It sounds like 'shit' because our ears are tuned to perceive the electric bass to sound like Fender basses, specifically precision basses. And that has nothing to do with the tonewood or whatever, but with pickup position and to a much lesser degree their outputs and types. The SG bass/EB have a treble pickup that can somewhat sound like a Jazz bass with bridge soloed but the neck pickup is so far up that what it picks up is a really muffled low end. Personally, I think that can sound alright in some settings, and both blended is alright. People need to make the sound their own. Force it. Jack Bruce managed to make it iconic. Issues like ergonomics and neck dive are really just an issue if you are really old or have horrible technique.
