electric guitars are basically theremins with frets

I guess they are unnecessary if you spend your entire life within 10 feet of an outlet

Electric guitars are more limited instruments than a lot of electric players realize. They are very basic at monophonic (one note at a time, i.e. lead) playing compared to a bowed/fretless/classical instrument. You have no control over the bloom and swell of the note, and the tuning in fourths plus an odd major third is all built around chords and is not as good for melodies as say a cello or mandolin, on which the strings are tuned with more notes between each string which gives you more notes under your fingers for melody. Tube amp 'sag,' overtones from distortion, amp tone debates, delay pedals, etc. are all ultimately attempts to replicate the depth of sound and overtones of an acoustic instrument. The tuning being unsuited for melody but suited to chords is why so many guitar players cannot play a major scale if asked, and get stuck in pentatonic-box purgatory because they're trying to force an instrument that inherently wants to be polyphonic and play chords into a monophonic one. Playing with distortion also makes guitar intervals other than a fifth sound bad, which is why you play 'power chords' (root and fifth) on electric instead of full major/minor/seventh/etc. So now you're playing an instrument that is limited monophonically but you're also limiting its polyphonic potential, which is what it was built around in the first place. The acoustic knows what it wants to be, which is a polyphonic instrument that is really good at fingerstyle, chords, harmony, etc. It has fewer tricks but the tricks it does have are timeless and less limited.

Because it depends on the genre. Even Yngwie plays acoustic for some of his songs.

Sometimes you just want natural sonical sound waves.
