>OMG I would have been so epin listening to Cocteau Twins and Swans and MBV! I was born too late...
No. These artists existed but were so niche on indie labels you almost definitely would never have heard of them, let alone found their records. Same way you do not know anyone on Bandcamp now. At least now you can find their music easily online and not have to keep changing a vinyl record.
If you lived in the 80s this is the type of music you actually would have been exposed to and listened to:

I do know people on bandcamp thougheverbeit. And that's exactly why I'm happy I wasn't born in the 80s

As a third worlder i'm acutely aware of this fact. Internet just made finding shit easier and not being tied to whatever radio slop is trending at the moment
>>
>>129664194
Same if you'd been around in the 50s.

>Yeah I would have been so hip I would have been listening to Howlin' Wolf in 1955 I totally wouldn't have the Four Lads on at my house party honest

on that note, Dave Marsh published his guide to 50s-60s R&R and R&B records in '87. a great and informative book but there was almost no chance you'd ever be able to hear most of the records in there.

Cocteau Twins went major label since BBN, they were not an obscure band the way Swans were.
>>
>>129664321
Swans should have stayed obscure
>>
>>129664321
it's like Butthole Surfers. sure you could hear them playing at the mall in '96 but what was your likelihood of hearing the Rembrandt Pussyhorse era band? not very.

i would have been a metal head in the 80s, metal heads were eating good.

You know they used to have these things called Radio Stations where they would play music different genres on. You could turn knobs on a machine and change the tuning to different broadcast frequencies so you could hear different stations playing different types of music, and talk radio as well which is like what podcasts are now.

All for free, no subscription.

By far the best era of music was 2001 to 2006, if I could travel back in time this is the era I'd choose, so many in their prime, along with great legacy acts still around...

You just HAD to bring up the 50s!

This is a troll, right?

Before anyone says they had advertising you can easily turn it down and talk about the music with your friends during these times.
>>
I mean, I never heard of Joanna Newsom in the 00s either. If it wasn't on a VH1 countdown I didn't know it existed.

Quit being a smart cunt, there were between 0 and 2 stations in your area at one time where the douchebag choosing music in between rants about his failure to get laid actually had something interesting and new to play
And most of the time he didn't even tell you the name of the album so if you really wanted to know you had to phone the station and ask and maybe you'd get the answer then

Here's your house party record in '55, sucker. Not the Charms or Moonglows.

The bands in this picture were all fairly popular. My parents and most of their friends know these albums. My dad had all of them in his collection, except maybe JAMC. Back then if you were interested in music, you bought mags or weeklies and read about new bands/releases. The only tricky part might be actually getting records if they were still import-only, you'd need a good local record store.

What would actually be hard is finding obscure punk and metal bands in the 80s. You'd have to know people in the scene, write letters, trade tapes etc. Nowadays, it's a trivial matter to queue up rare demos on YT.

Those are major label bands most on MTV there was nothing "obscure" about them compared to the real underground stuff like hardcore punk or Swans.
>>
Nope. Almost all those bands were very well known and firmly in the mainstream. They had charting singles so you'd see them on TV and hear them on the radio. I know because I’m old and was a kid in the 80s. the only one I didn’t know until later years and the internet etc is Devo.

dude, My Bloody Valentine and Cocteau Twins were Top 10 bands in the UK and in other european countries.
Carolyn's Fingers was used in a fucking Honda car commercial:
https://youtu.be/tpS2wDksDDs
comparing them to your average Bandcamp artist is utterly retarded.

I regularly listen to the weekly top 40s on the Sirius 80s station, and enjoy most of what I hear, so I'm gonna say that I would have very much enjoy the 80s. Also tons of great metal was coming out and growing up around it would make me a much bigger fan than I am now. Candy Girl also only hit #46 in the US, but you know what was in the top 10 that week in 1983?

Beat It
Let's Dance
Jeopardy
Overkill
She Blinded Me With Science
Come On Eileen
What a Feeling
Little Red Corvette
Solitaire
Der Kommissar

Those are almost all bangers I really enjoy.
