>Lollipop was originally written and recorded by rock-and-roll duet Ronald and Ruby (Ruby being songwriter Beverly Ross) and released on RCA. However, as they were a mixed race duo the label could not release any publicity photos of them nor could they make any public appearances together. The record didn't go very far because of that and RCA's non-success promoting rock-and-roll acts other than Elvis.>The Chordettes covered the record and it went to #2 in February '58, their second biggest-ever hit. Lead vocalist Janet Ertel reportedly queried her daughter (soon to be the wife of Phil Everly) and her friends if they liked the song and wanted them to cover it. She affirmed.>Shortly afterwards, Beverly Ross was signed to Columbia as a solo artist but her career quickly bombed in part due to her abrasive personality, and after one disc that flopped she was cut from the label. Some have suggested that this bad experience contributed to souring Columbia A&R head Mitch Miller on rock-and-roll.

>>129712515>>129712677The winter of 58 had the last big burst of rock-and-roll hits before it started to wind down by springtime. There was "Sweet Little Sixteen", "At The Hop", "Lollipop", "Sugartime", "Good Golly Miss Molly." "Johnny B. Goode" came out in April and then that was kind of it.
I never quite lumped the Chordettes with all the housewife pop slop because they always seemed a little too saucy for that.
