There are cool parts in the songs but they happen for like 10 seconds before the band just switches to another idea. The songs end up blurring together because every song has too many sections that don't really flow together or stand out in memorable ways.
just say you cant play guitar, it's fine
>>129801118I can play better than you.
>>129801125With my balls! Lolzords!
>>129801083Because they want to avoid repetition (good) but (a lot of them) can't into classical forms.
>>129801083Because that's what's expected in the genre. Metal fans want a bunch of random disconnected riffs, so that's what the bands give them.
>>129801083If picrel made you think that it makes sense. Death only started to find a good balance in this by their second to last album and then got a little worse at it again on their last.
>>129802700It's not just Death. Pretty much every death metal song is just riff salad.
>>129801083Death was uniquely schizophrenic when it came to this. Their work isn't very representative of the genre as a whole. But it's also why I like them so much.
>>129804049See >>129804006
>>129804006There's a spectrum to it. Techdeath is much more riff salad than other genres. It's a direct part of the appeal
>>129804050If you don't like Chuck's riffs, then I don't know what to tell you. There's a billion metal albums out there. I'm sure you can find one where you do like the riffs. Some alums might also grow on you as you get exposed to the genre more. I used to think Death's Human was overrated and I didn't get it at all. Then one day I came back to it and I was floored by how much I enjoyed it. As it stands, it's my favorite Death album.
>>129804095It's not about the riffs, it's about how they are organized in the song. Pay attention.
>>129804103Same shit. There's a billion albums out there. Some are more adventurous with their song structures, some are more conventional. Go listen to a bunch and I'm pretty sure you'll find some where you don't find it to be a problem.
>>129804131No, not the same shit. Different shit. Use your brain for 2 seconds.
>>129804148Same shit in the sense that the genre is vast and varied, so my prescription is the exact same: just go listen to more albums. Because saying you just flat out don't like how *generally* metal songs are structured is retarded precisely because of how much variance there is. I'd be more amenable to criticisms that have more to do with metal's genre-defining elements, because those would indeed be ubiquitous. The structuring of songs is just not it.
>>129801083brainletcheck out this song structurehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UxGjWAfEf7Y
>>129801083>why aren't metal songs arranged in a way that is familiar and comfortable to me?stick to the beatles faggot
>>129801161I think you mean>avoid repetition (bad)
>>129804272lol
>>129804233So why make a thread to discuss anything ever?
>>129801083listen to power/heavy/trad instead. they have more traditional structures and aren't just an unending wall of boring riffs like 95% of black/death bands
>>129804413that's gay (homsexual) music
>>129804413>shitty boomer riff you've heard 10000 times starts>verse chorus verse solo>song endswow so exciting i love trad metal
>>129804443you forgot to mention the annoying singing
>>129804430>>129804443>extremecels filtered by superior songwritingmany such cases
>>129804443Truthnuke
>>129804443This but unironically>>129804488>complains about annoying singing while listening to shrieks and growls kek
>>129801083Maybe melodeath bands with more conventional structures are more for you
Could actually be pretty cool if death had good riffs
>>129804818There's nothing wrong with trad metal, but it's a dead genre. There's nowhere you can go with it beyond what Maiden and Priest did. Even they moved away from conventional song structures eventually, because they're FUCKING BORING. The ultimate evolution of metal is just writing classical music for the electric guitar and drums.
>>129804915>The ultimate evolution of metal is just writing classical music for the electric guitar and drums. Why do retards say this for metal as if metal was already closer to "classical music" (extremely generic term) than other pop and rock genres?
>>129804929It's not, but it should be.
>>129804413It doesn't sound like you like music anon
>>129804947>if you don't like endless tremolos blast beats and shrieking you don't like music
>>129804987You forgot the melody part
>>129801083Because FUCK (YOU), thats why ;^)
>>129801083if you want the same riff over and over then stoner/doom is right there
>>129801083just listen to the part you like and switch to another song
>>129801083If you want metal song that uses many short sections that perfectly fit, and every part of the song seems like natural continuation of the previous one, try Metallica - Leper Messiah. Every aspiring metal and non-metal songwriter should learn it and pay particular attention how it uses transitions to make the flow of the song seamless. Like, first time one particular transition is used in 5/4, but the second time it shortens to 4/4 etc.Oh, and you are 100% correct about Death songs being disjointed, that was my main criticism of their music for years. Still good 8/10 band, but could be better if they tried using transitions. Like, if Chuck transitioned to women.
check out Moonsorrow
Really? Your criticism is that metal isn't like top40 pop and radio rock who are explicitly built entirely around repetition of catchy simplistic trash?
>>129806609No, he's right. Metal musicians often just go riff new riff new riff new riff new riffIt'd be better if there was actual motivic development.
>"riff mosaic"
>>129804775I can't think of any power/trad metal songs written in traditional Classical forms, yet as early as the 80s there were already standard death metal tracks written in sonata form

>>129801083Structure is a crutch.
>>129807860calling things a crutch is a crutch
There's nothing wrong with repetition, see wurdulak or impiety
>>129801083It's because metal bands have this really stupid workflow where everyone gets a shot at putting a riff into a song. Metalheads are really gay about this for some reason.
>>129801083it's literally just a/b/c/d/a/b/c/d - very formulaic but not necessarily bad
>nonstop 40 minute album is cooked up in a week by a few teenagers and the lyrics are written after the facthttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D61DbL889YE
>>129808728and the reason it's not necessarily bad is because 3 of the 4 parts are very good riffs or at least reasonably good riffs. part d is usually a solo which is hit or miss and dated a bit but if the riffs are good then i give it some grace :3
>>129804380OP is literally always a faggot.
>>129808892Explain how a solo can be dated.
>>129801083I like voivod
There are a lot of metal bands and different ones have different songwriting capabilities, and beyond that, disjointed song structure is sometimes desired in this genre unlike most others. Some bands aren't disjointed at all and have extremely good songwriting. Some have good songwriting despite/due to the disjointed structures.
>>129801083But they do flow together, it’s just harder to follow since most metal that does this tends to be chromatic in nature, with some completely atonal. Even modern classical music that has lots of chromaticism, atonality, 12-tone, serialism, etc can feel similarly disconnected to someone new to listening to it.
>>129809873>But they do flow togetherno they don't
>>129801083If you want to listen to good metal stuff just ignore any band or an album that haven't went multi-platinum. So most of the extreme metal stuff like thrash, doom , black etc..There's a reason so many metal bands never went even single platinum-people don't want to buy garbage.Multi-platinum rock and metal albums may sometimes be normie shit but most of the time it's good and the songs are well structured and thought out.
>>129809873I've never heard an atonal metal song in my life
>>129812968Jesus this is awful advice DO NOT listen to this
>>129801083the only good metal band is black sabbath
>>129802700Not even true, by TSOP chuck had really refined his musicianship and use of phrasing. It’s his magnum opus, it only seems disjointed to people with a poor grasp of music / poor attention span
>>129801083What does good song structure look like to you, OP? Can you imagine it in a metal context?
>>129812968>popular == good; unpopular == badTaylor Swift might be more your speed
>>129801083Listen to groove, sludge, and stoner doom metal if your tired of the constant switching of the flow and riffs there’s tons of examples
>>129813281i was talking only about rock and metal bands that went multi-platinum and there's many of them, also all of the big 4 of grunge that went platinum too,i don't listen to pop and definitely not taylor swift cause im not a gay guy or a girl..
>>129813459that's just going to the other extreme where the song is nothing but a single idea repeating for 5 minutes.
