Proto-Punk is blown way out of proportion on RYM. Most of it is just Garage Rock (The Who - My generation, Kinks - You really got me) or Heavy Psych (Blue Cheer - I can't get no satisfaction). The only actual proto-punk songs, songs that are straight up Punk Rock before 1976 (MC5 - Borderline, Stooges - I Got a Right) are drowned out in the noise.
>>129478954very true. however i believe the stooges was the exact point when punk became a thing. Most punk bands were influenced by the stooges more than anything
>>129478954>Proto-Punkretarded frog poster
Link Wray doesn't get enough credit here.
>>129478954I've seen some people even list CCR songs as proto punk but they just sound like rock to me. Most times it's a huge stretch and the only connection the music has to punk is that punk is literally based on rock to begin with. People just want to feel special by listening to unpopulated subgenres.
>>129478954well the problem is that theres 5 different names for the same thinggarage = proto punk = punkthis happens all the time, not only this
For me it’s Garage Punk
>>129478984legend, by the 70s he was mogging all those punkshits with top tier yokel grooveshttps://youtu.be/thZxmobGelg?si=2NAcbRo5WB33O4aa
>>129478954Some guys planted the seeds for later punk. Yeah it sounded like rock when the who or the kinks did stuff but they were more ramshakle than anything that came before. The velvet underground started it really i think with their trashy attitude
>>129479242The velvet underground was just artsy rock n roll. The stooges started it
>>129478979What is it retard? Also in my opinion proto-punk isn't a real genre it's just early punk rock
>>129479242>>129479291heres a punk album
>>129479341thats literally just rock n roll
>>129479341This is textbook garage rock bro
>>129479357alright, show me textbook punk
>>129479371the stooges
>>129478954Not all Garage Rock is Proto-Punk. But many Garage Rock acts were Proto-Punk in some sense. Of course The Stooges and the New York Dolls were more "Proto-Punk" than The Sonics or TVU, but that doesn't mean the latter do count as Proto-Punk as well.
>>129479411do not*
>>129479371Anarchy in the UK
>>129479528sex pistols suck
>>129479543I don't disagree but they're textbook punk rock sound
Anybody that uses "proto-____" to describe an actual genre is fucking stupid and RYM should be burnt to the ground. The point of calling something "proto" is the novelty of "Hey, this kind of sounds like something that came later." It's purely incidental. To turn it into a full-blown genre is retarded, especially when these things were called different genres in the past.
>>129479313tell us something we don't know professor
>>129478954>rymers are autistic retardsyeah, we know.
>>129478954>into punk rock >uses RYMwhat the fuck's wrong with you?
>>129478979I don't even agree with OP but OP is saying it's not a real genre. What do you disagree with OP about?
for me it's proto-post-punkhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gjIzeWxgmc
>>129478954"RYM"Only an ape would gaf about what RYM does
>>129478954All that RYM crap you mentioned isn't proto-punk. How can the people who browse that site suck so much?Mc5, The New York Dolls.
>>129488065and the stooges.
>>129479242kinks are proto anything>>129479203sounds like the who
mfw every garage psych is also tagged with protopunkwidespread user voting was a mistake: ONLY a small elite of music connoisseurs, carefully vetted by mods and admins should apply genres. rym should assume its authoritarian curating instead of pretending to be democratic: the whole premise of genre-rating and genre-voting is inherently fascist (and that's a good thing).
>>129489962>ONLY a small elite of music connoisseurs, carefully vetted by mods and admins should apply genresthats why im making my own database of music, all by myself (it will take a lifetime tho)
