>have to pay at least 350 bucks for a good turntable if not more>even more hundreds of dollars to pay for good speakers, receiver and a bunch of other bullshit that has to be replaced>new vinyl albums are $40, old ones are like $25>inconsistent quality among different releases for the same album>owning giant album art is the only upside but also is the most inconvenient when it comes to storing them>have to keep discs constantly spotless for best quality, because it's a giant disc exposed to dust particles in the air>disc is more than likely to degrade over time>can't skip songs, and if you do you have to get a microscope out to count teh grooves or some faggy bullshit>have to flip the disc half way through the run time, if not several times more if it's longer>CDs are not only cheaper but are superior in terms of quality with better dynamic range>can't rip songs on records directly to your computer then transport them to mp3>record collector nerds go through all this and spend thousands of dollars on music because it's part of the experience bro :^) Are vinyl fags actually fucking stupid???
>>129792738Trust fund hobby.
>>129792738I have over $1k worth of vinyl records and have never owned a record player
>>129792738>standard jewel cases are perfect protection and completely replaceable>perfect size to admire album art without being too big>perfect sound quality>very resistent to scratches, robust error correction>can be played millions of times without losing fidelity>lasers are coolCD are perfect
>>129792806>>standard jewel cases are perfect protection and completely replaceableBoth false. Standard jewel cases crack at the hinges and the hub all the time, and all the new ones are flimsy shit compared to the heavy plastic they used in the 80s. Super jewel box cases are a lot better but they don't fit the standard jewel case art. The rest is true.
>>129792806Yep. And it's virtually always once a CDchad, always a CDchad. We never left, even in the no new CDs at all and vinyl = popular again eras.
>>129792738Most vinyl fags are younger millenials who weren't even there when CDs replaced them. It was a HUGE improvement. Nothing was lost when we threw them in the trash.
collecting vinyl is simply a poorfag filter
>>129792872Dre's 2001 was the last cd I bought for like 20 years before going back to my roots and rebuilding my collection. Most of my original cds were lost but my mazzy star and a few others survived.I was amazed out how some discs that were pretty scratched up were perfectly playable and I was able to back up without any errros. Truly an excellent format for the medium.
I think vinyl culture has been affected by online autism that turns it into a performative thing. You don't NEED all that expensive audiophile stuff and most people who were collecting records in the past didn't have it either.Granted, you do get what you pay for in terms of equipment quality but it also shouldn't be a gatekeeping thing. If you are patient you can get a really nice set up at a lawn sale in the summer.Same thing with pressing quality. For sure there are some bad batches of records but for 99% of the population that is fine with streaming they are going to be fine with whatever copy of the album they find.Basically, just ignore the manchildren on youtube who want to feel validated that they have le heckin golden ears that just hear better than you do.also if anyone says>vinylsDiscard their opinion. Vinyl records are like sand or corn. You don't say corns on the cob or the sands on the beach. This is how you know someone just got into the hobby and has zero experience.
>>129792918>This is how you know someone just got into the hobby and has zero experience.I call them vinyls because it's entertaining watching people complain about it.
Choosing vinyls as your music listening medium is like needing a bicycle to get around places but deciding to get one of those penny farthing bikes with the giant wheel from the 1800s
>>129792738it doesnt actually degrade over time. vinyl records cut in the 60s will play just fine 200 years from now if you store them well
>>129792738>new vinyl albums are $40, old ones are like $25I have a decent collection of both old and new stuff and this is honestly the only downside, I tolerate the rest of the inconveniences.I hear the situation is better in America but here everyone threw away their records when CDs became a thing so you can't get any decent flea market deals. I was lucky my dad kept his stuff so I could at least inherit those.Cheapest records I have were around $5 but they're beaten and abused early 70s 3rd world presses no one cares about.
>>129792962I'd do it. Looks pretty cool honestly.
>>129792946You are just proving me correct that your opinion doesn't mean anything.
>>129793068I don't know where you are exactly, but try to find places off the beaten path. Everyone is going to thrift stores for vinyl and cds so they get picked over. You want to look for antique shops, estate sales, people on fb marketplace. Here in leafland we also have these things called Hospice shops - usually run by a church with volunteers. But I've had some really good luck at those.
>>129792864>completely replaceableTrue some are better quality than other but the entire thing can be replaced preserving artwork and disc. And even when the hinges break the disc is still protected.
>>129792738Based CDchad. Vinyl is the Funko pop of music formats. Not a single redeeming thing about that overpriced bullshit.
>>129792738no lies detected. the vinyl hobby is mostly a romanticized larp, and i say this as someone with thousands of dollars in vinyl. cds are simply the superior physical medium and there's a reason they took over
>>129792738i only buy cds, the only thing i prefer vinyl for is the larger artwork of the cover
>>129792738Used to be able to buy good components from goodwill, part together a decent hifi for $100, and the records were always $1. You were born too late, lil nigga
>>129792738>>129792806>>129792872Except no one sells this shit anymore. EVERY music store is 90% vinyl. If you’re lucky, other formats get a tiny rack in the back. Most stores have no CDs at all. Vinyl is the dominant physical format no matter how much it sucks or how expensive it is. I wish things were different.
>>129794177Might be where I'm from but there's lots of CDs again. It's at least 40/60 CD/vinyl in the stores and if it's not in store I can almost always order
>>129794177>buying new musicStart thriftstoremaxxing. I have literally hundreds of used CDs. Dirt cheap and still sound as good as new.
I buy CDs for my car and Vinyl/Tapes for home. I would like a home CD deck though.
>>129794197What about new releases?
>>129792864It cracks because you're a clumsy oaf.
>>129794249I buy FLACs on Bandcamp. If it's not on Bandcamp it's probably not worth listening to.>>129794281They're often already cracked when I buy them used.
>>129792962Not an argument.
>>129794177Walmart literally has an entire CD section and so does every record store I've ever been in
vinyl culture is dead. It is all about thrift shop CDs now as those are actually affordable and worth digging through now since all the good vinyl got plundered already and prices have escalated by fetishistic snobs with inferiority complexes and receding hair lines.
>>129794177Walmart amd amazon sell new cds, but used is better amd cheaper. Most new condition cds are remasters that suck. And there is very little new music worth buying.
>>129794197>Start thriftstoremaxxing.>>129794677>It is all about thrift shop CDsnothing but junk in thrift stores. its 98% junk like celine dion, sheryl crow, adult contemporary engelbert humperdink & harry connick jr with some new age enya and kenny g always there. tons of christmas albums year round too. you will never find anything you actually want at goodwill or any thrift store ever. those stores never have any metal, or rap or anything isnt pure garbage. also the cds are usually always scratched to hell and filthy
>>129792738It must be awful being poor
>>129794926You might as well just kys xister.
>>129794988i would love for some thrift store collectors to actually tell us what gems they have found there
>>129794926You need to buy CDs you don't recognize. I discovered Luther Vandross and Anita Baker this way. Top-tier singers I'd never heard before. Also lots of great classical recordings, including obscure stuff.
>>129794926A lot of record stores have them cheap. Do you have places like Game Exchange and whatnot? I've found a lot of gold in places like that. There is a lot of trash at Goodwill but you kinda have to prepare for it to be shit when you go in. Sometimes you get lucky.
>>129792738Yeah and then you pay out your ass for a new cartridge
>>129795159>You need to buy CDs you don't recognize.>Top-tier singers I'd never heard before. nah, its all junk. like i said its all women music because only women throw away/donate music. the only decent musician at goodwill is sarah mclachlan. you can find all her albums cheap but most of the time they are trashed>Also lots of great classical recordings, including obscure stuff.all junk. come on and be honest you dont really want that junk. its just nothing else is there so you feel like you might as well take a chance and buy something>>129795336>There is a lot of trash at Goodwill but you kinda have to prepare for it to be shit when you go inno other stores around. only thrifts and they are terrible. no real collector is finding good stuff there on a regular basis
>>129795466Makes me feel kinda blessed. I see other people's hauls and feel like my collecting journeys are hopeless. Hope some more open up around you and you can find some shit you like, anon.
>>129795084You have to have an open mind to find gold there. If you go in expecting to find Norwegian death metal you are going to be let down. But if you are open to trying new stuff, you might be surprised. My last few finds were Sam Cooke - Live in Harlem (cassette), Quincy Jones - Back on the Block (CD -this was total shit), Bill Evans - We Will Meet Again (Lp) and Motorhead - Ace of Spades (cd)The last hip hop cds I found were Fu-Schnickens and Supreme Clientele but that was last summer.
>>129795526That Sam Cooke album fucking rips
>>129792738Thousands of LPs have never been issued on CD (this is particularly true for underground '80s Metal and Punk, my areas of interest) and existing rips floating around online are horrible because people still don't know how to properly digitize their collections. The other problem related to this is bands not knowing how to properly master their own recordings on reissues. I can't tell you how many times I've come across lossy masters on officially reissued albums. Ergo, the only way to find a proper master is to track down these original issues which are usually on vinyl.Anyway, I've got an AudioTechnica. From what I'm told, the best way to get the most out of an AudioTechnica is to mod it. An anon told me to remove the built-in preamp and install o rings on the tone arm, replace the stock cartridge with Nagaoka MP 110, and fix the anti-skate disc. Once that is all configured, it'll sound like a dream.
>>129795466>you feel like you might as well take a chance and buy somethingYes that's the fun part. If you can't enjoy the hunt, just stay home. You really come across as entitled whiner.>waaaaah give me exactly what I want RIGHT NOW! the universe owes me OK!! I'm not going to listen unless I've already seen it on a 4chan chart!! Reeeeeee
I buy records I really like and don't even open them. I just like collecting the good shit (even though I buy like 3 records a year at most).
>>129795526I found some ECM jazz recently (Anouar Brahem), pretty good and great recording as expected from ECM. Also bought some hip hop by accident (Dream Warriors) but haven't listened to it yet.
>>129795742Do you know much about ECM? I like jazz but don't know a lot about that label. Who should I look out for?I have that Dream Warriors cd to. Not bad if you like 90s hip hop and are sick of De La Soul.
>>129795796>Do you know much about ECM?Not much, I just knew of them by reputation. They do more modern stuff, doesn't sound like the classical /mu/core jazz.
>>129795822That's ok with me. I am not a jazz purist.
>>129795796>Dream Warriors cdI just marathoned it (Dream Warriors - And Now the Legacy Begins). It has to be the nerdiest hip hop I've heard that's not actually nerdcore. Sound is oldschool even by 1991 standards but as an 80s music enjoyer that's a good thing. Not disappointed even though I only bought it because I thought it was R&B. I like it better than De La Soul.
>>1297949261/100 might be good and sometimes there is nothing. It's not like you will find everything you want all at once. Also, pawn shops can be better. I probably got 2/3 of my collection from a single pawn shop, get finding stones and flyd cds in good shape.
>>129795466There is TONs of top tier classical recordings on cd all over the place idk where they all came from, normies weren't grabbing these in checkout lines like celine dion and enya. I have like 100 good classical cds.
>>129796701I've found Telarc, Hyperion, shitloads of Deutsche Grammophon/Decca/Philips, even some UHJ encoded Nimbus Records ambisonic recordings (not that I have an ambisonic setup but I can at least decode them in software). Lots of Naxos too which sometimes has great stuff despite being a budget label.
>>129796782Who was buying all of this? Obviously they are all gone now. There were a lot more classical music enthusiasts than I realislzed. Maybe music clubs?
>>129792738the inconvenience is the upside and im not joking
>>129796946>Maybe music clubs?Possibly. You sometimes find inscrutable sticky labels with letters/numbers that could have been part of a cataloging system. But I think most are from private collections because you often see patterns in the kinds of music you find together where it looks like one person donated all of them.>>129796969CDs already have enough inconvenience without all the other downsides.
>>129794926I found a UK import Coil EP at a thrift store a few years back, mixed in with all the shit. If you go to the thrift store every week, you'll chance upon some weird things in the course of a year. I just go in there to kill time, majority of visits I buy nothing
>>129799461This is the way to do it. I noticed some busier goodwills will rotate shit too or they just have astock in the back.

>>129792738>t. Couldn’t afford an lp he really wantedI only buy CD’s if that’s the original format it was released in, the rest is LP’s. So far the most expensive record I’ve bought was King Crimson’s Red for 70$

>>129801828>the non-playing side looks great but turn it over and it looks like someone used sandpaper on the playing sideThe data is stored on the non-playing side. Scratches on the playing side make no difference 99% of the time and the 1% you can polish out.

When I was in high school 20 years ago, I found so many empty LP jackets for great records I stapled them to my bedroom wall. It's absurd to claim thrift stores never have anything though, maybe you live in a cultural desert. According to discogs, I bought something like 20k in LPs and CDs in the last couple decades. Found a bunch of nice books too, first editions, signed books etc. P.S. You're a pleb for not appreciating classical music

>>129805184Metal is fucking gay, grow up and diversify your taste in music beyond one genre. You're also wrong about CD scratches. The data layer is immediately below the label and you can buff scratches out of the plastic protective layer with toothpaste or a magic eraser
>>129805496>The data layer is immediately below the label and you can buff scratches out of the plastic protective layer with toothpaste or a magic eraserwhy do all that when i can just buy a non-scratched cd??? thats my point... everything at a thrift is junk. not only is the disc ruined but the artwork is usually ruined too ie water damaged, destroyed front booklet, jewel case hinge broken off inner teeth missingi have lots of different interests in music but none of it is in thrift stores. im still waiting for people to tell me the great finds theyve discovered in thrifts. please tell me some of yours
>>129806119Just yesterday i found My Life by Iris Dement, 2 Deftones CDs, 2 Built To Spill albums and one of the early REM albums I needed to help fill out my collection. Sometimes the sun shines on you and you find something you wanted or is interesting
>>129805184>never found any metal cdsI found the remastered version of Arch Enemy - Black Earth, which is one of the rare few remasters that improves the dynamic range. But no one said that's what they do or the only way they buy music. I special order stuff I want from record stores and go thrifting as a hobby to supplement what I collect and try new things with little investment.Going digging is the fun of sorting through the crap to dig out the gems. The stuff you would personally want could be a bit more expensive though, especially if new or a rare record. Overall my average price for my entire LP collection of eighty-one is $35 which is hardly that bad considering I own the damn things and also there are nigs getting subscription scammed by apple music/spotify/jewtube music on the regular. >muh storagePic related, cheap walmart furniture works just fine. Don't fall for the made-for-hipster ikea refurbished shit and that is another non-issue. Also, if you're really ghetto (you are) just get cardboard boxes for $1.99, it doesn't fucking matter and vinyl records don't weigh THAT much.>cleaningNow this, is a point of contention that as someone with a hefty collection I can agree, it is tedious. However, I find it rewarding to have finally figured out a cleaning ritual involving the right solution and also distilled water to clean records. I must say, that is a huge positive to having CDs, they are good to go from a factory, whereas I have gotten "factory sealed" records that were dustier than a nun's pussy. Worst part about this is that the quality of how some records are pressed varies significantly. I have definitely received my fair share of dogshit pressings, riddled with pops, clicks, and even skips BRAND NEW! But why not have both? Certain albums make more sense to have as CD or as vinyl records. Some were pressed flawlessly as vinyl records and the other way around. In my experience, cassette is the biggest meme since it sounds like shit

>>129814673It was a starter one to see how I felt about vinyl. Got it in late '24 and have only used it on occasion. Could very well track down an old one later.
>>129805444>>129810122>>129810642Thanks guys. Found this the other day as well
>>129808060That's pretty retarded honestly, you're a sheep to a business model that's objectively worse in terms of actual music listening
>>129820280Ita not worse though its better
>>129792738>disc is more than likely to degrade over timeThat's the one bit you got wrong. Everything degrades but vinyl lasts longer than CDs.
>>129822040Why do you believe this? Discs last forever. I don't actually know how long vinyl lasts if untouched and stored correctly, but every time you play it (thats what they are made for btw) it degrades.
>>129817729Went thrifting yesterday and found a copy of Pet Sounds. Never really listened to much of the Beach Boys outside of the hits, which I don't really care for, but Sloop John B makes me feel like crying. Never been into Yes either. I should try again.
>>129795084I like picking up random foreign CDs if I can, I’ve picked up some really good Eastern European stuff that turned out to be peak. I think my favorite is by Leonid Utyosov. Also found the “Woman is the Nigger of the World” single by John Lennon for like a dollar. I also found all things will pass the box set for like 4 bucks one time a few years back in an antique store. I’ve found a lot of other shit as well you just have to be consistent and you’ll find good stuff
>>129820280Whose business model is based on selling used records, Mr. Boomer's garage sale?
>>129823596Haven't you ever heard of used record stores?
>>129823941I stopped going around 2015 when they discovered discogs and began setting their prices to 125% of discogs median value
>>129816124>ah i see. yeah the only cd from that list that ive seen at goodwill is the pj harvey one. nothing but old easy listening stuff, celine dion, and christmas music at my local thriftAdd classical and d-list country to the list here. You have to live in a proper city to find decent CDs at Goodwill or other thrift stores.
>>129824237>Add classical and d-list country to the listits amazing this garbage sold in such large quantities in the first place. now its old and trashed and goodwill thinks its still going to sell. goodwill had a decent size cd section then about 3 years ago dumped all of them and only put them on 2 little shelves about 25 inches long near the books. suddenly there was hardly any more than 100 cds even there if that and thats the way theyve kept it since, dont even have vinyl anymore
>>129824237>considers himself a music aficionado>has irrational fear of classical musicPleb
>>129825401not him but i also dont like classical music. more people dont like it than do thats why it hasnt topped any chart in 200 hundred years. lol
>>129822040>*puts your vinyl in the sun*heh nothing personel kid
>>129792758Unironically the best course of action. You can just get your cool physical media for music you really enjoy and look at the cool cover all you want and then you just go on YouTube and listen to it at the best possible quality free of extra charge.
>>129828846Go ahead and put your favourite CD out in the sun too then.
>>129792738holy based
>>129827906Classical was by far the most popular kind of music until the mid 50s, which is exactly why thrift stores are full of classical records
>>129823941dont exist anymore. there are none in my area at all>>129829501classical cds too. its just what older people like. ive never met anybody that was into classical
Why so many discogs sellers use insane shipping prices? Who is going to order a CD or two with $70 shipping?
>>129831347I think that it could be kind of like ebay where they have set rates to "make things easier."Or it could be a selling tactic - price something low and hope that retards don't check the shipping costs so you make money that way.\And in general shipping has gone up a lot.
