Do you remember the shuffle? I'm talking hardstyle/Melbourne shuffling. I bumped into these videos as a teen on Youtube of people doing this and immediately tried to learn doing it. Got pretty decent at it but it was only really a thing in Australia and Malaysia for some reason so I just did it alone in my room.

seems it was one of the last localized, authentic musical subcultures that was also gatekept (by being able to do a dance). i appreciate it for that alone

Those were the days, I remember learning the dances

Forget shuffle -- we had tektonik here, although it only caught on for a semester before everyone collectively pretended it had never happened. Shuffle looked so cool in comparison, but people only danced like this in the rare clubs where the floor was slippery enough, and they were much less impressive than the guys in the Australian videos. Neither did anyone wore bell bottom pants.

At the mall, teens lacking in self awareness would do spastic windmills and jumpstyle kicks while blasting obnoxious hardstyle on their clipping phone speakers, looking absolutely ridiculous. Some dork got bullied out of my high-school when he tried to reinvent himself with a tektonik tee-shirt, and a Saturday afternoon when the trend was dying I remember sitting at a cafe in town and seeing literally everyone jeer at a pack of pic related as they walked down the street.

Holy shit, thanks for reminding me this existed I guess. My instinct is to think it was completely cringe, but then again it's not too different from voguing and new wave dancing which are remembered fondly by comparison.

yeah i learned it with a friend but i was a fat faggot so i looked horrendous doing it but it was pretty fun. would try it again if my knee wasnt fucked

I'm probably a bit north of you and we had pure jumpstyle for the same amount of time. Except that stuff wasn't seen as cringe when it was in and everyone did and could do it.
