>>129556340Her first two albums, especially The Echo, have a certain innocence to them that would be lost by the time she went commercial on Now That the Light Is Fading. The whole album is a farewell to adolescence and the anxiety of entering adulthood, but what distinguishes it is its strong emotional centerpiece on the closing track "Satellite" which she wrote at age 17. The song is a slow ballad about yearning to be free yet seen that crescendos at its lyrical climax, and damn, do those closing lyrics hit hard:>So send me out to space and cut me free>And like a satellite, just look for meBlood Ballet would continue much of those themes, although instead of mourning adolescence, these would confront the first steps of adulthood. The lyrics here, while deeply emotional, are much rawer and unleashed without being scornful. While lacking a strong emotional centerpiece, the album still features lovely tunes like the homage to her high school boyfriend "James" who also happened to play trumpet on "Satellite".For the sake of this thread, here's her early live performances:https://youtu.be/by8KasYibdYhttps://youtu.be/EYTr2e2_0SM
here's your indie star's childhood home
>>129556340her major label debut is one of the worst albums I’ve ever heard
>>129564120We've been over this before. It's common knowledge she's a silver spoon brat.>>129564329Like I said, HIiaPL really isn't my style. Sure, Retrograde, Light On, Fallingwater and Burning are worthy but the rest of that album is mediocre.
Steady as a rockI stand, I waitWith eyes that seeBut eyes that can't eraseAnd hands that holdBut hands that can't embraceA creature longing for some saving graceOh and I have long sinceSeen the sunIt set along the banksWhen I was youngOh, and it's been longSince you've been nearBut fate was never kind to us, my dearSo send me out to spaceAnd cut me freeAnd like a satelliteJust look for meOh and if there's darknessIn your sightI'll be in the corner of the nightWe liveWe growWe dieIt snowsThe roTationThe earthThe sunWe writeWe readWe loveWe needWe needWe needWe needI needI needI needI needI needSo send me into spaceAnd cut me freeAnd like a satelliteJust look for me
>>129556340What irritates me so much about Don't Forget Me is that the album was such a missed opportunity. As though she wanted to be the Millennial Natalie Imbruglia or LeAnn Rimes, two artists who I consider to be sonic wallpaper. "Torn" is the definition of waiting room music. It's not that the title track and The Kill aren't great because they are, but the rest of the album ranges from above average at best to dreck at worst with most being utterly mediocre. If there's a single word that sums it up beyond forgettable, it's inconsequential. The whole album's concept is breaking up and moving on, but there's no payoff.
>>129566146Torn is streets ahead of anything Maggie Rogers has ever recorded.
>>129566467And it sucks ass. A forgettable Alt-Rock tune reimagined as waiting room Pop Rock.
>>129556340I am sad there was no thread title. I lost 5 seconds of my life opening this and realizing who it was about.
