What's the next upgrade bass wise from a fender p bass? Are rickenbackers good with distortion? Was thinking of trading the p bass and my micro synth for an upgrade since im slowly getting better at bass. However I'm attached to my bass and I kinda dont wanna trade it.

I think I associate pitches with feelings instead of groups of pitches with them. Every chord with a high root sounds diminished and every chord with a low root sounds augmented
I know it's a bad habit but I've been doing 'if it has a tritone it's diminished'
This will come back to bite me

I wish I was just a naturally good singer I don't want to pay for lessons
Learning an instrument yourself is easy, learning to sing well yourself is hard
>>
>>129630073
I don't mind that. I'll check those out. I think I'll look into a rickenbacker as a backup maybe. I like the name so I want one based off that alone.
>>
>>129630192
the only thing in the way of singing well is ego and a good ear
sing loud and proud and don't lie to yourself about your pitch or your range
>>
>>129630192
Real. I took over a year worth of lessons and I still have trouble making it work. Sounding bad on an instrument isn't nearly as embarrassing as bad singing
>>
>>129630232
>Sounding bad on an instrument isn't nearly as embarrassing as bad singing
That's because everyone has either sang at some point in their life or focuses on vocals in songs they listen to so they innately knows what sounds good.
That being said, if you're an above average singer everyone will think you're a superstar because they can't sing
It's also easier to sounds good singing your own songs than someone elses
>>
>>129630232
How old are you? If you're older that might be why, it's hard to learn new things as you age.
>>
>>129630249
>if you're an above average singer
Easier said than done. There's a crazy amount of working parts that go into singing and it's all internal. I think it can feel more personal because it's tied to your natural tone.
>>129630257
20's. I have trouble with nasal resonance, and my neck/jaw has a bad habit of tightening itself which really chokes the voice. But I blame a lot of it on not practicing enough.
>>
>>129630302
at least you aren’t born with vocal cord dysfunction. I’ll never be able to single because I have a naturally dissonant overtone in my voice. if I sing next to a chromatic tuner it goes nuts
>>
>>129630302
I'm in my 20s too, I'd like to take lessons soon

Been playing for 8 years now. I still cannot consistently sing while playing songs. Is it over for me? Has anyone had this issue and can provide tips
>>
>>129632172
I can only play & sing with vocals that are tied to the riffs rhythmically. Like my hands are voice are connected and I'm not sure how to disconnect them
>>
>>129632173
pick a simple strumming pattern on one chord, read subtitles out loud on the tv while continuing to strum. once you can do that with ZERO issues and only then, start increasing the rhythmic complexity. give that 3-4 weeks then you can start adding chord changes. you have to read out loud, or have a conversation with somebody or talk to your tv.
>>
>>129632172

>>129632509
look at old rifles, the wood has began to darken and rot from oil running off of the receiver and into the stock. I imagine the same could happen to a fretboard if a non-drying oil is used too often. I’ve switched to heating up beeswax and buffing it into the board; solid at room temp but can be reapplied or removed with some more gentle heat and no chemicals. you could also add dyes to darken the board if you wanted

The trick is to always have a p bass and get something else on top of it. Nothing will ever surpass the p from a musical point of view, its unmatched.
Sure you can get a dickenkacker or a $12k Fodera but you will always find yourself wokjng around the instrument to make it fit in instead of letting the p bass do it by default.

Whats the deal with guitar players always crying about a couple of lbs of weight as if they were carrying cannon balls around.

Seen people so often rturn instruments they loved because it was 9.4 lbs instead of 8.7lbs as if their back could not handle the weight. Meanwhile most have 50lbs of beer belly hanging under nipples and that seems just fine.

common misconception
https://www.woodworkersjournal.com/old-growth-timber-2/
>>
>>129632774
It's just the wood, high grade maple that has actually grown properly is much heavier and denser and durable than the cheap shit from plantations that has grownnfor a fraction of the time. Drum sticks are the best example of this, go into a music store and compare the cheap 3 dollar ones to the hand selected 14 dollar branded ones, both are made out of the same wood but you'll feel the diffefence.

Then there's exotic woods like koa, bubinga, ovankol etc. which are more dense by nature and weigh a lot. Then there's the components which are mostly heavier as the price rises, bridges, binding, stainless steel frets instead of ssome cheap scrap metal, layers upon layers of paint and laquer etc.
The only thing that seems to get lighter the more it costs it seems are tuners.

You can see for yourself next time you're in a guitar store, unless its some specifically light weight stuff like a Parker or Kiesel the really expensive shit is most likely gonna weigh a ton.

My biggest level up when learning ear training was to trust my instincts more. Often, I’d be like, wait is that a 6th? >lemme check
wrong, fug :DDD

When you get it wrong, try to nail it in the second try FROM the wrong note you just chose. That’s like a 2nd type of ear training where you may drop a note in a chord progression, only to have to fix it. So you can use this “fix” and see how off you are in real-time

>learning bass on a 5 string
>feel like I should learn on a 4 string since I don't really use the B string
Should I just buy a 4 string and maybe sell the one I've been playing? I actually have been getting into some metal/metalcore lately but I still don't see myself using the B string much. Would it be hard to transition?

no if anything it should be easier. you should just be better at muting from playing a 5 string

I'd suggest keeping it and buy another 4 strings, you might rarely use it but once you do need it for something it's extremely annoying to adapt a 5 strings part for a 4 strings

5 string: gay <-(YOU) are here
6 string: cool

Are you a church black? If not, immediately put the fucking 5 string down and get a regular 4 string.
Gospel niggas don't need 5 strings either, but it keeps them from selling drugs and shooting each other, so it's fine enough. A white man, on the other hand, has no excuses for owning one.

They work well for quick and ez string changes without worrying about knots and loops on the post. Don't think they're that critical for locking down staying in tune, it just eliminates one of those factors - too much winding or slipping strings on the posts.

melodic is better

Think about the intervals of the chords. C is a minor third over A. Just because they are natural notes doesn't mean it's a major interval.

If you can't string a guitar properly because you're retardo, then this might help you. Real men take pride in stringing their guitars properly. It's like cutting their lawn like a putting green. You can tell just at a glance how serious to take someone just by looking at their string winds.

>B is always too damn floppy
this should not be the case, just get a bigger gauge?
my b strings are tight as fuck and I have 34 and 35 inch scale basses.

I don't have any weird gauges either, just the standard D'addario 6 string string set for bass.

You don't need a multiscale for a b string, that shit is only useful if you down tune because then it will be floppy but anything below A# sounds like a fart anyways and is just purely a meme. Reminder that Fodera, Warwick, Ken Smith and all the other big premium bass builders don't do any multiscale meme shit.

That's just Dingwall and Kiesel marketing to sell their atrocious looking monstrosities.

why not get something with humbuckers? you're distorting the shit out of your bass with pedals already, might as well get a pickup that's suitable for that style?
That tinny jazz pickup on a PJ won't be much of a solution.
I'd keep the current P and just get a 2nd cheaper bass that covers all fields (humbuckers, ideally splittable to single coil to get the same as a PJ, 24 frets, active/passive switch, slim neck etc.)
You can get all this for under 400 bucks without having to sacrifice your precision bass.
The Jackson in pic related is even 35 inch for greater sustain.

If you get a PJ you'll just eventually either keep it in P mode which will mean you didn't change anything or you'll have an inferior jazz bass since the tinny bridge single coil is only suitable for quacky nasally lead stuff like Jaco Pastorius.

Absolutely. Never listen to the cargo cult.

Locking tuners are one of those upgrades that punch well above their price point. Here's what they actually do for you:

**Tuning Stability**
The main draw — locking tuners clamp the string at the post, eliminating the need for multiple winds. Fewer winds means less string slippage under tension changes, which translates directly to better pitch retention after bends, whammy use, or even just aggressive picking.

**String Changes**
This is underrated. You cut the string, feed it through, lock it, and you're done. No wrapping, no counting turns. A full restring can go from 20 minutes down to 5-7. On a guitar you restring often (or mid-gig), that matters.

**Less String Stretch-In Time**
With traditional tuners, part of the break-in period is waiting for the extra winds to seat and compress. Locking tuners skip that — strings come up to stable pitch much faster after a change.

**Tremolo Performance**
This is where they really shine. If you're running a Strat trem or anything non-locking (like your Thinline build with the Strat route), locking tuners at the headstock work with your string trees and nut to form a more complete stability system. You won't get Floyd Rose-level return, but it's a meaningful improvement over standard tuners.

**Weight Reduction (sometimes)**
Depending on the brand, locking tuners can actually be lighter than chunky vintage-style tuners, which can slightly improve headstock resonance and balance — though this is subtle.

**Things to keep in mind:**
- They don't fully compensate for a worn or poorly cut nut — that's still the biggest single point of tuning failure
- On a hardtail or fixed-bridge guitar, the benefit is real but more modest than on a floating trem
- String gauge matters: the clamping mechanism needs to grip firmly, and some cheaper locking tuners struggle with very thin strings

I have no real preference for neck but I guess I need a humbucker pickup for distortion after reading the another anons post. I am still learning about what kinda pickups are good for the music i want to make. I think the store i go to has stingrays so I'll check out those.

>>129635497
Thanks for the info about the pickups. I'm still learning so I wouldn't have known that I was basically wasting my money. I'm going to see if the store i go to has any humbucker pickup basses. This makes me think I should probably have a guitar with humbucker pickups too.

Keeping the P-bass is never a bad idea. Every bassist should own a presicion bass but a precision bass should not be your only bass.
If you got the money you can get absolute gems like that Jackson I posted for about as much as one fancy pedal to see if you like anything about that type of basses, hence why I suggested you get something that comes with all the bells and whistles like 24 frets, coil splitting, passive/active etc.

The guy from LowEndUniversity owns a fully modded custom shop Warwick which goes for like 13 grand and still mostly plays the five string version of that Jackson in his videos, and no, he is not affiliated.

>wasting my money
While I do suggest you keep your precision bass, if you really want to try out something that might be superior:
Spector just launched their bolt-on series a few months ago. They go for roughly 900-1000 bucks new. While Leo Fender did hit the target straight away with the invention of the precision bass, Stuart Spectors invention of reversing the p-pickup to get more low-end and claritiy out of it was the first (and imo only) improvement to the precision bass.
Their four strings are essentially PJ basses, but since they have active aguilar electronics and the Spector tone pump these will be faaaaaaar from tinny and shrill like a Fender.
Or you can get the 5 string version for Aguilar humbuckers which would suit all your distortion much much better.
This would be the only bass that I personally would replace a perfectly fine Fender precision bass with (at least at that price point).
