounded unintentionally comical but Lightwork is a much more consistent and cohesive album that I enjoy a lot more than Empath.
>>
>>129391369
Did you see them on the Dream Theater/AAL tour? You want to talk about the crowd being cringe, how about fucking Dream Theater? I was laughing at them for the 15-20 minutes I stayed to watch their set. I'm not a Townsend fan by any means, but he absolutely shit on LaBrie. It was embarrassing as fuck watching that band try on stage.
>>
>>129391369
I saw him around 8 years ago and the crowd was fine
>>
>>129392426
Why did you see Dream Theater?
>>
>>129392407
Shame that Honeybunch was jettisoned from the album, would've been nice to hear a fully produced version
>>
>>129392426
I saw him open for Dream Theater (no AaL) and Devin gave the audience the "weirdest vibe award".

>>129392407
Nightwork is great too.
>>
>>129377840
Indifferent. I appreciate that Anneke van Giersbergen worked with him, but the man's music always bored the shit out of me. He's good at what he does. I just wish any of it moved me.
>>
>>129392426
>>129393938
Weird. I have been to DT concerts and DT concerts. The vibe was maybe a little bit younger, female, and weirder with more numales and tranny-adjacent shitters at the Devin Townsend show, but the crowds were essentially the same. I saw the recent(ish) Scenes from a Memory tour and the D/T tour, and Powernerd.
>>
>>129377840
I am pro Devin

I remember being like 16 and hearing SYL for the first time and loving it.

My mother also taught his son in high school.

I also used to buy greenage in a place in Vancouver that had one of SYL’s amps sitting at the end of a hall.
>>
>>129377840
He’s pretty bipolar and it comes out in his music a lot. He started out pulling lead singer duties for Steve Vai then eventually branched out to do his own thing. Very eclectic career and people writing him off immediately would do well to listen through some of his catalog as there’s likely something that will appeal to anyone. His maximalist wall of sound production approach bites him in the ass more times than I would like, but his composition and harmony work is pretty top tier, especially considering how barren metal usually is in those arenas.
>>
>>129378719
Filtered tastelet
>>
>>129387650
It’s a shame that for such a great album it sounds like a fisher price toy coming through a tin can speaker no matter what you put it through to listen.

>>
I don't think he gets enough credit for being an innovator. like, who else makes music that sounds like this?
https://youtu.be/DA4igUGBbdM?si=-g_nMk3cbf_JdT67
he gets tagged simply as "progressive metal" everywhere but I think that's a very low resolution description of what he does. it's more like post-metal or something: https://youtu.be/tJz-L3SbrLE?si=LXlNAmT6QIU-cAXh
>>
>>129394794
He's master of wall of sound, some of his songs sound like shoegaze metal
>>
>>129394852
totally, and he should be getting credit for that instead of deftones, who have fuck-all to do with metal, and not all that much to do with shoegaze.
>>
As a person, I think he seems like a neat, thoughtful and usually sincere guy. I've seen some of his interviews and he's definitely more interesting to listen to than the average metalhead, both in terms of music and non-musical discussions.

As a musician, I think he's alright. Some of his albums speak to me, but most of them just seem too theatrical, overemoted or otherwise contrived for my tastes. I respect that he makes the kind of music that he wants to make, but it usually isn't for me. I think Ziltoid, Ghost, Terria and Empath are great albums, and he's pretty damn prolific so I'm probably forgetting a couple others I also enjoyed. The Casualties of Cool album was also neat. Everything else is very "take it or leave it" for me.

Props for being one of the few actually good singers in prog rock/metal, though.
>>
>>129396117
>one of the few actually good singers in prog rock/metal

Frontmen of Opeth, Symhpony X, Fates Warning, Leprous, Pain of Salvation and Haken are great though
>>
devin's easily a top 5 rock singer, any genre. top 3 if you ask me.
>>
>>129396168
opeth's singer isn't very impressive when only looking at cleans, he has such limited range and not the best control/articulation. he's just a notable anomaly for having good growls and okay cleans all in once body

A fair chunk of Ocean Machine feels akin to shoegaze imo, specifically Voices in the Fan and Funeral. I think the fact that his vocals are mixed comparatively low on that record enhances the effect too

He's super-talented, great singer that can do any kind of rock/metal well, great writer, always evolving as an artist...

HOWEVER.... most of his music has a bit of a 'cringe factor' to it. I can't explain it, but I know I'm right. This is why he wasn't bigger despite being one of the most talented rock/metal guys in the 00's. Something about his work often gives off the ick, despite being objectively quite good.
>>
>>129392426
>Did you see them on the Dream Theater/AAL tour?
No but funny you should mention that, I'm seeing DT on Sat on Valentines day of all days, it's going to be a laugh riot (I just need to tick it off the list as I'm not really a fan but my Dad likes technical guitar players, I'm going to be stoned out of my mind regardless)
>>
I was obsessed with Synchestra 19 years ago
>>
>>129377840
He's smart. He knows he's smart. He tries to act like he's not. But he's too smart for the GP. Not in like he's a genius or genius musician, more like he tells an inside joke hoping everyone would get it but no one does. Also cringy. The music is a mixed bag but even if you look at this thread people call different albums essential. I like a lot of it and feel indifferent towards the rest, can't say I really dislike anything he did.
>>

That's it. He has "anime table at the highschool cafeteria" energy. If he was just a little cooler he would have been as big as Linkin Park or Slipknot, I think.
>>

>>129398790
No that's his ambient albums
>>
>>129377840
Everything up to Synchestra is pretty damn good, including SYL
>>
>>129377840
Neutral. Devin has an incredible voice and his guitar tone is immaculate. Strapping Young Lad were better than his solo work. For all the good, there is bad. Playing open tunings so the fingerings don't change is cheating. He's not a good guitarist, but Alien and City are undeniably great. His personality is annoying or snobbish without much in between. His music feels almost pompous, like he's trying too hard to be progressive. It's pretty simple stuff when you really analyze it.
>>129379353
I like City and Alien.

>>129379475

He seems to finally be moving on from his "put a choir in everything" phase, and looks to be slowly turning a corner, so I'm excited for his future output.

>>129405951
Funny because that's pretty much why Devin doesn't like Zappa
>>
>>129377840

His best from the 90's was Ocean Machine and City.

From the post-SYL era, I'd say Addicted -tho I haven't heard everything he's put out since, so I am a bit biased. I love the writing and the production on Addicted - I wish his later stuff would sound like that
>>
>>129377983

It's just a really well executed fusion of industrial metal and saccharine pop with incredibly beefy production. Doesn't overstay its welcome and almost all the choruses are catchy.
His later attempts at the same style (Epicloud, Sky Blue) tipped the balance too far into the sweet pop direction imo
