Hey if any of you are ever in Queens there's this 16 year old shithead named Bob Christgau. If you see him be sure to kick his ass. Especially after he's done talking about how Elvis promotes toxic masculinity.
>"Sweet Little Sixteen" was about an 11 year old girl Berry saw at a rock-and-roll revue who was trying to get as many performers' autographs as she could.[2]And he had to change it to 16 to be semi-sellable when the girl he's singing about was actually...fuck this shit, I'm outta here.

>>129602043Fine, Connie you win. You're actually Important. Sheesh, take the $50 I bet you in that Patterson lunch counter last summer that you and the Billboard would never meet already.
This country chick Patsy Cline - you think she's got staying power? Maybe.
>After over two years of frustration without any of her records charting, Francis finally scored her breakout hit with "Who's Sorry Now?", a pop standard dating from the 1920s that her father liked. The song reached #4 on the Billboard in early 1958 and put her on the map as one of the biggest pop acts in America for the next seven years.
>>129602165Basically, if you look into it WSN was a new kind of laid-back pop sound that connected when the US economy had slipped into recession starting in late 57 and the general feeling then was slow the pace down a little. High energy pop of the kind that acts like the McGuire Sisters did was going out of style. You will no doubt notice that Sam Cooke also reflected this new, more chill vibe.
That string of early '58 hits like "At The Hop", "Sweet Little Sixteen", and "Sugartime" were the last wave of energy music before the rock-and-roll era ended and slower stuff came back into style.
>>129602203"Dream Dream Dream"?
>>129602312Yes that of course. Also only in the 50s could you get away with saying "Gee whiz" in a song. In any later era it would be...corny and only done ironically.
>>129602173>>129602043Ah I could have had them. Why did I let them get away from me? Probably because I'm an idiot who thinks signing Beverly Ross was a good idea instead.
>>129602344>On March 8, 1958, Mitch Miller addressed the First Disc Jockey Convention in Kansas City. Miller said that DJs across America had made the mistake of spinning content aimed exclusively at 8-14 year olds, a demographic whose purchasing power "once you eliminate ponytail ribbons, popsicles, and peanut butter brittle, is nearly nil. On much of today's radio we're lucky to get a grown up hour anywhere before midnight. Adults all over the land are yearning for a pause in the day's cacophany. I too believe youth must be served, but how about some music for the rest of us?" His remarks were widely reprinted in the national press.

The record sold but Jerry was pretty much banned from the radio during 58 so it got little or no airplay.
as someone else said, the economy began a recession and it contributed to a big shift in the culture. the new pop sound which Connie Francis and the Everly Brothers epitomized was slower, laid back, and spacey. the overall vibe was slow the pace down a little. the last big burst of rock-and-roll was in the winter months of 58 and by summer the chart hits are definitely getting slower and relaxed.
>During the hearings over the Smathers Bill, Frank Sinatra issued a statement to the effect that he hoped to see media companies and record labels divested from one another (his own Capitol was notable for not being a subsidiary of a media company). The Voice also renewed his old feud with Mitch Miller by accusing him of "taking substantial sums from songwriters whose songs he recorded." Miller said that Sinatra took certain remarks of his out of context.>Appearing at an Entertainment Press Conference, a weekly feature of NYC's WABD, Miller was attacked by three critics, who, perplexingly, blamed rock-and-roll on him. Later in the year when he was on WMCA's "The Barry Gray Show", Miller was forced to take the side of R&R, or at least deny it contributed to juvenile delinquency. He argued that children were the product of their upbringing, not their music, and suggested they listened to R&R because it offended their elders.
>A week later, Miller appeared on an interview show with three other A&R men. He and Sammy Davis Jr. hosted and both were openly anti-R&R with Miller calling it "the comic books of pop." Arnold Maxin of MGM said it was because kids had more spending money nowadays. He added they didn't have trained ears and could hear nothing but a beat and noise. Maxin continued that he doubted R&R was going away any time soon. Davis replied "I might just kill myself.">Asked about Eddie Fisher's sudden collapse in popularity over the past year, Hugo Winterhalter of RCA said the past year had been a "nightmare" to him and many established stars and arrangers. Only Milt Gabler of Decca was positive towards R&R. He credited it to Louis Jordan and said "Bill Haley is one of my children, but Louis was the one who started it. If I could go back with him and start over again things would be diferent.">The establishment took every stat they could find to boost their spirits. Pulse and Nielsen surveys showed that adult women, not kids, were the majority of Top 40 listeners, a number of station managers announced that a counter trend to top 40 was shaping up.
>Billboard's annual disc jockey survey for '58 showed a clear discrepancy between DJs' preferences and the records they were spinning. Frank Sinatra once again won the poll for favorite male vocalist, with Perry Como and Nat King Cole coming in behind him. Of the entire group of eleven names, only Pat Boone and Elvis himself had begun their recording careers since the emergence of rock-and-roll four years ago. Favorite female vocalist was Doris Day, followed by Patti Page and Peggy Lee. The female list was absent of anyone whose recording career had begun since rock-and-roll broke. Favorite Singing Group was The Four Freshmen followed by the Ames Brothers and Four Lads. Of the ten picks, only the Platters were identified with rock-and-roll, and their specialty was updated versions of pop standards. All the listed acts aside from Boone and the Mills Brothers were signed to one of the establishment ASCAP labels.
>Eminent musicologist Sigmund Spaeth wrote in an Encyclopedia Yearbook "The incubus of rock 'n roll continued to weigh down on the popular music of the year, with a majority of the music representing some form of the illiterate, savage noise. The violence of this juvenile concentration on aboriginal rhythms actually led to several cities eventually barring rock 'n roll from public performance." Dr. Spaeth, who broadcast as "The Tune Detective", a show where he uncovered the origins and sources of contemporary songs, revealed something of his bias when he wrote "One of the biggest sensations of the Hit Parade was a definitely Negro exaltation, He's Got The Whole World In His Hands.">Reflecting the older generation's desire to pray the new music out of existence, he concluded "The recent history of popular music in America may be summed up in a series of comparatively meaningless titles such as Tequila, Lollipop, Sugartime, Diana, Kewpie Doll, At the Hop, Honeycomb, Chances Are, Short Shorts, The Stroll, Get a Job, Raunchy, and Silhouettes."
>>129608707In all fairness Mr. Spaeth was an old old fart in his 70s at the time, he was born back in the previous century.
>>129608699Here, I will show you the Billboard survey.
And the female one. These are 100% totally predictable.
The singing group list, also highly predictable.
>>129608699>Of the entire group of eleven names, only Pat Boone and Elvis himself had begun their recording careers since the emergence of rock-and-roll four years ago.Actually not quite true since the list also included Johnny Mathis who started recording only in 57. Not that he ever had anything to do with rock, but just saying is all.
>>129608776It's clear from these lists that these guys liked the safest and least offensive singers. Even Teresa Brewer and Kay Starr are absent probably because their singing was a little too spicy.
>The Catholic Youth Center of Minneapolis called on the nation's DJs to not play what it termed degenerate songs. This included Elvis's "Wear My Ring Around Your Neck" and Jimmie Rodgers's "Secretly" for encouraging teens to sneak around and fool around behind their parents' backs. George Hamilton IV's "Why Don't They Understand?" was listed for encouraging youngsters to disrespect their elders' authority. Sinatra's "All the Way" and "Witchcraft" were listed as having suggestive lyrics.>The CYC's newspaper Contacts said "Smash the records you possess which promote a pagan culture and pagan way of life. Check beforehand the records which will be played at a house party or a school record dance. Phone or write a disc jockey who is playing a lousy record. Switch your radio dial when you hear a suggestive song. Some songwriters need a good swift kick. So do some singers. So do some disc jockeys." Along the records Contacts considered "acceptable" included "Witch Doctor", "Purple People Eater", "Kewpie Doll", and bizarrely, "Rumble."
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l63LZRe0OKgJill Corey's last record to chart. She was hot but clearly a born in the rong generashun kind of singer.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E1mhPktmjW8As you might guess, this is an early Burt Bacharach tune. You might also guess with a high degree of accuracy that the Association's "Windy" was stolen from this song.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xbBCbe8SLrcYoutube censors the song title since it apparently thinks "daddy" is a porn search term.

>>129609470>The Neil Sedaka-penned "Stupid Cupid" was, according to Francis, the first original rock-and-roll song a girl singer had a hit with. "There were others who had rock-and-roll hits before me, but they were cover versions," she recalled.[3]

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y_Ku2KKW5EgLots of short-lived groups in this period who had a hit or two and vanished. The Mello-Kings are one such example. Four hits in a nine month stretch in 57-58 and that was it for them.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_m3qCLcJ_EcThis was the only Billboard appearance for the Kirby Stone Four, a couple of nearly middle aged Jewish dudes from Brooklyn whose comedy singing act had a certain following in the 50s-early 60s. >>129611171That Route 66 cover was recorded in '55, didn't look into the rest. It's an ok version of the song but not as good as the Crosby/Andrews Sisters one from the '40s.
The 1950s will go down in history as one of the worst decades in music. Nothing but generic pop songs written for adolescent youths (or "teens" as we're calling them now). Whatever happened to REAL music? Aaron Copland, Roy Harris, Walter Piston, Al Jolson, etc. now what's in style? Teeny bopper shlock about drinking soda pop and eating hamburgers and going on dates to the movies? And at most the songs will be between 1-2 minutes max, because these little boomer kids have the attention spans of a Labrador. I would like to if I may, compare the modern state of music to a can of chicken soup. A once healthy meal cooked by your mother or grandmother with love and care, using fresh ingredients from the local farmers market and a healthy chicken from the local butcher, now sold in a toxic metal can full of preservatives and other kind of ungodly Ingrid you wouldn't feed to your worst enemy. And that's what modern music is, just quick, disposable, worthless garbage that won't even be remembered 3 years from now. Music is doomed.
