John said he used cocaine a bit during Sgt Pepper and then some more in the 70s, but apparently wasn't that big on it, but he used heroin pretty heavily in the late 60s in addition to weed and LSD, habits he picked up in late 1964-1966. Debra Sharon Davis has a book called Backstage Pass VIP features information she gathered from interviews with Harry Nilsson, who was close with John, that puts more emphasis on John's cycle of binging and purging. Harry recounted that John loved to eat, but hated feeling full, so he'd throw up when he was done eating big bowls of ice cream and such. It's true that the heroin probably didn't help, as weight loss is one of the biggest signs of heroin abuse, but I don't think it was the primary driver of his weight loss in 1967 since he wouldn't start using it super heavily until 1969, I believe. I agree with you, though. I like him the most when he was a bit meaty between 1965-1966, even if I don't consider him truly fat by contemporary or modern body standards. He had yummy thighs then, but I'm biased because I'm genuinely just an architect.
