Why were the rest of the who too retarded to get Pete’s idea?
>>

it was a retarded idea and concept albums are almost always shit

I think it was less a problem of his mates not getting it and more a problem of their audience not getting it. It was a concept that had deep personal resonance for Pete, but as a structured record was never going to click together in that beautiful big-picture way that it must've seemed in his head. Besides, when they tried that experimental live-in concert thing the crowd mostly just wanted to hear the hits.

I know there was a recent super deluxe boxset of Who's Next which included a lot of the Lifehouse outtakes/demos. But did it actually reconstruct the album properly?

Maybe. But they were willing to go along with them because he was their main songwriter.

So it was the audience who were retarded?
