Has there ever been another band with more talent involved in it at one time than early 70s Genesis,?

gabriel was the weak link, couldn't play an instrument either. band improved once he got kicked out

Gabriel was a classically trained flutist and could read music. He was involved in the creative process between every member of the band.

He was also the primary lyricist and primarily drove the direction of the band during his tenure. He single-handedly came up with the concept for Lamb while the rest of the members came up with the music for it.
To say he was the weak link is ridiculous. Michael Rutherford was always the weak link in the band.

Megadeth's from 1990 to 1998. All four of those dudes are incredible musicians.

Jeffrey Hammond was notoriously a bad bassist, taking multiple takes to get his lines down

Yes. Early 80s Genesis, Dream Theater 1987-1994 and all different versions of Frank Zappa.

Talentless hacks. Liquid Tension Experiment is almost the worst shit I've ever heard in my life and Tony Levin couldn't even save it.

As far as the 70s go, Gentle Giant and U.K. come to mind as well as Red-era and Discipline-era King Crimson
plus Van Halen on their debut although they were more pop oriented
Plenty of fusion adjacent bands feature heavy hitters all around, Mahavishnu Orchestra were unreal at their peak and Zappa's live bands too

Calling Mike the weak link in any case is an exaggeration, I think he just did whatever the band needed and stayed out of the way whether it was 12 string guitar parts or bass but listen to the bass line in Los Endos, it's ferocious and on par with Chris Squire's stuff. He could play, I just think he was a lowkey guy

How do you measure talent?

I am nominating Talking Heads and early Sisters of Mercy, maybe 70's Black Sabbath - there's lots of great bands that had a lot of potential to make great albums but I don't know how to measure talent per band member. It's not like we have them run a mile
