Why should I leave frets 1 through 5, when I can play anything I want there? It's where everything is safe, where everything makes sense. Guitar Hero happens there. Maybe that's why.
I do not fret the man that practiced one thousand frets a single time; I fret the man that practiced one fret a thousand times.

>>129571718I mean yeah that’s one way to do it I think and that certainly builds a lot of vocabulary, but sometimes it doesn’t give you the answer of how to improvise in the style of someone. I’ve been studying James Jamerson’s bass lines for the last two years; I’ve learned and played probably 30 of his recordings. It can be broken down into 3 types of devices: harmonic devices, chord-connecting devices, and rhythmic substitutions. He had this ability to write basslines that were heavily syncopated counter melodies to the vocals, filled with flurries of notes that somehow stayed in the pockets without overplaying. Here are two examples of songs like:https://youtu.be/LEyD0qBFUNghttps://youtu.be/DSMLUjukpRU1/2
>>129571814But if you break down every single bassline, every 1st and 3rd beat which are the strong, harmonic beats of a measure in western music (including anticipations) he ALWAYS plays a chord tone on that beat no matter how dense or syncopated the playing. He recorded a couple hundred if not more songs at Motown but he had a couple dozen intervalic devices that he liked to favor and was drawn to certain ones in specific keys, like octave drops when playing in F. He would play with the length of these devices sometimes playing a one bar phrase over two bars or even condensing it down into a single beat or two. Then he would use scalar or chromatic devices to gently walk up to the next chord change unless he was playing riff based songs or pedaling. I’ve understood the devices and rhythmic substitutions for a long time but I had to practice writing quarter note jazz basslines for a year to even begin to understand his harmonic and melodic framework. I’m still not there but it all just finally clicked together recently.
https://voca.ro/1hoPcnrC16mt
>>129571838It sounds kind of lame typing it out like this but it was important for me to understand how a session player could write what is considered the most dense, in the pocket, melodic basslines in 15-20 minutes and also served the song without overplaying.
>>129571814>>129571838based wizard
>>129571888thanks mane. the final piece of the puzzle was learning that the passing notes including the devices on beats 2 and 4 were always just chromatic/scalar connections to the chord tones on beat 1 and 3. I don’t play guitar really outside of strooming but it would be interesting to figure out what makes someone like steve lukather tick

Maybe it's not heard through there. If I use split coil and positions 2 3 4 on my superstrat I can hear the buzz sometimes but not really with humbuckers. I can tolerate it because I like playing with almost no relief in the neck more than the occassional buzz that I'll suffer when I smack the low E string.

>>129574919even with a coil split what's the point of the non-split humbucker position? sell me on this. in my experience if I want to switch from a single coil guitar to a humbucker guitar i need to redial my amp at the very least, not something I want to do at the flip of a switch
>>129574472>You might need a fret level and crownI checked them with a fret-rocker and they're pretty even (barely any rocking).Damn, John Suhr says they set theirs up to 1,5mm at the last fret! That's like 1,3mm at the 12th. Crazy. It's also interesting to see that he's pretty much checking everything like the majority of people online (and how I check mine). It's interesting how he sets his intonation up. He checks on the 3rd fret (G), because it takes the "nut out of the picture".I think my nut is a bit too high, but I don't think that lowering the nut height would help get rid of the buzz. If anything, it would make it worse I reckon.
>>129575005>if I want to switch from a single coil guitar to a humbucker guitar i need to redial my amp at the very least, not something I want to do at the flip of a switchthis is what an EQ pedal is for
>>129575005>i need to redial my ampDo you hate fun and experimentation?
bring em both back
>>129575029i don't know what this has to do with fun an experimentation, that's why i asked. are you treating switching to the humbucker like turning on a boost pedal and you want the extra breakup/distortion you get from the larger output?
>>129574840>>129574868I am planning on ordering a rat this week but I don't have an EQ pedal for guitar yet. This is my current guitar board. I might return then goblin but the only other things I was looking to add were the rat and EHX stereo cathedral. I was thinking about getting the canyon delay/looper deluxe but maybe in a few months.
>>129575018this doesn't make sense to me. why have an extra pedal on your board to correct the output of a humbucker when you could just have pickups with equal output
>>129575043every guitarist in the world has a blues driver, a big muff, and a rat. you don't have a rat yet, so you're not a guitarist. easy problem to fix

>>129575041I switch to the humbucker when I want a different sound. I don't really think about adjusting my amp. It's just another colour on my colour palette that I can play with. I don't consciously think ahead "I need to adjust the base colour of this painting before I apply this other colour".
>>129575124I would get a MIM, but the only one I can currently find for sale is in japan via ishibashi might have to poorfag and get a paranormal to hack apart
>>129575134the humbucker is louder. if you amp is set to be clean and you switch to the humbucker it will not be clean. this isn't necessarily a bad thing but im asking if you do this on purpose, i want to know why you want a guitar like this. answers like this sound like "idk man i just think the guitar is cute and this other stuff doesn't matter to me"
>>129574089My extended family brought me this one from abroad (3rd world). I told my parents that I want to start learning to play the guitar and they bought me an entry level classical guitar, a self-learning book and a tuner. That's the kindest thing anyone has ever done for me when I think about it.It's been 20 years now and it has cracks from all the humidity changes. I regret selling my first electric that I had, but at least I got to keep the most important one.
>>129575143I don't find the difference in regards to output/gain that prominent, but even if it does start sounding slightly more overdriven, even better. It's like as you said, built in boost/EQ pedal without touching anything else. Also, I can chug on the bridge humbucker and play soothing, smooth cleans on the neck P90 on the same guitar.
>>129575143I want a single coil platform, as I have three guitars with humbuckers. I spent most of my time playing on les paul scale lengths, hence the appeal of the cyclone. Putting a stag mag on a cyclone would give me accurate single coil, but with humbucker options
>>129575124I liked the Cyclone way before I knew he played one. Their old MVs have him with a Tele most of the time.https://youtu.be/t4ETUI56vXU
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fUZ7LiB40sQI am so tempted to do this. Or at least get one of those fret levelling bars for starters, since my frets are literally new. This seems like it would be something fun to do. I'd even do other people's guitars for free, since there's no realistic situation where I'd use the tools more than 3 times, but I don't want to ruin them.
>>129575227good answer>>129575256bad answer. "humbucker option" THE QUESTION IS WHY DO YOU WANT THIS OPTION. ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU HAVE HUMBUCKERS ALREADY
>>129575467>WHY DO YOU WANT THIS OPTIONso I can take one guitar with me
>>129575478im kind of tired of this conversation its gone too long but i would still like to know what you are actually using it for. it sounds like you are just making purchasing decision to keep options open to you because you don't have an actual sound yet you are just consuming gear. when you actually start playing music you will realize there is one sound that you like and a frankenstein guitar trying to be two things at once is just an artifact of your indecision
>The Stag Mag is a unique high output versatile humbucker pickup that uses staggered alnico 2 rod magnets instead of the traditional bar magnet, for Strat tone when split.Pretty cool. Website doesn't say if it's designed for 500k or 250k though?
>>129575553jesus christ you are obtuseI just like to play music with my friends and jam.I play many different genres, and have a mixed group of people I play with. I want to be able to do some of the teenage dream sounds which I have to currently EQ extremely hard to capture right now, but the humbucker would let me hit some mudhoney tones.

>>129575625nah, you're the faggot that can't understand why having flexibility would be good. I don't want 5-10 guitars to do different things. I just want three (I will sell one of my other three) that can do many different things (not counting my acoustics)
>>129575553What's this "you must not actually play if you like versatility" nonsense, even on two single coils you'd have three sounds not just one. With a split he has five, what a nightmare.>>129575598Mudhoney with the guys is pretty based.
>>129575658i'm not interested in "flexibility is good" that means nothing. i'm insterested in what YOU use it for. if the reason is "flexibility is good" then i'm 100% right in saying you made this decision from indecision. if you want a single coil and a humbucker for an actual reason (like i suggested, a free boost), then I can respect that. i don't respect you

Does a different voicing serve the same purpose in a chord progression?I.E. the VII of Em is D but what if I play Dsus4 or Asus instead? Same
Does it sound good?
>>129576211changes the tension of the song even if it has the same harmonic value so technically no. you can even use voicings to imply chord movement when there is none. it won’t sound out of key at least
>>129576211first of all, a sus chord isn't a voicing of a major chord, it's a different chord. a voicing is the same chord played with notes in different positions on the fretboard. a Dsus4 chord has different notes in it than a D chord. you use a sus chord because it's ambiguous, you use different voicings for voice leading and for their timbre
>>129576250Thanks, that makes sense.I suppose what I should have asked especially for >>129576245 is if playing a sus chord is still progressing the chords even if it is ambiguous sounding due to the third being substituted for a 2nd/4th
>>129576076Every single one on reverb was the same price after shipping cost so yeah I paid 88
I'm used to playing .009 gauge strings on electric how much different will .01 strings be
>>129576310it just adds tension, I would not say it is driving the song unless you specifically voice lead. you have to be cognizant of what the bass is doing. if you are trying to play with the harmonically strong beats of the measure in or have a lot of contrary motion it may just end up sound bad. only way to know is to experiment
It's pretty funny that I have a pedalboard for my guitar and all I'm planning on playing is my guitar method book
>>129575651Children's toy. This is a REAL man's rat pedal.

>>129577520No locking mechanism = butt joint.sad.Could easily throw a loose tenon or 2 in there or even some dowels or splines. But nopeButt joints.Murica.
It's not the joint that's breaking. You have end grain shooting out of the neck joint. Wood likes to split parallel to the grain. The material is weaker right where Gibson players are dropping their guitars on their heads. The ugly Temu joints that don't give a crap about aesthetics are stronger because the separate grains are cross hatched.
>>129577533>hooks and doves aren't locking mechanisms but splines aretell me more about butt joining
None of you know SHIT so shut the FUCK up
>>129577574But Gibson doesn't do that.
Power supply suggestions for a little Pedaltrain Nano board? I’ve already got the board, just no power. I want a small board just for acoustic stuff with no more than 5 pedals (probably not even 5 honestly) because I'm tired of taking my main electric board for acoustic stuff and not using half the pedals/taking most of the pedals off. Having a dedicated little acoustic board just seems convenient.
i dont see any joint looks like a one piece cut like martin
>>129577632You can't see a good joint dipshit
>>129577641you don’t look for the joint line you look for the grain mismatch dumbass
uh oh someone struck a nerve
https://vocaroo.com/1fyFOqpdy2wEfirstly this is very loud at max volume so i would suggest turning it down. 2nd this is not a good vocaroo it is me stumbling C, Em and G not being able to get the sound right. i mostly just wanted to show my tone which i like but its really bad. now im going back to playing learning Ode to Joy in the guitar method book.

What's the point of even picking up the guitar today? I'm still dogshit after 20 years a couple hours of practice won't change that.
>>129578048I have very structured practice and am not distracted during. I will not check my phone or noodle at all during practice. I also oriented my goals towards developing my ear and improvising instead of wasting a bunch of time on weird techniques. if I need a new technique to play something in my head I’ll learn it but I don’t waste any time on doing finger exercises. the other 50% is jamming with other people that are better than you

>>129577879Yeah, check out my pre-war Gibson 12 string
>>129578322looks like Harvey Weinstein's egg penis
you guys seeing this
>>129575012My guitar is not a Suhr but 1.3mm at the 12th is doable yeah. Lowering the nut would lower the general action a bit and it might worsen the fret buzz when you're playing open strings, but shouldn't make fret buzz from fretted notes worse. Sometimes it's just the strings being bad or getting old. Like my high E string, when it gets old and becomes floppier it's quick to buzz when playing the open string and the first few frets (since my relief is almost null). My last low E string wasn't buzzy before replacement but the new one is, so much so I raised the bass action tiny bit.TLDR try changing strings - skinny ones get buzzier over time, thick ones can be buzzy when brand spanking new
only the boring flatline schizo is left :(
