https://vocaroo.com/17acoFcdFXXBa demo ive put some effort into as a way to direct a potential EP release this year. the one thing i struggle with is the frequency masking that happens, particularly with the hard panned L and R guitars at the end when they are distorted and im not sure how to approach it. any ideas? when i fuck with the eq on the individual tracks, they end up sounding either too boxy or too harsh. also im not a singer, its something im working on. for some reason it sounds like i have a blocked nose when i sing.

https://vocaroo.com/11H5TsuJGbm7be honest with me. my friends think i should release this but some part of me is saying dont. Ive EQed it every which way and IDK i genuinely cant figure out whether its done or not.
>>129543833IMHO what you have is undeniably strong enough as is. Maybe sit on it for a bit that way you have better perspective on what improvements are necessary or not. I think the snare could possibly be louder but at a certain point you get diminishing returns from being too scrupulous. https://youtu.be/hAEQvlaZgKY?si=tXzD4OkkwI5iCmBN
>>129543883Thank u bro i appreciate it. I initially mixed it on 7506s which was a horrible mistake and ive been trying to salvage it on my monitors since then. My thinking was to make it super dense so theres a ton of detail to pick through but because of that its also an nightmare to mix.
>>129544020I know what you mean, I don't even have a monitoring setup right now so I end up doing everything on headphones for better or worse. The density definitely works, it's very lush which I personally love. Have you tried car/phone/laptop speakers as a reference point? Are you familiar with the fletcher-munson curve?

>>129543358It's a shame, cause even just 3 years back it was noticeably better than today. Obviously no general is perfect on this hellhole, but it actually had a few knowledgable and helpful anons, and responses to vocaroo's were generally a little better (not by much, but enough to notice a difference compared to now). Genuinely seems like there is now only a handful of regular posters here and they are all either midwits, trolls or bitter and jaded anons that have nowhere else to go. God knows what genuine oldfags to these generals think now. I imagine they are mostly (if not all) gone, anyway.
>>129544898I'm a complete newfag who gets all his knowledge from the Spectre Sound Studios Discord, so I can definitely recommend that. It's originally a metal 'cord but there are all types of producers there with legit know how, from electronic to hip hop to jazz. I only come here for the lolz.
>>129544819idk its still kinda stuck in my head and whatever vocalist anon sampled has a nice voice isnt that what really matters
>>129543833Gave it a listen on monitors and headphones. Feels like the bass needs more work. Not sure if it's limiter or sound design stuff, but it feels like it fluctuates a lot - lacks punch it's going for to drive the track and sometimes becomes a bit overbearing in places. Subjectively, those lyrics are fucking terrible and the track seems incomplete. Is it just an intro? It just comes across as one big build up that plateuas early and goes nowhere. I don't know if the percussion being minimal and surrounded by the other elements is intentional or not. All the other melodic parts are nicely done, though, I like the backing vocal flourishes, pads are nice and the sound design/choice there overall seems good.
>>129544964thats my voice, i sung on the demo
>>129544819>sidechain compressionsomewhat, just not sure what i should be sidechaining. desu i think the tone of my guitar is not so great either. i tihnk it needs new pickups
>>129545466well it sounds good. i wasnt really trying to listen uber critically which is maybe what you wanted but i just try to hear stuff how id normally listen to music. it has draw imo. make it better if you feel the need to.
>>129545507thanks, i appreciate the feedback all the same. probably better to listen to it as a consumer rather than a producer since thats how it'll mostly be presented anyway.
>>129545545i agree i think you should always evaluate music this way unless youre tryna glean specific things from something as a case study. its really difficult to separate the two with your own work and i think that can be a big part of the skill. an entry point to that in my experience is just vibing with your own music, fully inhabiting whatever world you're trying to build. i feel like i can hear that in your stuff it feels real its immersive.
>>129541712mix in mono if you're not already.>they end up sounding either too boxy or too harshime that's a sign that the tone or arrangement was fucked, but if the parts that stuck out to me are what you're talking about i'd guess you should try wider eq slopes and or adjusting volume. if you're not on pro-q i highly recommend it for identifying masking on easy mode.the distorted parts of this track sound quite good imo. the clean parts earlier on are poking out in a pretty awkward way though. cool stuff anon.
>>1295448130/5I AM QUITTING THIS IS AWFUL. it is the translation. i think they translated austrian-german psychology into english then into japanese then back into english. lord have mercy on my soul. some things should never be translated. but i agree on courage is good especially for art. watched this today: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D-GwRnBk-WY
>>129541712take out the guitar at 03:45 and change the vocals so they don't repeat as much. Good but gets tedious>>129543833Whatever comes in at 00:47 and 01:35 is too high pitched. Is this an intro? Sounds fine but it doesn't go anywhere
>>129543833release it as what? nothing happens. it isn't a song or a track. i don't want to come across as a cunt but no one will care about that. it's a synth, a drum loop, bass note and some barely hearable lyrics with nothing interesting happening.
I developed really bad tinnitus over the last few months and I was convinced it was my new studio monitors that did it, and I had irreversibly fucked my ears up somehow. Turns out I had shitloads of compacted earwax and getting it professionaly removed has pretty much cured it. Now I am free to give myself tinnitus more steadily over many years as god intended. Get your ears checked if there's any other anons suffering something similar.

Sometimes you need to learn pentatonics and familiarize yourself with sounds and chords you like so then you can use on command. Keep a notebook or a white board with notes though or at least on somewhere you need to have notes about progressions you like, so you can make harmony with it.

>>129551312I would prefer to produce everyday but yeah it doesnt NEED to be done. I did make a 4 bar loop on my live 3 this morning so I'll take that. Tomorrow I'm going to be digging into the MPC Bible again. Live 3 is a really fun tool, definitely keeping it paired with the 404. Honestly the live 3 pissed me off when I found out I couldnt take multiple audio sources in at once. With the 404, USB-C and 1/4 in inputs can be recorded at the same time, live 3 can only do 1 source at a time. That one feature alone makes the 404 worth keeping in my arsenal. Equipment wise im definitely good. I think a small midi for mobile work with the live 3 is all I "need" but no rush as well.
Did I just miss the Scaler 3 upgrade sale on Plugin Boutique? I could have sworn it was on sale until the 28th at least... Oh well. Guess I'll wait for Black Friday.

look at the gif. this is feedback.it is instant, not a lot of delay. you are not giving "feedback" ITT. feedback happens in the real world. not on the internet. you can not give "feedback" on the internet. you are asking for "review my art"no. it is not worthy getting a review. that is my last postwork on the wiki of this general, and then come back in a week, share your information and write a proper "this is /prod/" and here we stand and we are here not there type thing. you dont have common ground. that is why it is extremly easy for anyone to come here and destroy you. if i do what has to be done it will be illegal. because in the real world it can happen, and it happens instantly. but online it is quite the attempt of doing a cyberbully. find a partner in the real world that can do that. the bum on the gas station can give you better feedback than anyone here, because you can look at him while he listens. and what i do, and what everyone does will last for 2-3 days. then the effect is fading out anyway. it will be good in a few days again. if you stop letting it slide that people engage in cyberbullying ITT. it is not good for you. and i wont come here anymore. you need a mentor, not some literal who telling you something on the web. find a mentor, someone that says "you are worthy of my time"good bye /prod/, enjoy your general, in 2-3 days you wont even remember it anymore anyway. i correct what i wrote:>do not cyberbully each other EVER and call it out when it happens. but you are too afraid of "being le reddit" instead of just "doing what works"fucking skrillex lurking ITT stealing my melodies, i knew it.

you really thought this is all about cyberbullying?no. this is about 1984. it happened long ago. that is why you either start denying everyone around you and literally going back to the texts and translate them for yourself, or you stop talking about things that you have no clue about.like how to rule a city, that is politics. so now once again i simply say:Spread love, not hatred.
and you have to pick your camps..some have roots beneath them, and some not.

Hi ! anybody would like to collab and make something ? ambient , ambient dub, my main goal is to make something you can loop and repeat. dark or hopeful, I don't mind. I like weird sound sources too, like half life 2 sounds for exemple my strenghts are ideas, rhythm, coherent call and responses, overall anything to do with the session view. My weaknesses are sound design and arrangement. namedropping some inspirations : Huerco S , Ulla Straus, Purelink, Vladislav Delay, Boards of Canada, 2814, Brave Little Abacus, Akira Yamaoka, Les Rallizes Dénudés, J Dilla, Ultrafog, Kath Bloom, Stars of the Lid, Deepchord Echospace, Picnic, Spaceghostpurrp, Skee Mask, Susumu YokotaI never released anything besides DJ mixes and features (too overthink, throwing my works), currently working on a small EPmy discord : vsunbeams

is there any point trying to "formally" learn anything about production? mostly thinking music theory, but maybe also general best-practices, techniques, mixing/mastering and whatever elsemost of my current knowledge is just bits and pieces i've picked up, results of experimenting and/or just what sounds pleasant to my earsbeen at it for ~5y now and i don't think it's turned out too bad, but at the same time i feel like there's always room for improvementthat said i wouldn't even really know any good places to start, so if any anons have tips or advice then please do share
>>129575080no

>>129572484>The keys are already weighted so I'm not sure they can get better than that.Nah, there is definitely a difference between high and low quality weighted keys, but it sounds like what you have doesn't bother you, so that should be fine...Shit. I was going to tell you to look into MIDI Sound Modules, but it looks like the CDP-S360 doesn't have MIDI Out.If you can, it might be best to just go to a music store and try out a bunch of different stage pianos and see what you like. The Roland should be good though.
>>129576431Just out of curiosity what other ones where you going to suggest?
>>129576468Like some example sound modules? Roland Sound Canvas series if you want a wide range of general midi sounds; KORG MS2000R if you want synth sounds (you could almost think of this as a MicroKorg Rack unit); Roland Integra series if you have money. All those things require that you already have a MIDI keyboard with MIDI out to control them.I don't have stage pianos, but I do have a Kawai CA65 digital piano that I love and I will someday get a new Kawai CA so I can have one in every room of my house.

https://voca.ro/14FHseKsxz82 I like this mix a lot. Some things I need to fix: 1. Turn down guitars just a hair so the snare can pop through more 2. Eq guitars(?) For the same reason as above 3. Learn how to actually eq bass, though it sounds good there. 4. Add some more reverb on a send for the guitars. (I have the slightest room reverb on the guitars to simulate the guitar amp/cab sims being played in a room, it's almost inaudible until you pause the track and hear the tail for the splittest of seconds) 5. Play cleaner 6. Potentially fix some high end on the overheads in the midi drums 7. Git gud at mastering New things I did: 1. Sidechained the bass guitar to the kick to bring it down when the kick hits (-2 db more or less) 2. Sidechained all the guitars to all the guitars to bring out the snare more (-2 db more or less) (Both had very fast, almost instantaneous attacks, and somewhat fast releases with calibrated pre-comp to make up for latency) 3. Used dynamic splitting and stretch markers to make the guitars sound tighter but still somewhat natural4. Something I forgot to add when I posted on dmp: tried to hit 10 lufs with the mastering limiter, a master glue compressor at -2db, and a little bit of saturation
>>129580251Its all right
>>129580251It's a horrible mix. The guitars have no weight to them at all, it's disgusting to listen to. It's "metal", they need to sound heavy. I can only assume you've already eq'd the guitars to shit and are using a terrible amp sim. You haven't gain staged properly or your computer is shit (why not both?), cause there are audible pops and clicks at times. Forget your list that reads like it was lifted from the discord of some YT grifter, you need to fix things at a more fundamental level, otherwise you will be polishing a turds forever. No. 5 on your list is a major one, you need to make all takes as clean and tight as possible. Yours sounds like you have too much variation sometimes and it makes it sound mushy/unclear in places. You need to gain stage properly and sort out the pops and clicks so the takes are as clean as possible before worrying about mixing and effects. Work on your guitar tone, do a bit more playing with settings, or do some amp sim shopping and research about what is commonly used within the genre - I can definitely recommend Nolly X, it's a great all-rounder amp that would make your shit sound better immediately (but make sure to get it for free). Same for your bass and drums, do more upfront work on getting quality samples so you are working with sounds that need less processing. Make use of velocity on your drum hits to hummanise the playing, at the moment it sounds like everything is just maxed out for volumes sake. Composition is very awkward - sounds like what someone thinks metal sounds like without actually having heard very much metal, just random parts pieced together. Work on this heavily, keep writing constantly but also reference and listen to other stuff within the genere constantly. Again, forget about 'muh high end, reverb and lufs' and go back to basics.
Most of those great church pipe organs have midi input, they should just set up some mics and let people use it for their recordings remotely when the churches are empty for the night

>>129580786Make sure people can get in from the otherside so they can access your rotting corpse
>>12958077690% meme tier adviceThe crackles are from a vinyl/downsampling effect on purpose.I tested on several car speakers, monitors, earbuds, phone speakers, and the only audible crackling and pops (which wouldnt even happen even if you put an amp sim on a clipping di btw) happen at 1:36-1:44 and isnt heard after or before thatThe drums are slightly tweaked ML Drums and the everything is only hitting at like 90 velocityThe guitars only have eq to cut off everything below 50hz, a tiny, narrow notch at 3.5khz, and a shelf reducing everything over 10k by 3db. It's 3 panned guitars, all of them are an EVH 5150 neural amp modeler sound, 2 being panned guitars with the same sound, and the other being a lead center guitar with a slightly different 5150 sound. Modern metal mixes have shit compressed guitars with zero weight, which makes me wonder if that's why you dislike it so much (just listen to https://youtu.be/84ZhXE--cd8?t=2m21s the "heavyness" comes from everything like layring, bass, the drums, the tuning, BUT the actual guitars themselves, as opposed to https://youtu.be/Q2pCt6mnMWE where the guitar tone is really thick, also because of tons of layering but there is more range for the guitar and low end to breathe in comparison)Everything you said compositionally is purely based on your taste and as such I probably won't listen to any of itThe only thing you're right about is that I didn't gain stage, but even then, that wouldn't help when the modern metal mix is like -8 lufs and mastering to that loudness would clamp everything down anyway. It might help balance initially though, but limiters would determine it's fate at the endThe stuff about tighter takes is meme tier when you realize most modern productions heavily edit mid takes of guitars. >>129580360Definitely needs some work
