a demo ive put some effort into as a way to direct a potential EP release this year. the one thing i struggle with is the frequency masking that happens, particularly with the hard panned L and R guitars at the end when they are distorted and im not sure how to approach it. any ideas? when i fuck with the eq on the individual tracks, they end up sounding either too boxy or too harsh.
also im not a singer, its something im working on. for some reason it sounds like i have a blocked nose when i sing.

Gave it a listen on monitors and headphones. Feels like the bass needs more work. Not sure if it's limiter or sound design stuff, but it feels like it fluctuates a lot - lacks punch it's going for to drive the track and sometimes becomes a bit overbearing in places. Subjectively, those lyrics are fucking terrible and the track seems incomplete. Is it just an intro? It just comes across as one big build up that plateuas early and goes nowhere. I don't know if the percussion being minimal and surrounded by the other elements is intentional or not. All the other melodic parts are nicely done, though, I like the backing vocal flourishes, pads are nice and the sound design/choice there overall seems good.

i agree i think you should always evaluate music this way unless youre tryna glean specific things from something as a case study. its really difficult to separate the two with your own work and i think that can be a big part of the skill. an entry point to that in my experience is just vibing with your own music, fully inhabiting whatever world you're trying to build. i feel like i can hear that in your stuff it feels real its immersive.

I developed really bad tinnitus over the last few months and I was convinced it was my new studio monitors that did it, and I had irreversibly fucked my ears up somehow. Turns out I had shitloads of compacted earwax and getting it professionaly removed has pretty much cured it. Now I am free to give myself tinnitus more steadily over many years as god intended. Get your ears checked if there's any other anons suffering something similar.

I would prefer to produce everyday but yeah it doesnt NEED to be done. I did make a 4 bar loop on my live 3 this morning so I'll take that. Tomorrow I'm going to be digging into the MPC Bible again. Live 3 is a really fun tool, definitely keeping it paired with the 404. Honestly the live 3 pissed me off when I found out I couldnt take multiple audio sources in at once. With the 404, USB-C and 1/4 in inputs can be recorded at the same time, live 3 can only do 1 source at a time. That one feature alone makes the 404 worth keeping in my arsenal. Equipment wise im definitely good. I think a small midi for mobile work with the live 3 is all I "need" but no rush as well.

Did I just miss the Scaler 3 upgrade sale on Plugin Boutique? I could have sworn it was on sale until the 28th at least... Oh well. Guess I'll wait for Black Friday.

I've just been getting into production using Ableton and thought I had unbelievably bad rhythm.

Nah, there is definitely a difference between high and low quality weighted keys, but it sounds like what you have doesn't bother you, so that should be fine...
Shit. I was going to tell you to look into MIDI Sound Modules, but it looks like the CDP-S360 doesn't have MIDI Out.
If you can, it might be best to just go to a music store and try out a bunch of different stage pianos and see what you like. The Roland should be good though.

Roland Sound Canvas series if you want a wide range of general midi sounds; KORG MS2000R if you want synth sounds (you could almost think of this as a MicroKorg Rack unit); Roland Integra series if you have money. All those things require that you already have a MIDI keyboard with MIDI out to control them.
I don't have stage pianos, but I do have a Kawai CA65 digital piano that I love and I will someday get a new Kawai CA so I can have one in every room of my house.

I like this mix a lot. Some things I need to fix:
1. Turn down guitars just a hair so the snare can pop through more
2. Eq guitars(?) For the same reason as above
3. Learn how to actually eq bass, though it sounds good there.
4. Add some more reverb on a send for the guitars. (I have the slightest room reverb on the guitars to simulate the guitar amp/cab sims being played in a room, it's almost inaudible until you pause the track and hear the tail for the splittest of seconds)
5. Play cleaner
6. Potentially fix some high end on the overheads in the midi drums
7. Git gud at mastering

New things I did:
1. Sidechained the bass guitar to the kick to bring it down when the kick hits (-2 db more or less)
2. Sidechained all the guitars to all the guitars to bring out the snare more (-2 db more or less)
(Both had very fast, almost instantaneous attacks, and somewhat fast releases with calibrated pre-comp to make up for latency)
3. Used dynamic splitting and stretch markers to make the guitars sound tighter but still somewhat natural
4. Something I forgot to add when I posted on dmp: tried to hit 10 lufs with the mastering limiter, a master glue compressor at -2db, and a little bit of saturation

It's a horrible mix. The guitars have no weight to them at all, it's disgusting to listen to. It's "metal", they need to sound heavy. I can only assume you've already eq'd the guitars to shit and are using a terrible amp sim. You haven't gain staged properly or your computer is shit (why not both?), cause there are audible pops and clicks at times. Forget your list that reads like it was lifted from the discord of some YT grifter, you need to fix things at a more fundamental level, otherwise you will be polishing a turds forever. No. 5 on your list is a major one, you need to make all takes as clean and tight as possible. Yours sounds like you have too much variation sometimes and it makes it sound mushy/unclear in places. You need to gain stage properly and sort out the pops and clicks so the takes are as clean as possible before worrying about mixing and effects. Work on your guitar tone, do a bit more playing with settings, or do some amp sim shopping and research about what is commonly used within the genre - I can definitely recommend Nolly X, it's a great all-rounder amp that would make your shit sound better immediately (but make sure to get it for free). Same for your bass and drums, do more upfront work on getting quality samples so you are working with sounds that need less processing. Make use of velocity on your drum hits to hummanise the playing, at the moment it sounds like everything is just maxed out for volumes sake. Composition is very awkward - sounds like what someone thinks metal sounds like without actually having heard very much metal, just random parts pieced together. Work on this heavily, keep writing constantly but also reference and listen to other stuff within the genere constantly. Again, forget about 'muh high end, reverb and lufs' and go back to basics.

The crackles are from a vinyl/downsampling effect on purpose.
I tested on several car speakers, monitors, earbuds, phone speakers, and the only audible crackling and pops (which wouldnt even happen even if you put an amp sim on a clipping di btw) happen at 1:36-1:44 and isnt heard after or before that
The drums are slightly tweaked ML Drums and the everything is only hitting at like 90 velocity
The guitars only have eq to cut off everything below 50hz, a tiny, narrow notch at 3.5khz, and a shelf reducing everything over 10k by 3db. It's 3 panned guitars, all of them are an EVH 5150 neural amp modeler sound, 2 being panned guitars with the same sound, and the other being a lead center guitar with a slightly different 5150 sound. Modern metal mixes have shit compressed guitars with zero weight, which makes me wonder if that's why you dislike it so much (just listen to https://youtu.be/84ZhXE--cd8?t=2m21s the "heavyness" comes from everything like layring, bass, the drums, the tuning, BUT the actual guitars themselves, as opposed to https://youtu.be/Q2pCt6mnMWE where the guitar tone is really thick, also because of tons of layering but there is more range for the guitar and low end to breathe in comparison)
Everything you said compositionally is purely based on your taste and as such I probably won't listen to any of it
The only thing you're right about is that I didn't gain stage, but even then, that wouldn't help when the modern metal mix is like -8 lufs and mastering to that loudness would clamp everything down anyway. It might help balance initially though, but limiters would determine it's fate at the end
The stuff about tighter takes is meme tier when you realize most modern productions heavily edit mid takes of guitars.

The more I learn on the live 3, the more it seems like a replacement for the mk2. The plan wasn't to replace one with the other, I'm just having lots of fun with the live 3. The more I learn the more Im considering just 1 sampler. The 404 is faster when it comes to quickly recording an idea if I wanted to plug and play. But live 3 I can plug and play then build and mix the whole track on it. I think I'll go see how much I can get at GC.

It was always lower-adoption and poorly shilled vs major players, and the company's actions over the last few years first alienated many long-time users and then offered them the "olive branch" of using Reason as a VST in other DAWs ("oh, you want some workflow QoL features Ableton has had since 2018 implemented in Reason? I still like it, even though I still get caught up using cv cabling to do in 10 minutes what I could write in an automation lane in 1, even though they mangled the ui with the stupid "people don't like floating windows in 202X so we should move all the stuff they're used to to make things prettier", but I don't recommend it to anyone without caveats.
