What makes "smells like teen spirit" such an impactful song? It's probably the most revered song ever made where the lyrics are relatively meaningless
What exactly made everyone go crazy for it?

It's tune is nice

Its the first time the pop punk formula actually worked In a pop setting. The riff, the solo, the power chords, speed, aggression, vocal fry. The masses had never been treated to those things on that level
>>
>>129667654
Teens liked how moody it was compared to all the happy sounding glam metal that was popular a few years earlier
>>
>>129667654
That it appealed to teens
>>
>>129667654
And God tier mixing/production, massive low end, sounds powerful compared to the weak radio and glam metal drums

It was fascinating and intriguing to the public. It had intensity and yet was catchy and anthemic. The band esp Kurt looked so average and that also was a nice counterpoint to all the glam shit and elaborate work bands would do to make themselves larger than life. Which is weird because normies always love that kind of shit. But I guess hearing this little man that looks like a mechanic scream and play his guitar in an intense way and get such catchy melodies from him was fascinating. I was only like 8 or 9 years old. I used to watch MTV at a young age and just remember wondering who the hell this weird guy on my TV was.

They were a great live band.
Their songs were simplified Pixies rip-offs.
>>

>simplified Pixies rip-offs
they were a bit more complex than Pixies
and the Wipers influence + Kurt's voice put them on a higher level
>>
>>129667654
its all in the power of the melody, its great pop songwriting first and foremost with even the meaningless attaching itself to the subconscious

>OOOOOHHH
>A HALF WAY THERE
>OOOOHOOOO!
>LIVING ON A PRAYER

>this perfectly produced song featuring impeccable vocals is an example of punk somehow
>>
>>129668054
>Kurt wasn't obsessed with perfect production and didn't layer his vocals.
Try again. Or wait, don't bother.

ffs man its not even sunday morning yet

>meaningless
That's the thing OP: it was about the nihilism which even though it was prevelant throughout the eighties hadn't made its way to the mainstream yet except for a few songs meant for radio that were covered in layers of irony. Kurdt laid it all bare and it resonated with the times. It scratched an itch for authencity that would echo all the way throughout the nineties even when artists riding the bandwagon were fake as fugg.

so what you are saying is the parts of living on a prayer that are not punk are what it has in common with smells like teen spirit and that is why its a good example of successful pop punk?

it was played on heavy rotation on MTV.
simple as.
you're overthinking it.
kids like what they see on TV.
>>
>>129667654
It's hard but sort of mournful.
I still hate it though. The squeaky guitars are grating, the mumbling vocals. Mumble grunge, can we call it that?
Most songs on this album fucking stunk too.
>>
he stole the riff from smashing pumpkins
>>
What’s the point of listening to Nirvana when Alice In Chains did everything that Nirvana did but better?
