How hard is creating a bass line if you're okay with guitar? Not even talking about playing bass but creating a line in like a DAW
>>
>>129696059
depends on the song. they can be quite simple and formulaic but there has to be a lot going on inside the song. there’s a mathematic formula for making a solid line but nothing i would consider really good
>>
>>129696059
easy, just four beats of root note per measure like 99% of what bassists do.
>>
>>129696059
Latency is a bitch for basslines because of the lower frequencies and the physics of sound. So trying to play it in time is best served by quantization. I have an okay set up and it’s frustrating having to drag a bassline into certain spots due to latency. You can always adjust it later for feel (ie. add swing), but getting the shit down is usually had the battle.

Try programming vs playing this bassline (at :51):

Your ear perceives lower frequencies with a delay. Lower frequencies have a ramp up time to be perceived. So if you’re coming up with a bassline, you need to account for that.

A delay of 10ms. You can’t physically account for a delay of 10ms with your playstyle and editing the audio to account for it is retarded. No one puts the kick 10ms ahead of the downbeat lol
>>
>>129694534
I like the lacquered necks tho, wish more manufacturers did this as another option at least
Anyway they started releasing guitars without neck finish a while back
>>
>>129696511
That’s why I said that COMBINED with latency.

>>129696511

>>
>>129696575

>>
>>129696511
>>129696575
I am curious as to what you mean by this exactly tho. and fwiw a lot of bassists will have the producer pull their bass back because playing slightly behind the drums makes them sound bigger
>>
>>129694817
Yeah, itll surely take way less time if you drop it off at a shop for a few days, rather than watching a video for a few minutes and turning some screws
>>
>>129696607
well when I had a scarlet 2i2 I know I could feel 8ms when recording but no I don’t have a reference
>>
https://voca.ro/11PI5xBrn1F7
>>
>>129696628
You could not feel 8ms you lying sack of dog shit, empirically test it and cry when you fail miserably.
>>
>>129696642
feeling is different than hearing. when you plug direct into an amp for 3 years you have an expectation of what the response feels like
>>
I recorded with 150ms delay because my PC couldn't handle the plugins
>>
>>129696628
Feeling it and playing it are two different things you are not that tight. Look at where your notes fall on a grid between two different takes lol

>>129696613
I’ve been writing and recording baselines for a decade and never done this. Not saying it doesn’t happen but lots electronic dance music for example is built around tightly gridded basslines
>>
I can feel 1ms
>>
>>129696664
I’m not saying it’s always less than 10ms but you can definitely hear 20ms so wouldn’t you subconsciously be compensating to push the bass forward in time to not hear that, so in I way you would be compensating with your playing
>>
My scarlet has 3.7ms latency, but I am closer to the speakers so the effective latency is the same.
10 feet from your amp speaker is 8ms of latency.
>>
>>129696664
Gonna expand I’m not saying people don’t play ahead behind the beat whatever that happens but specifically autistically moving all of your recording bass notes 10ms ahead to account for the minuscule delay of the brains processing of bass frequencies is the most autistic shit I’ve ever heard in my life. How do you think people play live?
>>

how the FUCK do I do pinch harmonics?
>>
>>129697140
You pinch
>>
>>129697140
After you pick the string you immediately slightly dampen the string with the left side of your thumb
>>
>>129697157
This is the wrong to explain it, it's a single motion not two separate ones, you pick it in a way that the string catches on your thumb a little bit on the way down
>>
>>129697140
A little.piece of thumb meat hits the string while you pick. Also it's way easier on certain spots on the string. Also makes different notes. Try closer to the bridge ir neck while you do it. You need to find the right spot
>>
>>129697140
your thumb can already be on the string but because you use a pick it’s just harder to physically do that way but you definitely need to be in the right spot like >>129697198 says. where the middle pickup is or would be is a good place to start
>>
>>129697213

>>
>>129697250
Could be 10 min could be never, it's one of those things that is pretty simple once you get it but you DO have to get it right at least once
>>
>>129697250
can you do natural harmonics? it’s the same thing but imagine the string is now shorter because it is because you fretted something.
>>
>>129697295

Simples. The one thing Bias FX2 had going for it, was the tone match feature. It could actually approximate the sound of a bass while using a guitar input. I enjoyed it quite, but it's not as good as virtual bass instruments (EZBass sounds the best, but MODO Bass offers the most customization and control).

can i get some feedback on everything about this? its supposed to be a bass solo over a backing track for my class; first time using a DI and a DAW. idk why the volume levels on the track look so significantly different but it seems reasonably balanced to me when i listen to it on an external device

Use key words righty, lefty, support, package in your search term. It will help you bring up the correct PDF. Lefty is only good for left handed users so it's the exact same book just aimed at lefties. Spend some time and print the thing out. Figure out which colored pages are suitable for colored printing. You can get away with black and white for most everything but some pages are meant for color. Take those pages to Staples or what have you and get it all done right. This is a lifetime investment course for a binder on your shelf. You will use it often, forever. Don't cheap out.

I called over the phone to the place I went to last year. They had my info on file so im guessing that's why they didn't ask what I wanted to work on. My goal is still the same I guess, knowing the fundamentals and being able to play chords. Just like with bass right now I guess my goal is being able to read and play tabs. I'm working on reading notation as well for both in my free time. Tabs are a fun way to learn but I just cant keep up with some songs on guitar that I already play on bass fine. So there's a good amount of things I want to work on and get better at.
>>
>>129701064
I like that fretboard chart myself as it lists the notes as seen with musical notation (how they appear on the G staff) so you can begin to sort out where the notes live on the guitar. It helps when you're learning through the beginner guitar method books from Hal Leonard, MelBay, Alfred and the like. It kind of unlocks everything in my mind...

You get the pdf for 20. I had to buy the binder and pay to print out the slide rule and the fretboard chart on cardstock. But the binder was like 10 bucks and the printing was like 10 bucks. You also need an x-acto knife to cut out the holes for the slide rule, and some scotch tape, but I had that already.

Not if you don't count shitters are guitarists. There are millions of adult men who can play 'Heart and Soul' or 'Chopsticks' on a piano, but they don't make it their identity and call themselves pianists. Guitar is different. Every adult man, however shit at guitar that can play the intro to Stairway considers themselves a real musician. It's very strange. These guys make us all look bad. These guys are also the people who make comments about shredding having no soul and their retard takes about guitar gear drown out the real player, muddying the waters making the general consensus on guitar related matters such as what is good gear completely incorrect
>>
90% of so called "guitarists" drop the instrument in a year, but the top 10% still includes millions of people

Music is written for piano mostly, guitarists know it's written an octave higher or they should. They would be taught that if they were actually using a professional teacher and not online stuff in random order or self taught stuff. Not every book even tells you this outright either. Scotty West tells it to you in his videos. There is an excellent book if you can find it called:

Fretboard Logic SE: The Reasoning Behind the Guitar's Unique Tuning + Chords Scales and Arpeggios Complete

https://equipboard.com/items/fretboard-logic-se-the-reasoning-behind-the-guitar-s-unique-tuning-chords-scales-and-arpeggios-complete

And it goes into great depth.

Anyhow, I don't have the time or patience to explain this concept further right now. There are lots of videos on YouTube that try and explain it. It's not an easy one or two word answer. It takes research. So go do it. I've helped enough. Good luck.

the thing i mostly have a problem with is omitting the little 8 beneath the treble clef to denote it's an octave lower. when you omit it, you're creating unnecessary ambiguity that is only clear to people who exclusively read music written for guitar
