Gun powder has enough energy to propel a slug at a little over the speed of sound, it has more than enough energy to shatter glass at close distance. Many people have died playing around with blanks because they didn't understand the danger behind them. That being said, the energy of blanks disperses fairly quickly beyond 5-10 ft so the audience was probably still save.

None of it's shocking anymore. It's all been commodified, and if you show it to people they aren't shocked, they just see you as an edgy dweeb. Everyone's desensitized, and what once shook things up is now as boring and drab as milk.
