A combination of the happy accident of Iommi having to literally invent a new, trademark style of riffing due to his handicap and the choice to make their lyrics horror movie themed. Imagine all those epic riffs like War Pigs, Snowblind but with lyrics about falling in love or chasing birds. It never would have worked. So there was a perfect storm of these 2 necessary qualities that no one could have predicted.
