I played Mother 2/Earthbound -> Mother 3 -> Mother/Earthbound Beginnings with no issues or confusion. It enhances the experience to play them in order, but it's far from required; the three games are tied together through their main antagonist and not much else. If there were any argument in favor of strictly playing them chronologically, it's that the tone shift between each game is a lot more enjoyable when you go in order, particularly by the time you get to Mother 3. You'll find yourself surprised by the tone of 3 after playing both Mother and Earthbound, which are more similar to one another than Mother 3 is to either of them.
