Hot take :I love some 80s new wave songs… but I almost always like the covers more.Something about stripping away the early synth patches, gated drums, and 80s production “unlocks” the song. Once you free the melody + chords from the era-specific sound, the songs get better. And the genre doesn’t even seem to matter. If anything, the more unexpected the better:industrial/NDH-ish metal versions (Rammstein / Megaherz vibe)piano + choir / chamber-style takes (Scala & Kolacny Brothers territory)ska-punk flips (Goldfinger energy)Latin jazz / lounge reinterpretations (Nouvelle Vague-ish)electronic/trance reworksfull orchestra arrangementsacoustic, choral, solo piano, violin… you name itThey all seem to work better once they’re “freed from the 80s.”Anyone else feel this way? Drop your favorite new wave covers that beat the original (and tell me why).I like Megaherz's metal cover of Rock Me Amadeus.
