Wrong. But it's a good genre.

Correct.

Overall it’s a B tier genre but at its peak it can be the greatest music ever

Jazz is superior to jazz fusion, except for jazz flamenco which is literally peak music.

What was the name of that prog rock band from the 70's whose covers had a naked fat guy on them? I don't want to look up the covers, but some of their songs seemed interesting.

Classical is the Crown's Jewel of music

Jazz Fusion is Jazz but less limited it implements a lot of electric instruments and even synths which is something regular Jazz doesnt do. Get with the times Unc. Which means the late 60s
music evolved a lot in that period.
>>
>>129697994
I understand that the idea of electric or fusion jazz is superior to jazz at first. However, if you compare regular jazz's greatest artists and recordings with most of the jazz fusion's output, you'll most likely appreciate the difference.

Why were 80s-90s punk/grudge bands so revolted about "turning into prog rock"?
>>
>>129698199
Because "punk"fags are retarded

Man who doesn't listen to progressive rock, classical or jazz music on the internet:
>shitty cope genre for people who can't into classical or jazz
>>
>>129698199
because they couldn't keep up with the skill level increasing in Punk. They wanted to keep Punk easy and retarded for doo-doo brains.

You always hear those fags that say
>bro learning theory will make you worse at comping up with music actually
yeah those kinda fags were those Punk fags that complained back then
>>
>>129698199
>punks hated prog rock
This is mostly a myth made up by music journalists in the 1980s since it's their job to create brands and push culture wars since it drives brand loyalty and sales. There's more instances of classic punk bands praising progressive rock than dunking on it, and progressive rock bands didn't really talk about punk rock much at all.

The punk bands that did hate prog were the ones that were, ironically, chasing the 'trend' of punk.
>>
>>129697253
You can make a case that death metal even in its most vanilla form was progressive (there's fucking morbid angel songs written with sonata form in the 1980s) but black metal wasn't progressive at all and the genre specifically had to wait for bands like emperor or sigh to infuse it with prog
>>
>>129698264
Kurt Cobain said that he didn't want Nirvana to turn "prog rock" and I recall Thurston Moore getting annoyed at a journalist comparing SY to prog rock bands. It was definitely a thing like those musicians thought it was lame
>>
>>129698282
Wow, if two of the most totally organic and definitely not corporate plant "punks" said prog was bad, then it must be

I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock.Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and Against All Odds. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist.
>>
>>129698341
Dude just enjoy the variety of instruments and where the sound is leading, the build ups the crescendos and changes in time signatures and so on lol. Enjoy the concept of a song within a song because that's basically what it is.

You have to be in a mood for prog rock though, so its understandable, and you gotta have time to listen to a longer than average song.
>>
>>129698317
I mean, if you didn't ike MDK, KA, or Ementehht-re, then Magma probably aren't for you.

>I recall Thurston Moore getting annoyed at a journalist comparing SY to prog rock bands
That doesn't mean anything.
Jethro Tull are a progressive rock classic, but didn't like being called "prog" because the term "prog" was generally associated with the worst of progressive rock's excesses, at least to Ian Anderson who didn't want to be pigeonholed.
Magma are a progressive rock classic, but they never even considered themselves a progressive rock group or were even closely tied to the scene, jokingly calling themselves a post-punk band at one point even.
>>
>>129698895
>jokingly calling themselves a post-punk band at one point even.
jokingly saying they were closer to post-punk than progressive rock***
>>
>>129698895
I wonder if that's what happened to This Heat too. They are often classified as post-punk but they sound like prog rock to me

jazz is about tonality and rhythm, not muh electric timbres you rock kiddie
>>129700041
nta but a lot of people start with pic related. if you like it, also check out Paco de Lucía and Jorge Pardo. and don't use retarded tourist sites like progarchives to look up jazz subgenres like this, those retards have no idea what they're talking about when it comes to jazz bands that aren't soft machine or mahavishnu
>>
>>129700437
and not really flamenco related at all but a lot of fans of jazz flamenco also tend to really like brazillian jazz guitarists, so maybe consider checking out egberto gismonti, lula galvao, guinga, etc.

thanks, anon
I'll start with that and hopefully we can get some other recs

Your last resort is to listen to them live. Try out pic related. If that still isn't for you, then you're simply eternally filtered, nothing wrong with that. If you like jazz then you might be interested in hearing about all of the Max Roach and McCoy Tyner influences, but otherwise I'd just move on.

Classical and jazz lean heavily on brass (the worst timbre of any instruments) while prog rock is built around guitars, easily the best sound there is. That said, I’d put Renaissance and medieval music up there too.

Johnny Rotten talked about being a huge fan of Can in an interview one time and then Malcom McClaren told him not to say that anymore.
