When I was a shithead teenager who only cared about metal I tried to write riffs every day. They were boring and generic and all of them sucked. At some point, I decided I wanted to write proper songs with melodies and lush chords.After getting good at that, when I tried to write riffs, they were much more musical and memorable. Moral: riffs are just repetitive melodies, write melodies and riffs will follow
