how did they make this so incredibly beautiful, it sounds like music made by angelshttps://youtu.be/tZfzbr2OU-w
>>129801059Because Mark Hollis is one of the most talented and soulful artists in modern times. You should check out his later solo album if you haven't already.
>>129801066yeah i def will, what order should i listen in?
he was a rock dude with diverse taste, he loved classical dudes like erik satie and bartok, he loved the tranquil serene jazz albums by miles davis and coltrane, he wanted to capture those kinds of moodier tones and vibes with rock instrumentation and orchestration. albums like in a silent way and sketches of spain were things he obsessed over and was a huge influence in how spirit of eden & laughing stalk were recorded and performed, as well as the brilliant self-titled album he later put out which to me is his magnum opus. they helped him pay attention to how to use sparseness and space in ways that were comparatively very rare in rock/pop.
>>129801193First listen to Colour of Spring and Spirit of Eden, then listen to the self-titled album and if you want, listen to their first two albums too.
imagine listening to this fake deep slop instead of bon jovi or godsmack lmao
>>129801469i also have listened to Spirit Of Eden, but i gotta say i appreciate how much more lively Laughing Stock feels
>>129801478bon jovi is fucking awful
>>129801482I agree, there's no other album that sounds as alive as Laughing Stock, maybe Automatic Writing by Robert Ashley, but in a different way.
Check out Waiting Game by Junior Boys as well. In the same vein as the final 2 talk talk records but with a much more electronic focus.
>>129801499Hex by Bark Psychosis.
>>129802608I really like it but it's not on the same level as LS or AW in my opinion. The highlights are as amazing, but the whole thing can be a bit inconsistent at points.
>>129801489still made songs that mattered and was a better singer frontman
>>129802627I agree. This one has always felt way more depressing to me also. That said the circumstances that lead to those final two talk talk records, the recording process, the budgets, the amount of time they had to record...there's a reason why almost nothing else is at that level.
>>129803106Mark Hollis and Robert Ashley were tormented and under tragic circumstances during the process of those records, just as other great songwriters such as Tim Buckley or Nick Drake.Bark Psychosis were one of the best rock bands of the 90s, specially live, but they were making their debut, and the juvenile tone is all over the record, which isn't a bad thing, just what separates it from stuff like Laughing Stock, Lorca, Automatic Writing or Pink Moon.
