The 2016 election permanently mindbroke basically everyone who was connected to musical culture be it musician fan or critic.

Old /mu/ was such a blast. I really do miss it.

Old /mu/ was trash but it was ours.
https://desuarchive.org/mu/thread/129461750/

The nostalgia /mu/tants have for 2010s /mu/ is hilarious because it's one of the few times they could leverage their taste for credibility and notoriety. Whenever you see them wax about the good ol' days, know it's bullshit. They just want the perceived power and prestige.

I tripfagged here probably like ~15 years ago now or so when Gears and Climaxia were around and probably loads of others I forget now. Were good times. I still come here every so often and casually browse.

hot take: old /mu/ was worse than the current dead /mu/
from the info that we have, it seemed to be a pitch fork echo chamber
>>
>>129792022
I was here for the gears days circa 2007, it was so good back then discovering new music and all the board drama
>>
>>129792101
>, it seemed to be a pitch fork echo chamber
it still had the same retarded 'indie privilege' shills like we do today
it's just that the rest of the userbase was actually interested in finding and enjoying music, now you just have shitposters and retards who take shitpost bait seriously
>>
>>129788552
I miss the MS paint memes like hmmm today I will
>>
>>129792140
>the rest of the userbase was actually interested in finding and enjoying music
what did you guys think about rap back then?
was it popular?
>>
>>129792180
>popular?
retarded sentiment to have for an anonymous website.
you're always gonna have a vocal majority for something as widespread as rap was.
every thread would probably have people shitting on it too so, yknow, it's kinda unquantifiable
>>
>>129792180
it wasn't popular per se and people would still talk shit about it, but it was still a regular topic and threads could actually exist without
>rap more like crap huehuehue
>not music
being spammed ad nauseam
there was usually more favoritism for backpack rap though (madvillain was pure /mu/core; doom, aesop rock, atmosphere, that sorta shit)
>>
Can't believe ive been here 16 years.

maybe old /mu/ wasnt that bad...
>>
>>129792206
if like/dislike of rap music makes/breaks this board for you, you're a child just looking to release your anger on the internet and not a real person.
im not supporting rap music, just calling out you peoples obsession over it.
listen to what you want. learn about it. enjoy it. try to spread it to others if you feel it's truly worth it.
fuck this retarded image contest and lack of creative and critical thinking

>>129792382
Take off your nostalgia goggles for one fucking second. Even at its peak, /mu/ was little more than a refuge for the antisocial to flex their tastes and signal over the rest.

i dont even think its just that. a bunch of it is the worldcorp bullshit ARG and the deep internet stuff that the spoopy yt channels talked about that gave /mu/ in particular some of its userbase
a LOT of people are here because of youtube videos and it shows

Anon, that's been 4chan since as long as I can remember. Even in 2010 everyone was complaining about newfags and the proliferation of normalfags on the internet do to the rise of tumblr/facebook/myspace. That part hasn't changed. And we were right by the way. The proliferation of social media has killed internet culture, it's not just 4chan, it's all the old websites that have lost their culture, now everything is just pepe and wojak and twitter screenshots for ragebait It's not just the /pol/fags that killed internet culture, it was also the Tankies, it was all the retards that turned the internet into a culture war battleground.
>>
Older /mu/ was undeniably better, but not the cursed 2010s bullshit. Everything after 2009 has been a shitshow.

>>129798833
This.
>>129798839
Untrue.
>>
>>129798879
Pretty much this. Libtards and leftoids carry as much of the blame as /pol/tards do yet they cry three times as loud.
>>
>>129798886
I maintain 2011-2013 /mu/ was absolute dogshit if you were into Metal or Hardcore. Sure, if you were some nu-male who cried in his pillow to NMH, AJJ or Sufjan Stevens or flexed his so-totally-not-like-the-other-guys listening habits over the imagined plebs, this place was heaven. To anyone else, it was a cesspit of empty posturing where critical discussion of music was incidental.
>>
>>129798897
God imagine how good it would have been when you actually had to crate dig to find records too.

Now none of it means anything and nobody cares.
>>
>>129798879
>that's been 4chan since as long as I can remember
this is true but those people were often the minority. no longer the case anymore. also there's barely any moderation on this board (except when you complain about the moderation then they magically appear to delete your thread) which only makes the situation worse. when there's no one around to pick up the trash, it encourages bad actors to litter even more.
>>
>>129798888
Libtards and leftoids have colonized essentially every website. /mu/ only seems overrun by /pol/tards by comparison when it's actually the only place left with diverse perspectives.

It’s true.

There was a time that an unwashed dweeb could wield his taste in boom bap hip hop, nepobaby experimental folk, math rock, technical midwest emo, and reverb-drenched shoegaze over the plebeian masses like a shining sword of legend. He amazed normies and old heads alike with his eclectic taste. He was known as a man of culture. A music nerd.

At work he was a savior. On roadtrips, he was a DJ. At parties he was akin to a god.

But all along he kept a secret weapon: a Nepalese basket weaving message board. He thought it would last forever. An infinite well of taste. A gateway to prestige. An endless spring of new identities.

A threat came by the name of Pandora, but the normies knew that it was no match for our hero; the algorithm repeated itself and made tasteless associations.

But then Spotify came along and it was all over in a fortnight; every Chad and Stacy suddenly had his power. He could no longer hide behind the gatekept taste of an online nest of NEETs playing culture vulture…

sad but true. Never forget.

>>129798960

Old /mu/ just wanted you to challenge yourself and strive for greater heights emotionally and intellectually, to carve your own path in becoming a more informed and experienced human being and listener. Did we take the bantz too far? No quite frankly and if youre still upset about it that says more about you and your own personal inadequacies than it does about the oldfags who trolled you

>2007-2015
Weird LARP of a question since the 2007-2009ish crowd was extremely different from the 2010-2015 crowd, 2007 /mu/ was full of weirdos who listened to touhou music and autistic prog rock and metal. Dragonforce was the most posted band on this board.

This. 2011-2013 /mu/ was a very different beast than pre-2010s /mu/. I wasn't fucking around on /mu/ that early, but even a cursory glance at whatever threads were archived reveal a very different board culture. Once NMH and /mu/core got shilled aggressively in 2011 and the gorespammer targeted any/all Doom Metal threads, that's what started the patrician vs. pleb dynamic.

Nu mu is better and I'm fucking sick of pretending otherwise.
For one, it's slower. I like a board that's not too fast.
Two, most of the stupid faggots that truly believed they had "patrician" taste here went on to be music curating YouTubers, Redditors, RYM users, etc. The people most of you all claim to hate (deservedly)

Also I'd like to note most of you should get a bullet in the brain for bitching like this >>129803963
Wow you found a lot of new-to-you things when you first joined, and over the period of over a decade you stopped finding as much new stuff. Do I really need to explain this phenomenon to you? Are you actually that retarded?

Finally, if like me you started browsing /mu/ as a teenager and are now approaching middle age, you should absolutely not act like you did as a teenager. I want to rip my skin off thinking about the way I used to post here. Not growing and maturing (aka being autistic) is not something to be proud of.

There's a handful of posters that are belligerently obnoxious, but those kind of people existed in every era of /mu/
>>
>>129803864
the only pop album that ive ever really talked about on here is steve mcqueen
>>
>>129804226
No, it's not better now. I prefer a slow board and I am glad for clout chasing losers to be gone, but what we have is a pile of shit. Not saying a faster board or 'patrician' users are better, but besides those things in the past there were other good posters. They're not here anymore. The board is worse.

Always amusing to me how so many people can come together to collectively bitch about the state of the board at least once a week, but nobody can ever make threads talking about the things they’re interested in seeing more of, or even posting the so called “high quality discussion” that the bygone era of /mu/ was so highly praised for. Just goes to show how people always want others to do the hard part for them, and never themselves.
>>
>>129798790
This does sum it up. Poptimistm and loser gooners that obsess over waifus and trying to be hip by being annoying virtue signalers have ruined it the most. You even see people talk shit about good hipster indie from the early 10s or 2000s by retard zoomers who think theyre cool because they now listen to wpop
>>
>>129804505
genuinely. everyone's complaining how bad /mu/ posts are, none of them post anything better. they're just consumers bitching about how their well of new music has dried up.
>>
>>129804226
slow boards are nice if the discussion is interesting but current /mu/ is slow and shallow as a puddle
the few threads that get traction are the same stupid discussions that have happened a million times

>>
I wasted years of my youth getting good at tracking down chilean blogspots full of rapidshare links and now it's all meaningless.
>>
It's way better now
Being publicly associated with 4chan has been a social death sentence for a while now and it has essentially forced everyone to truly stay anonymous, the way it was always meant to be.
Good riddance to those who couldn't hack it without their ego.
>>
>>129809370
Posters like you are just as bad as the idiots you describe. They wanted some social cred posting here, and your ilk are obsessed with them being gone, but clearly none of you are here for good reasons. There's no way in hell the board is "way better now" as far as music sharing / discussion is concerned. That's the only thing that should matter here, but obviously not to the worst posters here.

I know.
>>
>>129798548
i'm with you, but I feel like it's just cuz I'm older now. The same old albums get posted everyday and the new stuff people geek out about is shit to me. The only newer stuff I'm excited about is all electronic or ambient/experimental or honestly a small bit of the nu ug rap stuff but people here aren't interested. I feel like if I was 20 and started coming here as a fresh slate I'd be too immersed in the /mu/ charts to care about any of that shit either though

I think music as a medium perhaps just has fewer topics to be discussed than other art forms such as movies.
also the kpop general bumps every thread off the catalog so /mu/ can't peacefully transition to being a slow board

Humans can only stand so much awesome, it's in our genetic code. Dragonforce, for example, taps into the unused portion of our brains and unravels a sixth sense to a new level of awesome that humans cannot normally experiance. When you listen to Dragonforce, you are not only listening to music, you are taking a journey to another place, another world that some can never hope to behold on their own. Like a scout sent into an unknown land, a voyager on a quest for the unknown, like a tribal Shaman on a spiritual journey...all society can hope for is that you bring back a piece of what you now have engraved upon your soul, and help free the repressed souls and minds of all civilization.

And totally fucking rock out.
