Rick Rubin tried to turn them into a serious alt rock band when they were never meant to be that; Kiedis is a dumb frat bro jock he can't be a serious artiste, it's just not in him.
In all seriousness Trevor Dunn and Flea are both really, really good players. Dunn is certainly more versatile of a bassit and plays with NYC experimental guys and orchestras and whatnot. That in addition to the rock shit with Bungle, Melvins, Tomahawk, etc. I've seen him play with Melvins using a bow. Flea I don't even think can read music, and he can be quite loose (code for tastefully sloppy), but he's very soulful and is a terrific live performer. Good trumpet player as well.
