Is blow and heroin more commonly abused in jazz than other genres?

It has more to do with being in the entertainment field in a setting that's a late-nite party setting (nightclubs) yet always having to be ready to go to do 3 or more 1-hour sets a night.

Makes sense. I got shitfaced at a party I where I was supposed to make pizza for like 15 people but a few lines made me able to do it easily, shit definitely works really well.

Until the 50s, drug abuse was worse among jazz musicians than it ever was among rock musicians.

You'd think someone like Bill Evans was a clean-living, wholesome white intellectual, by the character of their music, but he was so badly heroin addicted that he had to shoot up backstage at every concert or else he was physically unable to play. Some like Miles and Coltrane managed to break it, but their health and lifespan was still affected by it.

and cf. Billie Holiday and Anita O'Day

I don't know how O'Day lived to 86 with her lifestyle, it shouldn't have been possible.

Wes Montgomery dropped in his 40s from being on the road constantly and getting 4 hours of sleep a night.

how healthy do you think a guy who lived to 51 could have been anyway?
